What barrel contour are you guy's using

Re: What barrel contour are you guy's using

#18 Krieger Light varmint.

Wanting to build something lighter maybee with a rock creek Remington Varmint or Sendero contour.

Re: What barrel contour are you guy's using

Does fluting remove enough weight to notice a difference? I'm going with the hvy varmint contour, and considering fluting to reduce a little bit of the weight.......

Why? Too much weight? I am at THIS impass right now. I am ordering my barrel tomorrow, and I did not think 1 pound was THAT much of a difference.

I carried it around my Dad's farm all day on saturday hunting coyotes and it got real heavy. it is only 20 inches but it still weighs more than my 260 that is a Rem Var contour and 26 inches. I may even go with a light palma for my next build.

Re: What barrel contour are you guy's using

Medium Palma and Remington Varmint are very similar. I went with medium Palma. Fluting would only save .5 lbs, approximately.

Weight is one thing, muzzle heavy is more of a problem for offhand and positional.

This last barrel from Boots Obermeyer starts, chamber end at 1.250 for 3 inches then it tapers 0.007 per inch to the end. In my case with my GAP .308 the barrel length is 22 inches measured from the lug. Barrel has a 1:11 twist, It is Boots AMU Plus, non-fluted muzzle end measures right at 1.122 inches.

Gunny,

That's not a barrel, that's a truck axle masquerading as a barrel.......Perhaps it is a crew served weapon....Nice stick though

Re: What barrel contour are you guy's using

I'm nearly a beginner at this stuff...but here's my take on it as I'm ready to re-barrel two of our Savages.

If it's a target or benchrest gun, the shortest length that will provide the required velocity, and the heaviest contour available.

If I were a hunter (and I'm not, yet- anyway), I would go the complete opposite direction. Lightest weight possible for carry. Hunting is all about that first cold-bore shot counting, and maybe one or two follow-ups. Barrel heating up is a non-issue.

I just purchased a Savage 10 FM Sierra lightweight "mountain rifle" as they're known for a target build. 6.25 lbs with a lightwieght stock and pillar bedded. I'm going to remove the action for a varmint barrel and benchrest stock for my target shooting. If I get into hunting, I'll put the action back into the lightweight stock, re-install the 7-.08 lightweight barrel, and go hunting...
