Precision AR -15 10 shot moa groups

I firmly believe people oversell the importance of buying the peak of the peak of top barrels when building new guns for precision, as new shooters.
I can't agree with that at all, if you're serious about attempting to shoot small groups, new shooter or not.

A high quality barrel from a known good & reliable source, takes one major variable off the table when you start trying to figure out what your problems are.

Obviously, you can't fully vet the barrel if you can't shoot, but a top end, or near top end barrel, is far more likely to be good than a more mundane version is.

Pay your money, take your chances, but it's never a bad decision to buy a good barrel.

I stuttered ...a lot. Parents divorced. moved what seemed liked ever 2 years, it sucked!.
disclaimer; I'm not a tough guy. But after a couple moves, when the bullies showed up...and shit was going down... I bloodied a nose, and all the bull shit stopped.

Side note; in the late 60's, when people were going to San Francisco to "wear flowers in their hair" I was in SEA... 'nuff said

LaRue MBT is still an option at $115?

I agree that it's a personal preference issue, but I also agree that the LaRue trigger face is too wide for my liking. They are both great triggers, and I have a couple Larues, but I prefer Geissele. G2S goes in most of my AR's, ssa-e goes in precision ones.

For reliability, I highly recommend either of these over the cassette type triggers

Is the .17HMR really much better than .22LR for varmints?

Look at the wind drift, though. If you’re not good at calling wind, that little .17HMR that’s hauling ass double time is going to run a .22 into the dirt. Even at just 100y, the .17 has less than a quarter of the wind drift of the .22 Minimag. Everybody always looks purely at trajectory with regard to MBPR, but calling wind is what everyone sucks at. BIG difference in performance there, and I’d argue that’s what will make the bigger difference in your ability to make shots where they count.

Your charts aren’t apples to apples, FYI. The .22 has inches and “clicks,” the .17 has inches and mrad. Does “clicks” = mrad on these?

As for cost, the .17 isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s about on par with mid-tier match .22 like Center-X. You can find it for around $10/box if you look. For the added performance, I think it’s worth it. 🤷‍♂️

Your PVA prefit experience

I’m definitely leaning towards using PVA. I like what I’ve been hearing and appreciate what PVA has said here as well. I’m definitely trying to add a few rifles to the stable at reasonable pricing where I try different things as well. I’m still pretty new to longer range shooting and have been fortunate enough to take advantage of some great LE discounts on some stuff I’ve purchased recently, but I think I’m at the point that I also want to try some stuff that I’m not familiar with regardless of cost. I also really like to support good folks, and innovative folks and it looks like PVA fits both of those criteria.

That’s the good part about picking an action that can take prefits or at least get sent to PVA once to get measured as you can use the same stock, action, scope rings/mount and scope and just order and change out barrels at home whether being caliber or length or contour and have different set ups. It saves you a bunch of money in the long run over having to buy a bunch of rifles fully set up. You can get a better set up and just swap barrels.

Self-proclaimed Pit Masters of SH- I've got some questions

My son mixes pickle juice and mustard together into a slime and spreads it on his brisket. I know it sounds gross, as I don’t really like either, but it bakes into a hard shell of bark, and seals the meat. All of the moisture stays inside the shell, and the meat comes out moist and tender. I need to have him post his method here. He tells it to me all the time, but after five minutes, my eyes glaze over, sort of like his do when I’m telling him about a stage at the last PRS match. lol…

LaRue MBT is still an option at $115?

The larue trigger is way too wide.

This seems like a personal preference issue lol.

I run MBT-2S triggers in all my AR lowers right now, but I also bought them when they were $80 or whatever. For that kind of money they can’t be beat, and I kind of like the wide, flat face they have. They often pop up “used” for $80-100 as well.

So are they still viable? Yes. Whether or not they fit your preferences is a different matter.

Is the .17HMR really much better than .22LR for varmints?

I shot 17HMR a ton when it first came out. Bought a couple cases of ammo when you could get it for $5.99 a box. Shot prairie dogs, coons, jack rabbits, and a bunch of smaller stuff.

Even got a coyote in the middle of a blizzard at night with it at like 200 to 250-ish Hail Mary shot. Although it was barely adequate. I spine'd him and his flopping around probably did just as much damage.

When ammo started climbing above $8.99 a box....I pretty much shelved the gun. I couldn't tell you when or what I shot it at last.

I like the .17HMR.....have zero love for the .17Mach2. Would really like a 17 Rem. I have no clue why you'd compare Stingers or Maxi Mags when 17HMR is far more accurate further out. They don't hold a candle at range.

Ammo prices have pretty much ruined everything shooting related. I'm just glad I got into this game with some guns before it went to shit so I can have a "different club for a different scenario"....wider point of view. I can't really recommend to newer shooters to buy a bunch of a different caliber guns. You can't count on ammo makers to fill shelves. And if they do....you can be assured they are fucking you more and more year after year on prices.

A suppressed .22lr can cover a lot of bases. Then a small caliber centerfire....like .223 or .204 (oh wait they decided to rape us on the cheaper to produce .204 for a while now....go figure). But I'm not spending +$15 for .17HMR...fuck that noise. I'll just pound whatever it is with something that has some real ass on it.
