As far as this trademark / copyright issue... the complainant should have filed for those trademarks / copyrights. It's not like we're dealing with something like Google, Nike, Microsoft. Do to those companies being as large they are and as common as they are, they don't have to have an actual trademark/copyright for everything.

Getting back to the original article, it looks like Lady A (the 61-year-old black singer) has been using the name Lady A for decades. Lady Antebellum filed its trademark application on May 18, 2010. Under US law, rights in a trademark arise in the first person to use the mark in commerce, unlike the rest of the world where priority is based on the first to file a trademark application. Given that the original Lady A was using the Lady A trademark in commerce in connection with her music for decades prior to Lady Antebellum's trademark application, she would have priority in the mark.
It gets interesting though, because Lady A (the original) never filed a federal registration, yet Lady Antebellum did. Even if Lady Antebellum's trademark application were granted, Lady A should have the right to continue to use that trademark within the geographic boundary established by her prior use. Lady Antebellum cannot come into the game late and file a trademark and then push Lady A out of the area in which she has historically operated.
Lady A should have challenged the trademark filing when it was originally filed. She did not. I'm handling one of these lawsuits/challenges with the US Patent and Trademark's Trial and Appeal Board right now.
Between the 5th and 6th year of registration, a registered trademark holder must file a Section 8 declaration confirming that they are still using the mark to keep the registration.
Between the 9th and 10th years of registration, the registered trademark owner can file a combined Section 8 (statement of continued use) and a Section 15 (Declaration of Incontestability). Once that is filed and approved, the Section 15 filing limits the ability of others to challenge the registered trademark.
Here is where it gets interesting, the US Patent and Trademark Office sent Lady Antebellum a letter on Feb. 19, 2018 stating that their trademark registered on Feb. 19, 2013, and that the Section 8 was due between the 5th and 6th year of registration, with it being due no later than Feb. 19, 2019. Yet, Lady Antebellum filed a Combine Section 8 and 15 on August 19, 2019. First, it was late, but there is a six-month grace period, and they appear to have filed it on the very last day allowable. Second, it should likely have just been a Section 8 filing. The registration was in its 6th year. But, it looks like they may have filed the Section 15 Declaration of Incontestability as well. That cannot be filed until the 9th year, which would be five years from now. They filed it too early.
This will be a fun legal battle if Lady A has the resources to fight it. She could potentially get the Section 15 Declaration of incontestability invalidated and then challenge the underlying trademark registration. In any event, she should be able to claim and keep a priority right in the geographic areas where she had established her stage name prior to Lady Antebellum. Lady A has put herself in a bad position by not fighting the original trademark registration by Lady Antebellum, but she has not lost this battle yet. I had a similar fight for a client against a famous actor over a trademark used in a jewelry line. We were able to prevail under similar situations, but it was a hard fight and my client's legal budget was greatly outgunned by the actor's legal budget. This will be fun to watch as it works its way through the system.
