Rifle Scopes what's the best ranging reticle

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

First of all are we talking about milliradian or minute of angle based reticles?

I don't think there is going to be a clear answer to your question since there are quite a few "ranging reticles" on the market and each one has its own merits. Honestly the best reticle is the one that you practice with and become truly proficiient at using. I've used Leupold mildot and TMR reticles, Premier Gen II reticles, Nightforce MLR and Mildot reticles, and so forth. Out of all of them I don't think I would say any one of them was better than the other, even if some of them had nice features the others didn't. The reason being that the reticles were what they were, mil-based reticles, and I know how to use them, even if they don't have features like half mil hash marks or fine increments on the ends. It doesn't matter what you get, the only thing that's going to make ranging easier is practice.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

I have had significant success with the Horus Vision line of reticles in both US Optics and Horus Vision scopes.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

The BEST ranging reticle is the one in your laser rangefinder. Anything else is a distant second place. At that point, I like any mil reticle with a 1/2 mil mark and hash marks rather than dots. I'm kind of partial to the TMR reticle in the Leupold spotter, the .2 marks make readings down to .05 mil fairly simple. Skill and practice is more important than the actual reticle design. I still have one of the old Leupold 25x compacts with a standard USMC mil reticle that works just fine, presuming you know how to use it.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

The Nightforce MLR has 0.2 mil gradations at the ends of the reticle, which makes ranging easier.

However, as with most things, the ability to range with the reticle is a function of practice. I'm about as proficient with a Gen II mildot as I am with the MLR.

Yeah, a LRF is better, but we practice ranging with the reticle not because we want to use it, but because we may have to.

One only has to practice the tasks at which one wishes to be good.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

Most people who use a Horus reticle for some time report that they cease to notice the reticle. That includes me. The grid is a very useful reference for correcting shots, and the ability to shoot from short to very long distances without having to dial elevations is very useful.

It was not, though, designed as a ranging reticle. In fact, the H25 reticle has a separate IPHY ranging reticle in the left quadrant.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

For what its worth, I got a new Leupy with a TMR reticle in it, sat down and glassed a cinder block at what I estimated to be 162yd with the TMR. I pulled out the laser rangefinder and it read 163-164yd, so that was pleasing. Easy to work with too.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

I think the two easiest to learn on is the USO MPR and the IOR MP-8 A5 that I did up for the 3-18x42mm riflescope.

After you learn how to range, they all are basically the same.

The H25 would be my pick if money were no object (wish the premier I'm waiting on had one!). Mil grid and holdovers and the IPHY ranging bracket. IPHY is in my opinion the fastest, easiest scale to range with, just divide target size (in inches) by what you read it to be on the reticle/scale and you have how many hundreds of yards to target.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

I have used the USMC Mildot for most of my life. I just ordered the GAP Mil reticle in my SN-3. I mulled over it for awhile, now I just have to use it to see if it's more accurate for me (probably not).

I would like to get a scope with the Horus reticle, just to give it a go. I have never used one and think the theory is sound.

How true. We easily forget that a duplex can be a ranging tool also.
The button on my Leica is my favorite ranging tool, but I definately believe in knowing more than one way to achieve a desired result. Anywhere MR Murphy can show up is a place where redundancy should abide.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

IOR MP-8 Couple that with an iPod with a program called Mil-Dot and you can range very nicely. Or spend a few more dollars ($20 I think) and get the program called Billistic for it. It has the Mil-Dot ranging part in it plus full trajectory, BDC, wind drift, you name it. Sweet program, I use it with the MP-8 of course, but also with this little mono scope IOR makes. It's a little 10x pocket scope with great glass and an MP-8 ret. in it. When I test it against my laser RF I'm usually very close.

If anyone wants info on any of this stuff PM me and I'll hook you up.

Re: what's the best ranging reticle

If you shoot at popup targets at unknown ranges and the target is only visible for a few seconds a Shepherd-type reticle is the best.
