What else do I need for my 700 build?

Hi friends, just looking for a little guidance here on any common-sense upgrades I'm probably missing before I head over to the smith's.

My project is just your standard 700 S/A build (starting with an SPS Tactical), and here's what I've pulled together so far (almost exclusively from this forum)...

--McM A5
--SS 10x42 (side focus)
--Burris med rings
--TacOps o/s bolt knob
--Harris 6-9"

Next get:
--Timney or Jewell
--Vortex flash hider (maybe)

So what am I missing here? (20" heavy barrel and action are stock SPS Tac.) Anything else I should square away up front that would yield a discernable improvement to accuracy or reliability?

My intended application is some long-range fun and hunting; no F class is in view at this point.

Thanks a ton for any input you may be willing to offer.

Sorry, a base came with the used SPS but I don't know what brand it is. Looks ~20o.

And the Burrises came with the scope-- which rings are the favorite around the hide?

Lastly, Timney or Jewell? I've never shot either.

Thanks again, fellas.

its going to be a great rifle I just put together a similar build off of a SPS Tactical I went with a Rifle Basix Trigger because I'm cheep but it has been a great trigger. From what I have read you cant go wrong with either of the triggers you have listed above.

Yep, those are XTRs, no need to swap'em out for anything else.

Re: What else do I need for my 700 build?

So is the Jewell as much better than the Timney as the price differential would imply, or is it more of just a preference thing?

And do I also need to square away the firing pin assembly or J hook something or other? I'm fuzzy on that piece but keep seeing it come up re the 700..

Re: What else do I need for my 700 build?

Timney owners say Jewell triggers aren't worth the extra cost and can jam up with dirt, Jewell owners say that Jewell triggers are the best. I guess if you have the disposable income, why not go ahead and get the Jewell? I doubt the Jewell will shrink your groups more than if you had a Timney though, so really, it's up to you on whether or not you have to have the "best".

I would leave the firing pin assembly alone unless you start having fail to fires.

Re: What else do I need for my 700 build?

I fall in the "Timney owners" camp on the trigger discussion and let me tell you something. I'm sure that Jewell makes a wonderful product and I am willing to acknowledge the slight possibility that perhaps they produce a marginally more precise and constant trigger than Timney. However, I have been 100% satisfied with the Timney trigger that I placed in my Remington. Also, I do not believe that I would be able to detect any improvement if I spent the extra $100 or so to replace my Timney with a Jewell.

For that reason I would advise you to go ahead and drop in a Timney trigger.

If that bipod has a swivel you might want to put a pod lock on it. But if you're remotely adept at turning a wrench and following directions then it's a DIY project, no need to have your smith do it unless you are a 100% hands off type.

How about bedding-- do I definitely need it skim or glass bed into the McM A5 or is that not necessary with that quality stock?

While it's not necessary, it's highly recommended. My McMillan HTG stock came with molded in pillars and I had it bedded. Amazing to see the surface area that wasn't touching the stock after the bedding was done. I would just do it.

Re: What else do I need for my 700 build?

Definitely true the action and especially the lugs (stock Rem's can be way out of whack). You should do that before you do anything else. Yes, bed the action even w/pillars. Flash hider? For night ops? Should've got the Jewell. You will need a 20 deg. scope base for long range with that SS scope.
