wheeler barrel nut wrench is on sale for $28 at optics planet. order a $4 pack of targets and they both ship for free. or anything to get it over $30 and its free. brushes, jags, whatever.

Re: wooden vise inserts/jaw protectors?

where do you get a small quantity of that? ill search yahoo, but do you have a supplier? home depot? thats not the same as that white cutting board material is it?

not just a flat pad. but let me see what this wood that i ordered looks like. i have heard that alot of people have used wood and not been able to clamp hard enought to get a good grip without crushing the blocks. if thats the case i have scrap wood here i dont need tp pay for it, lol. can you snap a pic of some of the stuff that you have?

Re: wooden vise inserts/jaw protectors?

I have alot difret sizes its all in sheet form all the way to 2"x4'x4' if you get me deminsions i can either make you some or send you the stock for you to make it its white delrin.

Re: wooden vise inserts/jaw protectors?

i was thinking that would be the second step. you mean the ones that fit into the lugs right? i should have made my own wood blocks, buying them is just lazy. but its done. im shooting for the cheapest step first, so if this works, its $8 and shipping. and its just a one time thing at the moment

300ultra, its 2" thick? how about a 5"x9" chunk of it? let me know what you want for that. its the exact size of a small flat rate postage box that ships for $4.95

Re: wooden vise inserts/jaw protectors?

yes some delrin is cutting block. if you get a delrin set up for clamping it will likely last you a lifetime and your kids will be able to sell them, LOL
I used this stuff on combat robots for armor, transmission housings, bearings and other things. you can beat it with a sledge hammer and barely notice but it is easy to machine and you can cut thick chunks with a skillsaw.
it is neat stuff.

ebay to mcmaster it very findable

Re: wooden vise inserts/jaw protectors?

You don't need a barrel block for your Savage. Just pad the receiver in a vise (don't gorilla squeeze it), slide the wrench over the barrel, engage it on the lock nut and loosen the lock nut.
Sometimes a rap with a rubber mallet is needed to bust the lock nut loose, but doing a Savage barrel is nothing like unscrewing a tube from an action that doesn't use a lock nut (like say an R700 where you need to clamp the barrel and use a wrench on the action).

Re: wooden vise inserts/jaw protectors?

I have found that using wood is very frustrating, however that is all I have to use. I would definitely try to find a different material to put into the wheeler vise. I use the wheeler vise and like it but the wood sucks, and most of the time splits.
