Im pretty close to making up my mind on my first LRP rifle. Im not really one to 'build' from the ground up, I have no problem with accessories but unsure if i want to actually 'build' a gun.

Im looking to fire from 50-500 yards. Im a newer shooter. It will NOT be a hunter, it will be stuck on the bench.

Im really considering the

Savage Model 12 F T/R chambered in .223

Why shouldnt I buy this rifle?

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

It's a single shot meaning one round at a time. No internal magazine if that matters. If it does look at a 12 BVSS for internal loading or 12VLP DBM if you want a magazine.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

If you will NOT hunt or participate in tactical-type matches, the single shot is just fine.

That will be a great rifle with which to learn the art/science of marksmanship.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

Don't really need a 30" barrel on a .223 also. The other two mentioned have 26" barrels. They will also save you some money

Also the 10 Precision Carbine with it's 20" barrel would work.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

If your not set on a single shot Savage, look hard at the Tikka T3 Varmint BL/SYN 223 JRTH312.

One of the "best" out the box factory rifles, with a street price of under $800.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

I was only thinking .223 because of the cost of ammo. I have tossed around .308 Unsure if it comes in any other.

I actually didnt realize it was 1 shot, ill have to think on that some more.

Bob, I didnt give Tikka a chance really only because one of my close friends has a Tikka m595 and was looking for a different brand that none of my buddies had. But I will take a second look for sure.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

Whats so hard is that my budget will not let me screw this decision up. Everytime i come close to pulling the trigger something else pops up that could be a better candidate. This decision is so tough.

Ive gone from Remington 700 sps tac, to 700p, to building a savage from a stevens, to a M12 F t/r etc.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

Imagine if one day you decide to stretch the range to 1000 +/-

.308 FTR is your answer...but it is still a single shot.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

Do you reload? If so, look at .243 or .260 options as well as the .223 and .308 offerings. I've never had luck with a factory rifle exactly the way I want it, so think about that when purchasing a platform.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

Right now I do not reload but would like to get into that.

With that being said the Mod 12 F T/R appears to only come in .223 with a 7 twist or .308 in a 12 twist.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

You want a fast twist if you are going to 800yds with a .223 b/c you'll want to use heavy bullets (69gr-80gr). The 1/12 is better for the lighter bullets which don't buck wind as well.

Oh yeah.. get into reloading, the cost savings is tremendous if you shoot even somewhat frequently. Especially when working on long range shooting.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

That is true. Bottomgun was hitting at 1035 yards with his .223 loaded with 75grn AMAX a couple weeks ago at the BHTC match.

7 twist is good for the heavy bullets for long range.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

if you want to stay with .223, here are my recommendations based on build quality, components, features, etc.:

1) Howa 1500 - come in 1-9 twist, m-16 extractor, and many models carry a factory accuracy guarantee. Buds gun shop has good prices and several in stock.

2) CZ 527 - comes in 1-9 heavy barrel, claw extractor, detachable mags, HS precision stock. Have shot this model of rifle many times, typically a laser beam.

I would NOT recommend the remmington, the button extractor has known issues with .223 and the basic remmy models don't have near the fit & finish of the other two, IMHO.

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

You would be really smart to get the one with the magazine, simply because if you ever want to sell it,it will sell a heck a lot faster and for more money than a single shot.Single shots are very target only specific, and most guys do not want that.......

Re: Why should I NOT purchase this rifle?

I think .223 is a great beginer caliber. You wont develop a flinch and ammo is cheap enough that you would get more trigger time. WOuld probably sell easy too when/if you decide to sell.
