Tragedy indeed…. But no one who saw the short movie “Sweet Sundays Gone” ever forgets it. Even the updated version is pretty shocking to a teen!

Wonder if it got dropped for “sensitivity”. Or because Hunter Safety moved online during Covid? Not sure. Our town moved it from the PD where we volunteer taught it to the “Recreation Department” and they didn’t want any of us “old timer” instructors. It’s all run by “book course” now with no actual hunters teaching it. All of us who used to teach it had been in the woods since we’re were little kids. Now… sociology majors.

I had been teaching it for 41 years when they dropped us. Iwas the youngest certified instructor in the state when I got certified at 18. Taught in 7 states over the years. Always a shortage of instructors. Thought about picking it up in another town. But never bothered.

Anyway…. I hate reading these stories.

Stay safe in the woods this fall! Identify your target as if a life depended on it. It does.

And teach your kids or grandkids well! I know folks here will!!!

I moved to Michigan for a few years for my work. Every year there were multiple cases very similar to this that hit the news. These included hunting buddies shooting at sound and killing their friend, guys who shot themselves while unloading or cleaning 🙄, and at least a couple instances of shooting friend or family while putting the rifle back in the vehicle.

All easily avoidable with just the simplest adherence to firearm rules. To this day, when giving my brief pre-match safety spiel to a largely seasoned and familiar group, I still remind them that there are no accidents when it comes to firearms. There is only negligence or mechanical failure. And harmful mechanical failures can largely be avoided.
