Optics Advice for AR-15

I'm building my first AR-15 (JP, 18") and could use some recommendations for optics. I'll be shooting mostly bench and prone 25, 100, and 300yds. Budget is max $1200 (unless you make a strong case).

From what I've found I'm likely looking at a 1-6 or 1-8 LPVO, or something like a 2-10 with a possible offset RD. I'd really appreciate any thoughts on what makes the most sense for this!
For 300 and in, I'd be looking at a second focal plane 1-6. For your stated budget, including a good mount, I'd go with a Trijicon Credo 1-6, second focal plane. Not the HX. The one with the etched reticle with BDC for 5.56. Put it into a Leupold Mark AR mount. This is a very nice rig.

My primary LPVO is an NX8, but I take that rig out beyond 600 pretty often. Cut that distance in half and the NX8 is wholly unnecessary.

Honestly, if this is going to be a bench and prone gun, you can get a lot more for your money by going with a 2-10 or 2-12x. My 16" 800 yard rig has a Leupold Mark 4HD on top of it. You can get the non illuminated model for about $1k. In terms of actually sending rounds down range, the Mark 4 runs rings around the NX8. Don't get a scope with a 1x, unless you need that 1x and the form factor typical of an LPVO.

Of course, you could always go with a Vortex venom 1-6x AND an Athlon Helos 2-12 and have both and still be within your budget.

Heated seats in the last six (?) Vehicles I’ve owned. Other than accidentally, I’ve never turned them own. Maybe if I lived above the Mason-Dixon. My pick for greatest is A/C.

Sturm Ruger has bought Anderson Manufacturing

Something was for sale, someone bought it.

In the grand scheme of things, I guess I’m glad Ruger bought it and is intent to continue operations using the existing workforce.

I’ve read a few posts online speculating as to why Anderson was in a position to sell, but in the end, it doesn’t matter much - American workers who have been building America’s Rifle for many years are going to keep doing so, and doing so under what is apparently a more stable corporation.

Rifle Scopes Lightweight short range hunting optic?

I’ve had my eye on the Primary Arms 1-8x24 with the ACSS reticle too — seems like a solid balance of weight and features for hunting under 125 yards. Nightforce is awesome optically, but yeah, some folks do mention that eye box issue, so it’s good to be cautious there.

Also, if you want to peek at something a bit under the radar, the Gunnr Odin 1-8x24 is worth a look. It’s lightweight, rugged, with FFP and MIL reticle, and the glass clarity is surprisingly sharp for the price. Might fit your $1200 and weight goals nicely.

How important is the zero-stop feature to you? That helped me lock in shots faster during hunts.
Yes, lots of people knock the eye box on the NX8, but make no mistake, the PLXc isn't any better.

As far as the NX8 vs PLXc debate goes, this is the way I see it... They both have a true 1x, or as close to it as you can get in an LPVO. The PLXc has an arguably better 1x, as the NX8 on 1x does suffer from distortion around the perimeter of the view.

I think the NX8 is more robustly built. I'm not saying that the PLXc is badly built, just that the NX8 is built better, tougher.

The NX8 has a better top end. The image is just better and the reticle is a lot less cluttered.

Just choose what's more important to you.

Personally, if I was in the position of looking for a 100-300 yard hunting optic, with good glass and isn't overly heavy, I'd go with a Trijicon Credo 1-6. Not the HX. The one with the etched reticle.

Sturm Ruger has bought Anderson Manufacturing

They're a good machine shop with bad firearms standards. Ruger got a new machine shop, that's it. Really nothing to see here other than Ruger keeping up on production more effectively.
Ruger already said as much. They get an experienced work force and an already tooled shop. It’s perfect for them.

USMC M40A1 Return Stock Case Study (The Progression of McMillian Stocks)

Could it be 8916?

I bet you are right. Looking at it again, I think you nailed it.

E6378916 was a serial. I can double check when I get home when it was built. But it was a rifle that shows in the 2000 inventory log for Sniper School.

My bad, I always include heated/cooled seats with a vehicle’s climate controls. My opinion still stands though. Heated seats are the greatest automotive innovation ever

Steam rooms are not heated seats. You can make that into a sauna by turning the ac button on too

I like my heated seats at my age, but I LOVE my air conditioned seats more.

Will they finally get Fauci?

He’ll laugh all the way there and home. He can blab the truth all day long cause he can’t be charged since he has a blanket pardon.

Like shits ever gonna get real hard for him.
He won’t. There’s so many huge $$$$$ players involved that he can’t risk it. Besides, he has been lying so long for the industry, that this is just another day to him.

PortaJohn

if nothing else that happens, this event is the most graphic proof that all these wars of choice (and gov manipulation) that we have been engaged in for well > 100years are insanity and essentially evil. we killed > a mil of them. they managed to kill about 60K of us for absolutely no benefit to anybody except our ego driven blobs and the MIC.
the worst thing is that this has been obvious since Smedley Butler's day. completely ignored and re manipulated during the entire ME war efforts. propaganda, profits and crazed ideological power grabs.
rinse and repeat in Ukraine and Iran.
