Hornady bullet comparator issue.

20241110_224911.jpg

Ok starting sorting bullets with the hornady bullet comparator. After watching tv I noticed my measurements were changing. I would got back to pile and they were all different. I had the anvil/bushing on lower caliper jaw then close they jaw till the base of the bullet touched the upper jaw. The spin the bullet till it sat flat on the jaw. So i guess its wearing it out being aluminum and be making rookie mistakes. Is this a common issue and keep going till it makes a nice seating spot. Its frustrating because all my piles are off. F@$K IT load them up to the max and send it lol.

US Judge Tosses Illinois' Ban On Semiautomatic Weapons, Governor Pledges Swift Appeal

A federal judge on Friday overturned Illinois’ ban on semiautomatic weapons, leaning on recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that strictly interpret the Second Amendment right to keep and bear firearms.

U.S. District Judge Stephen P. McGlynn issued the lengthy finding in a decree that he said applied universally, not just to the plaintiffs who brought the lawsuit challenging the ban.

The Protect Illinois Communities Act, signed into law in January 2023 by Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, took effect Jan. 1. It bans AR-15 rifles and similar guns, large-capacity magazines and a wide assortment of attachments largely in response to the 2022 Independence Day shooting at a parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park.

McGlynn’s order doesn’t take effect for 30 days.

"Sadly, there are those who seek to usher in a sort of post-Constitution era where the citizens’ individual rights are only as important as they are convenient to a ruling class," McGlynn, who was appointed by President Donald Trump during his first term, wrote in his opinion. "The oft-quoted phrase that ‘no right is absolute’ does not mean that fundamental rights precariously subsist subject to the whims, caprice, or appetite of government officials or judges."

Rifle Scopes Blinded, Randomized scope testing

With all the vastly varying anecdotal reports of IQ between scopes, I think a blinded, randomized controlled trial of scopes would be very interesting. Because there’s some degree of objectivity and methodology in evaluating IQ, I think this could be very revealing.
Bias seems to be one of the greatest influences on individuals as far as I can tell. Whether conscious or subconscious, it can be hard to admit a $600 scope is optically close to a $4k scope.
Just like some people taste soap with cilantro or prefer different flavors than others, I believe vision is the same way. This may be obvious to some folks but it’s definitely not accepted main stream because people continue to argue to the point of insults (myself included 🤣) over IQ of scopes. In contrast, most everyone is in agreement that scope features are subjective, so no need to try and examine that. The test could be standardized to be blinded. It would take some effort but certainly doable. A way to make diopter, magnification and parallax adjustments without fingering the scope. The trial would need to include a professional eye examination and history as well obviously.

Garmin Chrono Software Glitch (Or Am I Missing Something)?

I've been running the Garmin since it first came out, having run in succession Shooting Chrony, Pro Chrono Digital, Magnetospeed V3, and Labradar over the years. The Garmin has been a quantum leap in my opinion. However, I ran into something this week that I just can't make sense of...

I had hit the end of an 8# jug of Retumbo, and opened a new one from a different Lot #. When I went to the range, I ran 10 rounds over the Garmin (300PRC) - the first two rounds were the last from the old lot of Retumbo, the other eight were from the new lot. The first two rounds were right on track with my established AVG MV for the load. However, when I got to the next eight rounds from the new lot, the MV jumped up about 20fps on average. More than I was expecting, but I get it - the new lot is hotter than the old. The ES for ALL 10 was 38, and the SD 12.8. Since the last eight rounds from the new lot were considerably faster than the first two from the old lot, I wanted to find out what the numbers were for just the new lot, so I deleted the first two shots and checked the Session Summary. My ES went way down from 38 to 24. BUT, my SD jumped up from 12.8 to 15.3. The new ES is correct, but I can't see any way the SD could go UP, especially to 15.3 with only a 24 ES. I've never seen such a high SD-to-ES ratio.

I had this happen once before fairly recently, when I deleted a couple rounds from a string that were suspect due to some inconsistencies that had happened during the reloading process. The suspect rounds were marked prior to firing. When I deleted them from the Session, the ES went down and the SD went up. I thought it was a bit strange at the time, but shrugged it off as just the way the velocities distributed themselves. It wasn't anywhere as dramatic of a shift as this last incident was, though. This time I was sure there was a problem in the way the unit re-calculated the SD.

In the past, if I ever deleted any isolated extreme high or low shots (out of curiosity), the SD would come down along with the ES. However, there was a fairly recent software update pushed, and both of the incidents related above have occurred since that update was installed.

Anyone have any insight?

President-Elect Trump Announces Push for National Concealed Carry Reciprocity

Over the weekend President-elect Donald Trump announced a push for national concealed carry reciprocity, a move which would make the concealed permit of any one state valid in the other 49.
On Sunday, Don Trump Jr. posted to Instagram, “Boom! My father just announced concealed carry reciprocity. The Second Amendment will stay and remain protected.”
Texas Gun Rights posted a video of Trump’s reciprocity announcement to X:On September 18, 2015, just months after Trump launched his first presidential campaign, Breitbart News pointed to policy papers wherein he said:

The right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway. That’s why I have a concealed carry permit and why tens of millions of Americans do too. That permit should be valid in all 50 states. A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state. If we can do that for driving – which is a privilege, not a right – then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.

And during his 2020 presidential campaign Trump continued to support national reciprocity. During an interview with the NRA’s First Freedom, Trump was asked, “Mr. President, each state’s driver’s license is honored across this great nation, yet a permit to carry a concealed gun — which, in contrast, is a right specifically protected in the U.S. Bill of Rights — is often not respected by other states. Will you support a national reciprocity act so that law-abiding gun owners can more easily travel with their freedom?”
Trump’s response: “Yes.”
President-elect Trump is again signaling that national reciprocity for concealed carry will be an important goal for his administration.

Action won’t lock up on tenon shoulder

Thanks to some of the great gunsmiths on here who’ve helped me along, I’ve so far completed 8 or 9 barreled actions for myself with great results.

However, I’ve got one in the lathe now that’s got a problem that I’ve been unable to figure out so hopefully, someone here has the answer.

This is a Defiance Deviant long action that measured .967 to the bolt face, so I cut the tenon to .962. The action threads onto the barrel beautifully until it gets close to the shoulder, where it binds up about 10 thousandths short when hand tightening. I’ve reduced the tenon length to .947 just to see if it would lock up, but it still binds up .010 short as shown in the pic.

This action initially locked up perfectly at .962, but I went too deep with the reamer and had to recut the tenon and now this is where I’m at.

Please advise what my next steps should be.

Thanks very much.
