Traveling with Handgun to Canada

I got his from the RCMP about a year ago in reply to me asking about bringing (hand)guns from the lower 48 to AK via Canada:

Hello,

The Canada Border Services Agency controls firearms imports.

As a general rule, you are not allowed to carry handguns for self-protection in Canada. Non-residents can usually bring a non-restricted rifle or shotgun into Canada for approved purposes such as hunting, target shooting, wilderness protection or in-transit movement by a reasonably direct route to another point outside Canada.

If you are visiting Canada with a firearm, please fill out a Non-Resident Firearms Declaration form before you arrive at your entry point into Canada to save you time. Do not sign the form; a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) customs officer must witness your signature. The fee is $25.

After a CBSA customs officer signs your Declaration, it is a temporary licence and it is valid for 60 days.

The Declaration is only valid for the person who signs it and only for the firearm(s) listed on it. If you are bringing more than three firearms into Canada, please fill out a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration Continuation Sheet.

The Declaration does not permit you to borrow firearms in Canada. The Declaration allows you to buy ammunition in Canada for the firearms listed on it. You can renew your Declaration for free before it expires. Please contact the Chief Firearms Officer of the province or territory.

In general, for a firearm that is classified as a non-restricted firearm (most hunting rifles and shotguns), you are only required to complete the Non-Resident Firearm Declaration form and declare the firearm with the Border Services Agent.

In the case of a restricted firearm (a handgun or rifle that is not prohibited), a Non-Resident Authorization to Transport (ATT) is also required and must also be obtained prior to your border crossing.

Please allow for 5 to 10 business days for processing. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that enough processing time has been provided for the issuance of an ATT. Please complete the attached Application for a Non-resident Authorization To Transport and send the form:

By mail: Firearms Service Delivery

Please note that firearms classified as prohibited are not permitted into Canada for any reason.

It WAS a joke, but I know the place (have read about it), and I know that the house is used by a puffin hunting club in Iceland, but I've never been there or eaten puffins.

Judging only by the taste of the divers and the sea ducks I've eaten I imagine it tastes like shit. Most birds that eat fish and meat take a lot of preparation to make them taste like anything but shit. I'm sure they'd be fine in gumbo...

Edit:
So, I was only kind of imagining that they must smoke them to make them at all edible. Some googling around delivers a "Puffin in milk" recipe from Iceland, where the birds are brined and then soaked in milk and cooked in the milk. This is is a sure sign you are trying to kill a nasty taste. I pretty much brine every duck breast overnight except teal and mallard, and soak divers and sea ducks in buttermilk overnight to try and reduce the taste of shit. Hey, some people like it. Just like some people like licking ass.

I guess they just pass shoot them. I can't imagine calling them into decoys, but honestly I have no idea. Knowing the Scandinavians are descended from sea going thieves and rapists (I am one), maybe they shoot them off their nests. 🤷‍♂️

The whale steaks in Alta, Norway are definitely kind of fishy.

The raspberry puree they put on top takes a bit of the edge off. But realistically, the bottle of French Red took the edge off better.

Ummmmmm whale steak. Had to try it once!

Does it taste like salty chicken?

2025 SnipersHide 3-Day, Imperial, NE July 25-27

THAT was a fantastic training cycle. Amazing weather. Amazing students who took a firm grasp of Gravity Ballistics and ran with it. Smooth delivery on our part and it just gets better each time we lay it out.

Thanks to the new and return students who made this a great run.

People ask me why I don't like Sig.......

Except for a P365 that I bought a few years back, most of my Sigs are 20+yo. They're all handguns and are all shooters. I have at least one in every caliber so I won't have to be choosey from which dead zombie I get my ammo during the apocalypse. Having said that, I am not buy another Sig--too much marketing and not enough QC these days..

Sidearms & Scatterguns Two more P320s discharge in Holster.

I remembered a report from magnum research on this I attached bellow, I realize they are a Sig competitor but Magnum research makes very good weapons and I doubt they would have released the report if it was inaccurate and Sig could sue them at any moment.
https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/23759277/tertin-slatowski-report.pdf

The information is under section D. He doesn’t specifically address the reset itself but states once the trigger travels the initial fraction of a inch without firing the internal safeties are disabled, and the weapon can fire in this state from being dropped or jostled.

As it turns out in recent reports this is a problem the military is having as well. I k ow there were a large number of discharges when law enforcement went with Glocks back in the day but that was due to officers bad habits of having their finger on the trigger combined with the reduction of pull weight between a double action and a striker. I’ve never seen anything credible on a Glock going off in a holster, but I’ve seen a few videos now of p320 going off with an officer just getting out of the car. Sig keeps releasing explanations on the videos but honestly the more it happens Sig seems to be jumping through mental hoops trying to explain it. Some of the videos are obvious user error, and that woman that threw it in her purse was just unbelievably negligent, but there are now a number of videos that are very hard to dispute, and to keep saying it was improperly holstered just isn’t working anymore.
Wasn't that also when Blackhawk holsters were the "in" thing and their draw usually dropped the trigger finger over the trigger?

Traveling with Handgun to Canada

Lots of web resources as well but apparently all out of date.

I had lots of questions, the Canadian Border guys got a little perturbed when I asked for their name and position for my records.

This is a helpful page on restricted firearms, which is about everything. https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-98-462/page-2.html

some hunting lengthgun numbers. I’m gonna build two of these things one of them with a 30 inch pipe and another with a 20 for hunting.
Im having really good luck with the 162 eldm now too. Very accurate, a bit faster than the 168 and a much better BC. I havent killed anything with them yet but they have a pretty good reputation for hunting.
