Using Tape on the back of a loaded round to check or set headspace. . . .

When proper Headspace gauges are not available, this is a pretty widely used method of spitballing a sorta-close headspace. It has been used for a long time and is considered a rough cheat code to make sure the HS is in the right zip code.

My concern recently is that we have been seeing ammo quality (consistency specifically ) being all over the place. Seemingly in the last 20yrs it has gotten worse instead of better. Maybe because of 2 or 3 back to back ME wars and the producers not taking time to PM their machines and double check QC processes as much. (?)

Anyway . . . . . . . my point is that I have a literal pile of factory ammo that won't go into correctly headspaced factory chambers.

The worst offender is Hornady but I have a few Federal, Win and even Sig.
These rounds look perfect visually but are too long on the shoulder datum -> headstamp dimension. We have also seen a few that are too short on the opposite of that dimensional spectrum to the point they are inducing ignition problems.

I don't think using such a round with tape on the rear to "set" or check headspace would be "dangerous" but if the sample cartridge was out of spec, it could cause excessive brass stretch.
It could even cause the phone to ring at shops like Wade's to bitch about an out of spec chamber that is actually in spec.

@spife7980 I'm not arguing or trying to bust your chops. Just sharing my personal thoughts based on personal concerns and experience, neither of which proves I'm right. So this post is simply meant as food for thought and a "rumble strip" warning to proceed cautiously for the novices.

6 ARC headspace

So... got an 18" 6 ARC barrel with a rifle gas system, and type II bolt a while back, and finally got around to shooting it not too long ago. It's a new cartridge for me, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been using the L.E. Wilson case gauges, along with their case gauge depth micrometer in other cartridges with great results... so I was a little shocked when I dropped a fired case in the gauge and it visibly stood proud of the top  Ran the depth mic down, and it showed it at +11 over '0'. Plunking an unfired factory round in there showed as -3 or so. That range seems... excessive, to me.

Like most comparators, that thing is still a 'relative' measurement. I dug out the appropriate shoulder angle insert for my Sinclair headspace comparators, mounted them on the Mitutoyo calipers, and zeroed things out. Loaded round measured 1.128", fired cases measured 1.141" or so. Yikes.

Coughed up the $$$ for a set of go, no-go and *field* gauges in 6 ARC. When they finally arrived, I got the following measurements:

Loaded round: 1.128"
Go gauge: 1.130"
No-go gauge: 1.134"
Field gauges: 1.138"
Fired brass: 1.141"

Then, I went and pulled the upper apart, popped out the ejector pin from the bolt, cleaned the bolt and chamber (never seen that much brass buildup in *either* the bolt or the chamber of my .223 ARs), and found that the bolt would rotate closed on the go gauge (as it should)... but it also closed on the no-go gauge, and damn near closed on the field gauge.

I double checked the depth of the bolt face; it is a type 2 (0.136" deep) bolt.

I'm guessing this isn't supposed to be the 'normal' amount of shoulder stretch on firing factory ammo in a 6 ARC barrel?

Any ideas what might be the likely culprit here? Chamber set up for a type 1 bolt (0.125" deep) instead of a type 2? Seems like that would almost account for the difference I'm seeing here. Or more likely the chamber is just f$cked up, some other way?

The fired brass coming out measuring longer than the chamber is another one that had me going 'WTF?!?' Someone else suggested that it might point towards a gas system issue, with the bolt trying to unlock before the pressure has dropped enough for the case shoulder to release from the chamber walls.

Cheap NV optic

We have some bolt action and sbr semi auto rifles in 300 blk. We are talking 100 yard max mostly unless just hazing pests past that.

We shoot subs and want to get a NV optic or two, and money is tight right now.
They will be used on hogs as well and are considered pests and legally shot or otherwise dispatched at nite. Other chicken stealing and egg sucking pests as well

Any of you use these I found from ads on the hide?

Bullets getting jammed into seater die

I typically use Redding type S bushing dies and Forster micrometer seating dies. When I started I bought all basic RCBS dies and quickly upgraded for calibers in which accuracy was a priority. I’ve never had an issue.
That being said I went to load some 300 black out subs using my RCBS dies. They hadn’t been used in a couple years so I spray them down with CLP inside and out to clean any residual gunk.
The cases were a combination of new Starline, once fire Starline from my gun, and once fired from friends rifles. They were all sized with the same RCBS sizing die. Case mouths were chamfered. Graphite lube was used. 3 of the 10 cases (no Starline) pushed the bullet into the die getting completely stuck. The case came out with a massively oversized neck that then wouldn’t hold a bullet. All cases were the same manufacturer. While I would like to blame the brass I’m not sure how the brass could be responsible. Bullets are 220 grain SMK seconds. I’m considering using this as a reason to finish my collection of Redding and Forster dies. Ideas?

Optics Minox ZP5 3-15

Hey all,

Selling my ZP5 3-15. It's mostly brand new. I took it out once to a friend's ranch to do a bit of LR shooting and then it's been with me hunting a couple times.

I rarely use the rifle this optic is on and the few times I've used it, I've realized more and more I do not really care much for this reticle. I also have another FN SPR that is needing glass so I've decided that selling this could go towards replacing it with something that has a reticle that works for me plus have a bit leftover to put towards glassing my other SPR. There are 3 very small blemishes that I have pointed out.

1. The time I took it out LR shooting I didn't realize that my rifle was ejecting the spent brass onto the windage turret and erector housing. I've done my best to photograph the slight damage it has. It's only cosmetic and does not interfere with its functionality.

2. There is also a very small ding to the scope bell. It took a bit of the finish off but I cannot tell that it is dented in. It appears to only be surface.

3. It also looks like the the objective lens has a very small scratch that runs horizontally. I just noticed that right now while photographing it. I do not think I have ever noticed it before while looking through it.

I am asking $1,800.00 plus shipping & insurance. I prefer cashier's check, money order, USPS certified check and will ship once funds have cleared and been collected into my account after depositing said check.

I still have factory box and the things that came with it.

Run N Gun rifle - Plan B/Rearden vs Area 419 Hellfire

BLUF: Does anyone run Hellfires on lightweight gas guns? I see them all the time on heavy bolt guns. I'm trying to figure out if my use case is appropriate.

I've just picked up my first suppressor (B&T Print-XH) and so I need to switch my muzzle devices over to something compatible and have to pick a brake. I mostly compete in Run N Gun matches where length and weight are critical. I'm a high performer and frequently place on the podium, so I spend more time than some folks optimizing gear.

I expect to run about 80% unsuppressed so my primary criteria is brake performance, not as a suppressor host. Cans are heavy & hot and both of those are disadvantages in a RnG match when you have to run 5-10 miles with the risk of burning your leg carrying a slung rifle with a blazing hot can after a 45 round stage. However, I still want to be able to attach a suppressor on occasion for night matches, etc. I need to outfit 5 rifles. I was originally gonna go with Rearden SPB muzzle brakes and a Wolfpack Low Profile HUB Adapter (lightweight, minimum OAL) and call it a day, but the Hellfire system has caught my eye.

Performance: Hellfire wins, but only slightly
I believe that the Hellfire will stabilize the muzzle better under recoil with less dot movement and allow faster follow up shots. (Based on my experience having shot a 5.56 with SPB and a 6ARC with 3 Port hellfire on them and the 6arc was smoother). On the other hand, the extra weight hanging off the muzzle will absolutely slow down the swing on transitions. Those of you who don't compete may scoff at this, but stages are won and lost by tenths of a second, so these small factors do matter.

Resilience/Durability: I think it's a tie
Any plan B muzzle device has exposed threads that can be damaged and RnG matches are brutal on gear. Whereas there are no exposed threads on Hellfire. But with a Hellfire system and suppressor, there's no sacrificial baffle to protect the can to take some of the abuse to the can with a short barrel (which is where the majority of my usage will be). So I think these factors balance out.

Price: Hellfire wins
The difference here isn't enough to sway me 1 way or the other, so it's a moot point, but just to be thorough.... It would be $300 for Hellfire (I would buy a 2 Port Hellfire + 4x universal adapters). It would be $400 for Plan B (5x Rearden SPB). I only plan on buying 1 Hellfire brake, at least to start, since it's so easy to swap the brake from rifle to rifle - basically QD.

Length and Weight: Plan B wins
The Hellfire 2 port brake is 2.5x heavier (4.1 oz compared to 1.7 oz) and 0.6" longer than an SPB.

Thoughts?

Sig P320 Paranoia Setting in.

Last summer I bought a Sig p320 X-Ten Comp pistol to pack around in bear country. I still get out a bit, but at 69 years old I went with the comp and a dot. Last week I added 26/70 grit to the frame. Here's a pic:
sig.JPG

The damn thing shoots pretty good and I am using Extreme Penetrator bullets so I get plenty of gas to operate the comp. I actually kind of like the thing. Up until recently I haven't really been to concerned about the uncommanded discharge chatter. Well, it looks like Sig can no longer place the blame on the user. Uncommanded discharge is apparently a real thing, albeit very rare. My Sig also has a trigger job by MCarbo consisting of springs and polishing.

I have the opportunity to trade it at the LGS toward a FN 510 Tactical. I know nothing about FN, never even shot one. Online reviews tend to show the 510 is GTG. I do know there are some pretty decent comps being made for the 510T if I want to tame it down. Here's a pic:
fn-510-tactical-10mm-auto-47in-fde-pistol-221-rounds-1794045-1.jpg

If you were walking around in my moccasins, would you just keep the Sig? Am I being paranoid? Also, a buddy of mine tells me that if I go with a different gun, ditch the optic. Shit happens to fast to have a dot in the way. He's a Grandmaster USPSA Production shooter with good vision. I am a former USPSA Limited shooter (GM) with so-so vision, but I still have a good index.

I hope I get some decent opinions on this subject...being the pit and all. ;)

Accessories For sale: Desert Tech SRS-A2 Carbon fiber rail

For sale is my custom Desert Tech SRS-A2 carbon fiber rail. Can accept integral suppressors with a 1.5” OD
$250 each
I have tons of them available.
They are 3.5-4 oz lighter than OEM, (you can feel the deference free shooting the rifle)
Much more sturdy, very little play when weight is put on the barrel pushing down. (increasing off the bipod accuracy in my testing)
Much nicer to hold, especially when it is cold.

Ukraine war Bullshit.

This has gone far enough. And the he bullshitters are now in high gear.

A link to the article is first:

Never mind the article, the comments after the article are the important part. Everyone in the comments seems to think that Russia started the war.

Russia did not start this war. If you don't know that you are severely misinformed. Who started this war? WE DID.

And I'm not going to spoon feed you the details. Do your own freaking research. That's all have to say about that.

People who dump kittens and puppies should be strung up….

With spring and summer here… been a rash of people dumping off unwanted litters around the area. Kittens and puppies both.

Not bothering to take them to the shelter (paperwork and fees? Don’t know if shelter charges for surrenders of litters??) and leaving them in a parking lot or by the road?? That is lower than whale shit.

On the bright side…. This little guy adopted me on Tuesday. After a bath, a couple of days of quarantine away from the other cats and a vet check… he thinks he rules the house.

Meet General “Blackjack” Pershing. He has been stuck to me like glue and eating like a cavalry horse! He loves belly rubs!!

IMG_9749.jpeg

So far Boudicca is afraid of him. General Sherman is not happy. And Pouncy the old man who has been through this before… seems to be accepting him fine. Couple of weeks, they will all be sleeping in a pile together…

Baby kittens are so cute!!!
