What is the ideal SHTF optic?

I’ve posted opinions on the need for a legit MPVO battle optic. Most people would say a red dot or LPVO or both is best. I think a 1-10 LPVO might be ideal, but the optical limitations on a 10x erector limit performa CE and greatly increase prices. I think if the solution to a problem is $3500 then you haven’t really solved it.

Here’s my reasoning. I’m open to suggestion though, so you’re welcome to Change my mind.

I think when SHTF occurs, whether it is a local riot or something larger like power grid goes down, US Dollar devalues to worthlessness or a foreign invasion, the idea that you’ll have lots of run and gun 10-25 yard encounters is incorrect. This is what everyone trains for, but I think people are smarter than we give them credit for. The will to live is the most powerful human instinct. If you put millions of people in a life or death situation, they will not be running up your sidewalk in broad daylight to break down your door.

Let’s take the big cities, where gun ownership is oppressed by “the man”, gun knowledge and training is very low. Once SHTF, there will be an initial culling of the herd where the drug addicted and starving kill each other. After that wake up call, the remaining people, well over 50% I think, have hunkered down and pooled resources. They scavenged weapons and ammo from the dead. Hopefully these people will want to join the rest of society in the fight for survival, but if they don’t, they will likely be coming for our resources in the burbs and rural areas. Or they are foreign invaders intent on killing us. Either way, these combatants will be keeping a low profile. Even moving through suburbia, going house to house, you can expect it to be night time, they will hide behind cars, edge of buildings, privacy fences, any cover they can find. They will not be a mob walking down the middle of the street like portrayed in movies.

I read a report, sorry can’t remember where, that they examined foreign civil unrest situations of the past. Most of the shooting done inside cities and towns were at distances of 50 yards and greater. People don’t like to get shot! They aren’t very bold when they know everyone else has a gun. So most shooting was done from cover, pop up shoot, drop down. Targets are small. An exposed shoulder, a foot under a car, top of a head behind a wall etc. Hiding in empty houses and apartments and shooting out windows down the street. People would take pot shots from 200-300 yards away hoping to get lucky and then slink in and take the gun, food, car or whatever.

I think your handgun is there for the CQB stuff if needed, but what is really needed is the ability to return fire to attackers from 50-300 yds away, shooting from behind cover. They aren’t going to knock on your front door. When they shoot, your return fire target will be a few inches in size. Quick precision will be needed in a gun that is not 20# and a red dot will be insufficient at times. I think the ideal optic will be a 1-6x, 1-8x LPVO or a 2-10x, 2-12x MPVO. I personally would prefer the latter, but there are no great candidates right now with a reticle purpose built for this kind of shooting. Exceptions are maybe the chinese made Athlon and Swampfox 2-12x’s.

So again, I’ll ask, what is the ideal SHTF optic? Does this optic even exist yet? Or do you disagree completely with everything stated above and you believe red dot is the way to go or your 3-18x will do just fine?

P.S. - I don’t think I’m alone on this. Many well regarded rifle scope reviewers have mentioned a desire for improved choices in this area. C_DOES on YT, @Glassaholic here on the hide, Brass Facts as well as Barrel & Hatchet on YT. SupersetCA, now called Gunners Guild on Rumble has made similar statements. This purpose built MPVO, It’s not just to occupy the space in between all the other groups. In fact, I would argue, it is the most important category.

Berger 153.5’s

I got some Berger 153.5 in the other day to try out in my 6.5x284 shehane bench rifle. Figured it would be a good candidate with that BC behind that cartridge. Just did a ladder charge 3 shot groups at 100yds to check my speeds with V555. Seated it .010 off the lans and I was surprised. Next step is to check groups at 300-400yds but has anyone else experienced this bullet to be that forgiving? Didn’t matter what charge I had behind it. It just shot.

Bartlein Barrels Update

Gonna post this here because the bolt gun forum gets the most views. Dear Forum Moderator, If you need to move this post to another forum that is more appropriate please do so.

I/We post on SH quite a bit. So I figured I should make a post about this.

Just want to be up front and honest with everyone here. We are telling customers the same thing on the phone.

Depending on what you are ordering and when you order it....lead times can be as long as 10-12 months right now.

Some guys (not necessarily anyone from the Hide) when we've told them this they have gone off on us on the phone about it. So we are taking a beating at times but I want everyone to understand that we are all in this boat together. Ammunition and bullet makers etc...are backed up, gun manufacturers are backed up, action makers, stock makers and scope manufacturers.

I won't name the ammo maker but we have had some ammo on order since May of 2020 and I cannot get a delivery date/time frame. We're not mad at them....it is what it is.

We've been helping out individual customers to manufacturers to ammo makers etc...when they/you have an emergency that won't change. We do what we can / when we can.

I know of other barrel makers lead times are out pretty far as well. So it's not just us.

I'm also asking and I will use this as an example...a guy wins a barrel gift certificate at a match. Calls in to redeem the certificate and order the barrel. He was told 10 months. He went off on my office guy about it and demanded the barrel should be done next month. So don't put anyone in front of the firing squad for this. Free or not....we are doing what we can to take care of everyone in a timely fashion.

I don't care what you are buying and from whom....barrels, scopes, ammo etc....guys please do your best to plan ahead and plan for the worst case scenario. If you burn up 4 barrels a year in matches and only have one brand new spare left....get it on order. Regardless of where you get it from. If your planning on building a new rifle right now and already have the stock and action and barrel on order and will need a scope for it.... don't wait...get the scope on order as well.

I don't for see things getting any better anytime soon for any of us. Like I said, "We're all in the same boat!"

Pretty much the whole shop here is working 55 to 60+ hours a week. This next pay period....just between 3 guys in the shop they have a 153 hours of overtime alone! That's in a two week period and that isn't a typo!

I've also been asked and will put it out here as well..."Are we o.k. on steel?" The answer is yes! No steel shortages. We have orders scheduled into 2022 already. Nothing is holding us up from making barrels. Just not enough hours in the week!

Any questions please feel free to call. If you post a question here I'll answer it the best I can and as quick as I can but keep in mind...I don't log in everyday.

Another Unscientific AAC Ammo Comparison

Our club precision matches are on a "summer break" here in Las Vegas, so I thought it would be a good time to test some of this Palmetto State AAC ammo against IMI 77 grain Razorcore. I've been using IMI exclusively for the past few years in gas-gun precision matches. Its been consistent and reliable, I've won matches with it, but its expensive - usually hovering around $1.00/round (right now its on sale for $0.83). Also, I'm not loving all of the case head swipe when shooting it suppressed, despite my attempts to tune it out. So here we go...

Ammos tested:
IMI 77 gr Razorcore HPBT Match ($0.83 / round)
AAC 75 gr BTHP Match w/ Cannelure ($0.60 / round)
AAC 77 gr OTM ($0.62 / round)

Rifle Specs:
16" Rainier Match barrel, 1/8 twist
Omega 300 suppressor

100 Yard 5-shot Groups, ranked in order:
1. AAC 75 grain BTHP Match - 0.547" (0.522 MOA)
2. AAC 77 grain OTM - 0.618" (0.590 MOA)
3. IMI 77 grain Razorcore - 0.730" (0.698 MOA)

Chrono performance:

2. IMI 77 grain Razorcore

3. AAC 75 grain BTHP Match

IMG_9734.PNG

My Thoughts:

Along with the groups, I shot a couple boxes of each ammo at 1, 2 and 3 MOA plates at 551 yards to see how it performed at distance. Winds were generally calm. Despite the cheapest ammo (AAC 75 gr) grouping the best for me today, at distance it was not great, and I really struggled to make consistent impacts on even the 3 MOA plate. I will not be purchasing any more of the AAC 75 gr. But the AAC 77 gr OTM was a different story: I was ringing steel just as consistently as with the IMI Razorcore. It is quite a bit slower than the IMI, but no case head swipe on any of the brass.

The true test will be shooting a few matches with it, but long-story-short, I'm placing a larger order of the AAC 77 grain OTM today. At $0.62/round I really hope it continues to perform like it did for me today.

*Oh side note: the reason the chrono data on the IMI was only 13 rounds, my Garmin Xero didn't save my first session for some reason, and I only had 13 rounds left. But this was comparable to many previous sessions I had saved for the ammo.
