So I work at a bar called Rhino Bar in Georgetown, in Washington DC. Met one of the Georgetown University volleyball players there a week or so ago, and have since been staying over a few times a night. I was supposed to stay over last Sunday night, but didn't for whatever reason, though now I regret not going over. I got a text message from her at 6am, telling me how she woke up at 4:30am to four men in ski masks in her bedroom, going through her place. She screamed and they all ran off, taking with them her TV, phone, laptop, and wallet. She called the cops, filed the report, etc. but no progress yet. Same thing has happened to several other college housing areas lately, sounds like the same crew. They supposedly arm themselves with a bat, a golf club, and a knife. Needless to say (although a repeat visit is highly unlikely) I stayed over the following two nights, with my 13+1 Para Ordnance .45 LDA and Surefire light, but she's still a bit spooky. Luckily she wasn't hurt, but she very well could have been, four grown men and her by herself. Wish I would have been there with my 14 buddies that night, things would've gotten a bit interesting...

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Thank the good lord.

Glad she's OK and only some possessions were lost. Could have been far, far worse as you well know.

She is fortunate to be alive and unharmed. Thanks for looking out for her. So often they think the world trends to a fun place with occasional nastiness. Maybe that's our fault as parents, not wanting to raise frightful girls. The flip side is their belief that we worry too much.

I have two girls of my own, one in college. And I worry...

If she were a cat I'd say she has 8 lives left.

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Oh man, good lookin' out like that. She's lucky to have a friend like you. She's damn lucky--some crews don't leave witnesses.

Secure the place to the Nth degree...

Whew, glad she is okay...

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Kellogg we need pics of said volley ball player to authenticate this story.

Glad she is okay.

They need 12 to convict. Tell me, if anyone of us were on the Jury, would there be a conviction? Only after Hell froze over if I was on the Jury.

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Glad your girl is okay. What's the rules about guns in DC now? You can have them in the home for self-defense? Does she need a permit or anything, and is she comfortable learning how to shoot?

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Kind of a catch-22, as you can own a pistol now in your home, but there aren't any gun shops/FFL holders in DC. All sorts next door in Virginia, but you have to have a Virginia license to buy one. To even transport one out of your house it has to be disassembled, locked up, and ammo in a separate container. If you get pulled over and have even a single bullet, without a weapon, you can get arrested and fined/charged PER bullet. Not much progress, but some is better than none. Still can't have a CCW here, unless you're active/retired police officer.

Only pic I have so far...

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Despite concerns that the decision [DC's repeal of the handgun ban] would increase violence in the District, D.C. police announced that in 2009 the District saw its lowest number of homicides since 1966, a 23% drop compared to 2008.

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

I am glad the young lady is ok, and to be honest, I'm glad it ended that way rather than her or you shooting them.

Not that I have any sympathy for the scum balls concerns but rather because I suspect it would have ended up in a lagal nightmare, and a *very* expensive one, had it gone down that route..

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

I just dont understand this type of logic that exists in some states in the USA.

Any person entering into a home wearing Ski masks is not there for tea and biscuits. There should be the automatic right to take the life of that person no matter what. You hear constantly about the gung ho attitude of killing an intruder. Its not as easy as the movies make out. However in such circumstances I believe most right thinking people would not bat an eyelid.

I read this morning that the main assosication of the Police Sgts and Inspectors are calling for a clarification on the law in this respect and advocating the use of lethal force to be used against home invaders.

Pete, to be honest mate I would take the legal nightmare over being basttered and killed any day. or anything happening to my wife and family.

Couple of years ago I had some trouble with some of the local shithead Teenagers where I live. They threatened to rape my wife when I was at work. I confronted one of them, broke his jaw with the butt of my shotgun and told him that should even an act of god damage my home or injure myself or any family member I was going to kill him, regardless if it was the lord almighty was responsible.... never heard from them again...

I understand where you're comming from and agree completely, I was simply commenting that I am glad it did not go that way.

Its a very sad state of affairs that in some parts of the US and certainly most of the UK, a shooter would find himself in court having to justify his actions if he defended his family in that way.

Given how the legal system works, even if you are "cleared" or if the case doesn't get to court, the "defendent" still stands to loose a lot of cash, have their lives turned upside down, and suffer considerable stress (on top of what was already a highly stressful event)doing what me, you and most people (not just shooters) would consider to be morally justified.

I think its Texas that has the "castle doctorine" which allows homeowners to take leathal force almost no questions asked in these situations, and thats how it should be.

In the UK, we are allowd to use "resonable force" and in 98% of the cases where this arises, the Police will always charge the homeowner so that the Judge/Jury can determine if the force used was "reasonable".

From that point, it becomes a bit of a crap shoot depending on the ability of the prosecutions lawyer to paint the homeowner as a would-be nutcase, and the burgler as a miss guided soul who was trying to raise money to pay for his sick daughters medical treatment!

Point is, you should'nt have to be tried by 12 in this sort of situation!

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Thank God everything turned out OK!!!

This is the exact reason I made sure my gf knows how to shoot, and while she only owns a .22 semi-auto pistol, it's loaded and stashed near her bed...

Same reason I had my .357 on last night when I took her out for a late night birthday dinner/fire/drink bottle of wine surprise in a remote park where nobody ever goes...

Same reason my older sister had an 18" 5 shot pump 20 guage loaded with 000 all through college when she lived alone...

Better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it! Can't believe the retardedness of DC gunlaws. Should be deemed unconstitutional as you're not only taking away the right to keep and bear arms, but the right to be able to defend your life and your family.

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

Now there are a lot of woulda-coulda-shoulda's going on - sounds like the OP did what was best - glad to hear that.
I'd consider getting her a small firearm, 38 revolver or some such that can be used reliably in any situation.

However, in a place such as that, if you shoot someone with a knife, they may say it was excessive use of force.

There is always the martial arts - I do keep a wooden bokken in my house and would use it first against a non gun toting intruder - history has shown that some samurai even killed people in battle with them.

What about a shotgun, a good shotgun racking might have gotten their attention.

Glad she is safe!

So were her doors unlocked? She didn't wake up until after they were already in her house and in posession of her stuff or did she just sit there screaming while they looked around for stuff and then after they found all those items they then ran away?

Also,

cool story bro.

Re: Waking up to Ski Masks...

It's Georgetown University, none of the kids lock their doors. No clue why not, especially considering the fact that this same group of assholes has his three or four other GU students' houses, as well as half a dozen or so houses at Howard University and George Washington University. I couldn't believe it when I went to her house just two nights ago, and she still didn't have even a set of blinds over her back door (double doors with large windows, letting anyone see right in), and her doorknob on the exterior door is a non-locking interior doorknob. The only further precaution she's taken is to lock the deadbolts at night. I even explained how for less than $100 she could get some decent door jams and window alarms from the local hardware store, to no avail. She's not a girlfriend, otherwise I'd be much more adamant about her fixing these issues.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: The Mechanic</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Sounds like a good reason to teach her how to shoot. </div></div>

every time a girl asks me "why do you like guns so much" it starts a long conversation that inevitably ends with me asking why she doesn't own a gun for personal defense or at least know how to use one.
I've tried talking my mother into carrying.
I've suggested that both my sisters learn to shoot and arm themselves.
I've tried talking female friends and past girlfriends into getting into shooting sports, some have and most havent.

Point being, There is NO REASON that a female shouldn't at least be comfortable enough to explore the option of hand guns for personal safety.
I feel bad for women that dont have the confidence to learn shooting sports on their own, and I feel even worse that they don't have competent men in their lives willing to teach them.
