Who Likes Jeeps? My Jeep Cherokee Story.

How does a total loss work as far as building a 'new' car off the frame and drivetrain? Like is it possible to reuse most of what we need from it, yet make it something else and still be able to register/insure it, or how does that work?
If you want to use the frame, probably need to make sure it the title is salvageable. They are usually listed that way in the description when for sale at Copart. As long as you rebuild correctly and it can pass a safety inspection, it should be no issue to tag and drive. From my best understanding and seeings in the past (someone correct me if I am wrong) but a salvaged title does little except take away from resale value.

Edit: this is the title listings from copart

K cool.

Safety inspection part I got down because....reasons.

Wasn't sure how it worked because while the frame/VIN?title would be for a Jeep Cheokee, the end product would look totally different.

Not really an issue. It would always be registered as the original vehicle if you did it that way. If you just used the drive train and built a whole custom frame and body, then you would have to file for a special vehicle title. That is a whole new can of worms though.

Where is the best place to keep checking for salvaged/parted out Cherakoee engines/drivetrains?

Basically all I'd want was a frame and a disel engine plus transmission.

You do know they have Uni-Body frames?

With useable subframes, he could build the rest of the support frame he wants. As long as he gets the geometry correct, it will drive like it should. It is The German we are talking about, and what I’ve seen, money isn’t a showstopper.

I like my Jeeps but if you're going to do what he's doing I'd use something with a full frame.
Mitsubishi Montero would be a good start.

Man, I haven’t driven my Tj in 3 days. Now I wanna drive it just because.

I’m going to be honest. My TJ is a HORRIBLE car! Soft top? In 20° temps that leaks air? COLD! It rides like crap! It’s hard to get into! It drives horrible! You don’t actually drive it, you herd it down the road! Washboard roads? SUCKS ASS! It hogs gas for how little it is and it’s slow as shit! And it’s a manual? Always shifting it? And.....

it’s everything I love about it! Never be without a Jeep!

Well said, I agree completely.

If you are still in the “looking for parts“ stage of the build and haven’t purchased any yet you may want to give this one a look:

I agree but I think he is focused on the diesel power plant idea. I would probably look for a Chevy Colorado that has been in a rollover. Scrap the body and keep the frame, suspension, and drivetrain. Build the rest as you see fit.

4bt ftw.

Very cool build. I wish I had the skills to do something like that. I've had a 2013 Rubicon and now have a 2019 Rubicon. I want one with a diesel motor or see how the Hemi motor does.

I e got a similar addiction. Have a 92 Wrangler that doesn’t have much left from 92. Put a 360 mopar in it about 2006 with an nv4500 tranny and atlas t-case. Have a high pinion Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear both with Detroit lockers and 5.13 gears. Running allied beadlocks and 44” swampers. Wheelbase was stretched about a foot and hydraulic assisted steering added. Too many other things to list. I also have a 1981 Scrambler that I did a full frame off restoration on and dropped in an amc 360 with 35” tires. It’s got stock axles but only sees the road. Also have a 1984 CJ7 that stays at my friends hunting shack. It’s stock except for 31” tires and Weber carb. Moved from Alabama to Minnesota and back for work, so the Minnesota plates are gone. Back in God’s country now.

That Scrambler is nice. Grew up riding around the deer woods in one of those, maybe one day I’ll get one

Nice! Are those pics from the Gilbert trails?

I think the 392 wrangler ships in Jan. I put a Cummins 5.9 HPCR in an H1, lot of work.
Dealership has one on order and said he’d call me when it arrives to play with. Also had a widebody 392 charger coming in, interested to see how they look in person

Alright Jeep fans. My wife and I are in a debate on which wheels look better. I know what I want but just want to see what the consensus is.
One set is the Black Rhino Armory and the other is some old style M/T wheels.

A friend bought the Black Rhino's for his Gladiator Mojave with 35's, doesn't really like them now that they're on. I prefer the classic look of the MT style. What are they going on?

i own 6 of them. Drive a 97 grand cherokee everyday to work, 240,000 miles on it and runs like a champ. The newest is my wife's 2010 Grand Cherokee. 4 more in between . Not one of them uses oil or has a drop under them when parked on cement. Best money i've ever spent on vehicles

Here is pics of my eco-diesel build.

the only story i could share is my pop has a 96 jeep Cherokee loaded it was pretty nice the day after he traded it in the area got either 2 ft or dam close to it of snow I had to laugh my ass of at his timing , sadly I also had to pick him up as his car was not going anywhere at least my bronco was still running at that time .

Just a word of caution. No aftermarket stroker builder has been able to do a stroker 4.0 to 4.6/7 six cylinder build that doesn't prematurely destroy the camshaft. The extra spring seat pressure needed to make use of the extra cubic inches with a bigger cam, just surpasses what the original cam bearings can support. Having to rebuild the engine every 12K miles would get pretty tiresome. There has been talk of a roller camshaft solution, but at that kind of cost, You're in V8 engine swap territory.

If you do any cam work, you need to run diesel oil with higher zinc, or go roller.

One of the 4.2's in the garage is going back the CJ-7 in with a Holley roller hydraulic cam setup, rev range is 1800-5200 rpm, instead of the stock one that was done at 3500.
Good pistons, good rods, good cam, and an aftermarket head that flows more than 5cfm.

I'm still trying to decide to run the Holley 390 or go to a terminator.

If I can make 200hp and 350 lb ft I'll be happy. I have 4 trucks to tow with, the Jeep just needs to haul itself. Even at 300 ft lbs I'm guessing a set of dynatrac axles are in my future.

I love my wrangler, but haven’t started to “build.”

Now it's jut a moderately built Tacoma for a daily driver.

Had an 99 XJ Classic. I really loved the Jeep. The unit body pushed me to build another TJ rather than that XJ.

That's one nice Jeep. I had an '04 TJ "Rubi", that I had until the end of '17(160k+mi.). Moderately built, with 4" lift, 33" tires/wheels, and bumpers. Yours appears better equipped.
Took it to Moab twice and always wanted to get to the Rubicon.
Mac
Edit: yeah, it's clean. Just finished all my mods., after a week of it being on jack stands. So, gave it "the full meal" deal.

I ran Holy Cross w/ one of the Jeep engineers who was on the Rubicon team at the beginning. It was not easy and you might wonder why looking back now, but no one believed you could sell a properly equipped Jeep, or at least pay for it. Boy they were sure wrong. I think it helped usher in some other over the top cars like the Hellcat. There was a Jeep lawyer there too and he was in the not yet introduced LJ. I was jealous of that extra 18" plus or minus. It walked up obstacles us shorter wheel based guys struggled on all day.

Moab IS the place to go Jeeping though. I also wanted to run the Rubicon but I was never able to make that happen.

I want to at least take my gladiator to moab and drive a few trails. Told my kiddos we would make a trip out there someday.
edit. Hadn’t updated a pic with what little work has been done to the MC.
