Whats my rifle?

I have had this rifle for a long time and taken a few deer with it. I have always wondered who the manufacturer was. It is a short action controlled round feed chambered in .308. It has a huge,stiff,clumsy barrell style safety in the rear of the bolt. There are no markings on it other than a poorely stamped serial# on the side of the reciever. Any help would calm my inquizitive mind. R.R.

Looks like an Arisaka (japanese) mil-surp that's been rechambered if its in .308??

I thought of that initially but I have an Arisaka and it is totally differant.(no rising sun or grind marks on the reciever either.) Not sure if it is the original barrel.

Arisaka - may be a Type 38 vs a Type 99.

type 38 originally chambered for 6.5 X 50. strong action. would like better pic of barrel? lots of them used for sporters after WW II, sometimes rebarreled, sometimes rebored.

Huh, I guess it is an old jap! Well it always shot well for me and the fit was good with the aftermarket stock but that safety was just a biotch for deer hunting!

smiths used to weld/solder a loop on them to make them easier to use.

i have read that these were competeing with mausers pre-ww2 and were very nice sporting actions......
