Don’t see a lot of Winchester 70 projects so I thought I’d upload some photos of mine.
Pre 64 action from a pawn shop beater featherweight.
E.R Shaw heavy sporter barrel.
Richards exhibition stock.
Anyone that’s wondering the pre 64 action is an absolute joy to work with. Smooth and dead nuts reliable.

classy & beautiful! but, my days of taking wooden-stocked guns to get the crap beaten out of them in the woods are long gone.

Absolutely fabulous and if I could find a pre-64 action for a reasonable price I would do a similar project.

Just outstanding.

Is that Claro Walnut in the stock?

And who was the gunsmith/stock smith?

And yes, I am envious

It is Claro, I did the stock, oil finish. Also did the slow rust blue. Only thing I paid to have done was the chamber and it was a smith out of twin falls Idaho.

Outstanding. I love an oil in the wood finish.

When you say you did the stock, from a blank or partially inletted?

And you did true rust bluing? Wow, that’s almost a lost art.

Very impressive.

Richards will inlet and rough stock contour. It’s really nice because you finish it to your barrel contour and you have extra wood you can leave in the grip and comb to get a nice fit. They say it’s 99% inlet but it’s more like 80% lol

Nice!

Needs a glass front gun cabinet made of fine wood.

You need a smoking jacket, soft slippers and a pipe to regal your guests with your fine hunts......and a glass of brandy, definitely a glass of brandy.

Did you use any stain on that walnut or just hit it plain with oil?

Did you use some pumice or rubbing stone to get the pores so well sealed?

What did you use for oil?

Got a walnut rifle coming to me soon that I will be doing the oil rub on.

@pmclaine gets excited talking about rubbing oil on wood. His or someone elses.

I mean, “Dept of Navy” and he took it serious…..

@Mjnelson - that is a mighty fine rebuild of a beauty. Skip brandy. Have bourbon. And a cigar!!
Would love to do one similar.
Guess I should get serious about finding a donor action…..

Both rifles pictured here are really nice. Examples of what rifles were like when I was young and could not afford much of anything but getting to look

Saw a really nice 300 H&H Pre 64 in a shop in Ft Walton Beach. Price wasn’t that bad, would have loved to own it but it just wasn’t the right time or place (plus the lack of need outweighed the love, there just wasn’t room left in the gun safe as it was).

Lot of walnut lovers on here lol
This was my first project. 98 German Mauser my grandfather originally had sporterized. It essentially got the same treatment but finished with true oil and a hot blue.
@pmclaine this one is wet sanded,
@Whiskey_Tango6.5 both are 30-06

Beautiful stock. Keep us posted on what it gets you this year. 1st world problem with having such a gorgeous walnut is the fear of getting it warped/scratch/etc.
Reminds me of my Win M70 Super Grade in 30-06.

I love seeing the Winchester M70 Elk builds. my rifle doesn't have a beautiful piece of wood on it like those, but she works pretty good at dropping bulls. 22" Kreiger barrel chambered in 416 Taylor pushing Barnes 350gr TTSX.
