I've heard both argument: "We Need Jobs" and "It will kill our local economy and locally owned shops".
After getting out of the military I had moved with my wife, closer to her parents in Western Maryland. There they had a regular old style Walmart, a booming mall, and plenty of local shops to shop in and get what you needed. Then something changed. WalMart bought the mall, and built a Super WalMart, attaching it to the local mall. Shortly after the mall started to change. One by one the store started closing. It is now 10 years later, and there is nothing in this mall. Ya, you have some stores like PC Penny, Sears, EB Games, Kay Jewellers, and the food court. Other than that, if a new store is to open it only stays until the lease is up and then they also close. Even the store outside of the malls have been hit every hard. The small city that homes this Super WalMart has been full of empty store front for over eight years. I wish I could say it was due to the economy that we are currently in, but this was happening, like watching domminos fall, since the opening of the Super WalMart.
So, for however many job this may create, how many job will be lost over a period of time?
