Muzzle brake or suppressor for 300 WM?

Hi, new here!

I was looking at a 20 inch Savage Arms 110 Trail Hunter Lite in 300 WM, and for general use, was wondering if I should put a brake or a can on it.

This gun is meant to be a mobile sniper-ish role when LARPing with friends. As realistic as I can make it for training and fun.

I'm a relatively small dude, about 130 pounds, so I was considering the brake so I could shoot it more than five times without calling it quits.

But I'm being told that a suppressor would also reduce recoil, just not as much, in addition to signature reduction.

I'm leaning towards a suppressor, but am unsure how much recoil it'll hit me with compared to a brake; I shot the same rifle with a brake a while back and it felt lighter than your average 12 gauge. I have not had the chance to shoot a suppressed bolt action in a higher caliber than 6.5 Creedmoor, and don't want to blow cash on a can just to figure out it sucks and I wasted my cash.

If I went with a brake, how many baffles are recommended? If I went suppressor, what suppressor is recommended and why? I was looking at the Surefire RC2 since the 300 SPS has some bulging issue with WM, but I want y'alls thoughts. Thanks!

FUBAR times 6!

So three weeks ago I get a call from PD not to far away from us. They are calling asking for help. I asked, "whats up?" Well we had our 7 dept rifles rebuilt by a gunsmith/shop all with your barrels and out of the 7.... only one shoots! That one just shoots small silly groups! I said really.... 1 out of 7 shoot? The officer says yes. Then he says... can I bring the worst two to you and have you guys look them over? I asked... didn't you call the shop that did the work and talk to them? Answer was yes and they took them back once already and had stuff fixed but they still don't shoot!

I said bring the worst two guns to me and will look them over for ya. He said thanks... the one rifle actually shoots 4moa!

So far we have fixed 4 out of the 6 rifles. They're suppose to bring the next two rifles in next week. Here are some of the things we found that where wrong.

Two rifles the bolt was hitting the back of the barrel. The other two the clearance at best was .004" which still isn't enough.

NV mounts installed backwards (yes doesn't effect accuracy but it's attn. to detail is my bitch there)

One rifle the trigger retaining pins where installed incorrectly. The pin that is suppose to be in the rear was in the front location which if there isn't enough stock clearance it would cause a fit issue between the barreled action and the stock.

One rifle actually had a burr or a piece of metal sandwiched between the recoil lug and the receiver face at the 6 o'clock position. When we took the barrel off to fix the bolt clearance and the muzzle crown... that small piece of metal actually left a small indent in the receiver face. Again goes back to paying attention to detail and what the hell your doing.

We had to fix all of the muzzle crowns on all of the first 4 rifles and rethread the muzzles.

I asked who's scope mounts are these? He said they where custom made! I'll get back to this further down in the reading but the mounts all had a negative MOA taper to them. Also two of the rifles the front screw was hitting the barrel threads. So we had a couple of decent not really expensive EGW 20moa bases and installed them for the first two rifles and ordered two more for the 2nd batch of guns. He said they knew they had issues with the mounts and had to use a shim on one of the rifles so they could get it on paper and have some adjustment to the scope. No more shims needed.

I would say not including range time or ammo cost... just in terms of inspection time and repair time we are averaging 7 hours for each pair of rifles.

When we got the first two rifles reworked (we actually didn't notice at first the scope mounts where messed up) I took them out to my range to test fire them. Figured better test fire them before we give them back to make sure they shoot good! I didn't want to mess with they're scopes and the focus etc... so I mounted my 8-32NXS scope. Scope was on a previous Rem. 700 in 308win so I skipped bore sighting it. That was a mistake! I sent the first round down range and no impact on the target. Said... crap... then I went to a 50 yard target... still no impact! WTF! So I pull the bolt out and to bore sight it had to remove the cheek piece as well. I look down the bore and the gun is pointed like 6" (best guess) below the target at 50 yards. So I start cranking on the elevation knob while looking down the bore and I see the cross hair coming up and then boom... the elevation knob stopped! I max'd out the adjustment and it's still really low on the target. I'm like WTF!!! So I pick the gun up and look at it from the side. That's when I noticed the neg. MOA on the scope mount. So with the scope max'd out at 65moa for travel... I held on the 18moa hash mark of the reticle and that gave me a .75" above center on the target for a zero. That's how I shot the first gun. Needed a total of 83moa just to be in the center of the target at a 100 yards. Then I/we changed all they're mounts out for something that was proper.

I did bring up with the Officer... I said, "hey were not bitching at all but we're not getting paid for any of this and I'll go on a limb and say you guys blew your budget request to get these 7 guns rebuilt but the next time I'm cruising thru your town headed to Marty's Pizza for dinner and you guys pull me over for speeding... tell your boss to give me a get out of jail free card please. He said... got ya covered!

I know the shop that did the work and bent isn't the word for it. As we worked on the first two guns I was actually pacing the floor at one point in time I was so mad.

Enjoy some of the pic's I took.

Later, Frank

First shot barrel oiled or dry ?

At the range prior to my Tikka .223’s first shot, I’ve been removing the oil leftover from barrel cleaning. But I’ve been reading about how leaving this oil in the barrel may help prevent copper buildup from the first few shots, and that some shooters will run a patch with traces of graphite down the barrel prior to shooting in order to also prevent coppering. Has anybody observed increased copper buildup or long tern issues from a dry barrel as oppossed to an oiled one or one with a trace of graphite for the first few shots? Thanks

Question about trimming

I’m loading some 6 Dasher, 3rd reloads, Alpha brass. My question, and this goes for every round really, but should you trim. My brass is well within spec, however they vary individually by 20-30 thousandths in length. Is it worth trimming? Same general question for 6.5 Creedmoor. I’ll have cases ranging between 1.910 and 1.920, usually around 1.915-1.917, is it worth trimming them or only if they are out of spec.

This is for long range PRS and NRL shooting.

Suppressors Abel Theorem S (braked) vs TBAC Magnus RR-K vs Maverick (short)

Ok, I finally got to go shoot these things side by side more thoroughly.

Let me preface that all these cans are bought with my money. I have no connection to either 3 companies. I'm a can whore and I like to collect them all.

First: They are all great cans! You honestly would be hard pressed to go wrong purchasing any of these products. Obviously the Abel is newer and the Maverick is older. I anticipate as many more shooters shoot braked suppressors, the industry will respond with better performing products in the years to come. I am looking forward to it.

I have ran the Maverick for many PRS seasons (4-5?) and consider it a gold standard for braked support performance in the current LR shooting sports. No, it does not make things quiet. But it does make things manageable and pleasant to the shooter. Getting blasted by a brake for 2 days sucks.

I enjoy the Magnus. However, I find it way more effective on larger caliber (aka magnum) rounds than 6 mm, 25, 6.5, etc... It just does not do it for me in terms of reading a target after the shot. Is it impossible? No. Is it shooter error? Maybe. I am pretty comfortable behind a rifle. With that said, I'm sure there are BETTER shooters out there that are evaluating the very same thing.

Last, the Abel. I honestly wasn't going into it thinking I was going to be impressed. In my head, I thought "oh, another TBAC-like can." I was wrong. The Theorem S-braked is stellar! Like, it works...

I shot a 13 lbs rifle in 6.5 (my PRS Sportsman setup) and the braked performance AND suppression were quite pleasant. I wanted to shoot a lighter rifle as I know shooting my standard Open configuration (22 lbs) wouldn't really show the performance/weakness to me. Having shot the Maverick for so long, the braked Theorem S really surprised me. I will continue to use this through the remainder of the matches this season and, potentially, into the PRS Finale.

All shots were either in modified prone or off a standing barricade with no rear support (tripod).

Take it for what it's worth, this was just an in-my-pants-feeling review. ;-)

The Blaser R93 is a straight-pull action precision rifle offered in a multitude of calibers and barrel lengths manufactured by the German firearms manufacturer Blaser. Designed by Blasers' designer Mr. Meinhard Zeh in 1993, it had a number of features rare on modern hunting rifles, including a manual cocking system and a proprietary Blaser saddle scope mount[ for mounting the optic directly to the quick-change barrel.
The Blaser R93 is a truly modular system built around an aluminum alloy frame, offering differing stocks and barrels varying length and thickness available in chamberings from .22 LR to .375 H&H Magnum/.416 Remington Magnum/.458 Winchester Magnum size.
The barrel has a quick-change design which lets the user switch barrels using two screws and a hex key. Different bolt heads for different groups of calibers and magazine inserts are also user changeable, making the Blaser R93 a modular firearm capable of using a multitude of calibers in its chassis.
The rifle has a shorter overall length compared to more traditional designs due to the trigger being placed under the magazine. The rifle also has a reputation for being easy to disassemble and reassemble which can be an advantage when doing maintenance or during travelling, and has a reputation for having a repeatable zero upon reassembly. The Blaser R93 Tactical is a German bolt action sniper rifle, based on the Blaser R93 design. It has as variants the Blaser LRS 2 and Tactical 2. It is used by German and Dutch police forces as well as the Australian military and special police units. The rifles were manufactured by the German firearms manufacturer Blaser.
