Rifle Scopes Nightforce NX8 - 4-32x50mm

I plan on buying a NX8 - 4-32x50mm F1 in the early spring and want to budget for "extras" .
What lens caps do you recommend? Are the factory NF flip up lens caps worth the money or is there better out there ( Butler Creek), especially for the ocular cover so dope is easily seen?
Also who makes a good scope cover for that model?
I have had great luck with Nightforce 4 screw rings for mounting the scope and planned on using those unless someone has a better suggestion.
BTW, I'll just be doing occasional shooting at 300, 600 and 1000 yard ranges.

2024 Christmas gift thread (#2)! Please read instructions to participate!

***This thread is for your entry into the Christmas gift giveaway. I started another thread where we can have a discussion about this gift thread, it's also posted in the Vintage Section. Please go to that thread to ask questions or make comments about this thread.***

Gentlemen, last year I had a Christmas gift thread and it seems like everyone enjoyed it, so I'm going to do it again! I pulled 33 lucky items out of my collection and I'm going to be giving them away to 33 lucky Sniper's Hide members! If we hit 5 pages, I'll also donate $500 to the Marine Scout Sniper Heritage Foundation (the donation will be from everyone who is participating in this Christmas gift thread). I thought about starting this thread earlier, but a Christmas gift thread should be around Christmas, not a "half the month December gift thread," lol.

Here's the thread rules, please read them carefully before posting in this thread:

● This is not a discussion thread, so please do not deviate from what you're supposed to post here, or you'll be disqualified

● All you have to do to participate in this thread is make 1 single post with the word "M40" in it

● Each Sniper's Hide member only gets 1 post in this thread, you will be disqualified if you make multiple posts

● If you post anything other than the word "M40" in your single post, you will be disqualified

● Only Sniper's Hide accounts created yesterday (Dec. 22, 2024) and prior are able to participate. This is to prevent random people coming to this forum and creating new accounts with the hopes of winning something. It also ensures that only current members of our community are eligible to participate

● You can enter a single post in this thread at anytime between when I make this first post and midnight (12am Central) on Christmas Day (December 25, 2024). Any posts made after this time will be disqualified (I'll do my best to login at that time and make a cutoff post)

● When you make your single post in this thread, there will be a post number assigned to it by the forum system. This number is your identification number and it will be used in the random number generator. This is why it's so important to only make 1 single post in this thread

Here's how I'll choose the winners:

● I'll vett all of the posts and record any disqualifying posts

● I'll use a random number generator to draw numbers and I'll post the results so that everyone can see the randomly chosen numbers

● The random number generator will run the entire range of post numbers in this thread

● The 1st number drawn will win the 1st gift, the 2nd number drawn will win the 2nd gift, etc. and will continue in this order for all 33 gifts

● I'll have the random number generator choose more than 33 numbers, even though there are only 33 gifts. This is to ensure that I have enough numbers drawn in case any of the numbers link up to a disqualified post. In the event that a number is disqualified, I'll move down the number list to the next number

● Once the first 33 randomly selected qualifying numbers are matched up with their respective gifts, I'll reach out to the people who made those posts and get their shipping information (no one needs to contact me, I'll contact the winners)

I'm not affiliated with Sniper's Hide in any way, I'm just doing this because I thought that it would be awesome(and last year's Christmas gift thread was extremely successful). I'll be the person vetting the entries in this thread and the person drawing the winning post numbers. I started another thread where we can have a discussion about this gift thread, it's also posted in the Vintage Section. Please go to that thread to ask questions or make comments about this thread.

To the Mods reading this thread, this is not a sales thread or an attempt to circumvent the buy/sell/trade rules of this forum. This is just a fun thread where I hand out some cool stuff to my fellow community members for free. No money or anything else will be exchanged, the winners will get their item for free and I'm also paying the shipping/insurance costs to mail these items out. This is 100% free to everyone who participates.

Please keep this thread in the Vintage Section, this is where I hangout on the site and I can easily keep an eye on this thread and the other discussion thread. Please contact me if you have any questions about this thread, and I hope that it doesn't break any forum rules.

Here's the 33 Christmas gifts, I hope these are things that you guys might enjoy (well, we know that everyone will want the first gift!).

Gift #1: Extremely rare original USMC M40 Redfield 40X scope base and Redfield high 1" scope rings welded mount. This welded mount is completely unique, it's literally the only one known to exist! We have no idea if this is some type of special one-off mount that was created by Marine 2112 armors at the RTE shop, or if it's a fantasy piece that a collector created long ago. Either way, this welded mount is made with an extremely rare Redfield 40X scope base. If you collect/study M40's, you know how these original Redfield 40X scope bases never come up for sale, and is one of the most difficult original M40 pieces to find:

Speaker Johnson: California Disaster Relief Likely to Have Strings Attached.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that California disaster relief would have strings attached.
Host Kristen Welker said, “Let’s talk about disaster relief for California. I want to tell you something that California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote recently. He said, ‘There must be no conditions, no strings attached to disaster aid.’ And yet we know that there’s a big conversation happening right now on Capitol Hill about linking disaster aid for California to an increase in the debt limit which has been a traditionally really thorny issue. Are you and can you commit that California disaster relief won’t have strings attached?”
Johnson said, “No, I won’t commit that because we have a serious problem in California. Listen, there are natural disasters. I’m from Louisiana. We are prone to that. We understand how these things work and then there is also human error. When they make policies that make disaster worse, we have to factor that in. In California, over the last couple of years, they cut $100 million from forestry management and cut $18 million from L.A.’s Fire Department, putting them into the other crazy priorities and 117 million gallon reservoir that was left empty for a year outside Pacific Palisades. Those are decisions they made based on whatever their ideas were, but it made it worse, and everyone knew it would, and the risk was there.”
Welker said, “So it could be linked to the debt limit.”
Johnson said, “Potentially, that’s one of the things we’re talking about.”

DAMN RIGHT IT SHOULD HAVE STRINGS ATTACHED AND SHOULD ONLY BE SPENT WITH APPROVED SUPPLIERS!

Premium repeater action recommendation

Thinking to get another bolt action for my new rifle, most likely would be Short Action, but I am only to Long Action with just 308 and magnum bolts.

Have used Definance Ruckus, Terminus Zeus. Thinking between Impact 737R, Falkor 7even, Lone Peak Fusion and BAT Hammerhead or anything you would like to compare with these.

I would only use it for casual F class style long range competition shooting and some PRS local match, so bolt lift angle wouldn't matter unless it touches scope. Barrel would be cut by gunsmith instead of prefit.

Would like to get some end user experience in terms of bolt smoothness/cycling, easiness to tune(trigger timing if uses hanger) and any issue/improvements these action could have.

Any input would be really appreciated to help me make my decision.

Remove PVD off Solus Action?

I've got a Solus action coated by PVD and a stainless barrel to go on it. Up till now I've always tried to stick with stainless machine finish and just be done with it. Didn't have that option w/the Solus action...so I'm wondering if anyone has ever removed the black PVD off the outside of an action like that? I don't want to mess with the inside or the bolt because of tolerances. Was thinking I could tape all of that off real good and maybe just blast it with baking soda or walnut shell to stay on the less abrasive end of the blasting spectrum. Then again the rail might end up a bit loose if I blast a few thousands of coating off the outside.

Hoping someone has experience with this sort of thing OR has already done it & either screwed it up and can tell me "NO SAVE YOURSELF" or the such?

IF YOU WANT TO SAVE YOURSELF SOME TIME (and not read JR1200W3 & I pissing in each other's Cheerios for what I hope is just fun)...

  • kl3309 wrote: The proper way to do this would be to disassemble, blast, machine/polish/lap, and re-assemble. If you're not willing to do that then pass it on to a pro refinisher.
  • I had some bad information on how PVD worked
  • 308Pirate wrote:
how PVD coatings work. The workpiece being coated is not transformed in any way.

The material to be deposited as a coating onto the workpiece is vaporized in a plasma stream/flame. Said plasma stream deposits the coating onto the object being coated.

Removing the coating will need mechanical/abrasive action as you correctly guessed. The problem lies in that you don't know the thickness of the coating that you're removing and so you don't know if you've removed any of the base metal under the coating.

You're correct to not want to remove the coating from parts where fit is important but not for the reason you think. The fit between two parts is not necessarily affected by the dimensional tolerance of each part. Tolerances are allowed variations from a nominal dimension, are fixed by the design engineer, and are not known by you unless you have the manufacturing drawings for the parts in question. Besides nobody can change or alter tolerances. What you can do is change the actual dimensions of the mating parts which will affect how they fit together. Your actions may remove enough material to render one or more parts out of tolerance or the part may still be in tolerance because you didn't remove too much material. You will never know by feeling how the parts fit together.

  • Final outcome: "it's a dumb idea" but not for the reasons I was originally thinking. It's a lot of work and cost to remove such a coating. Most importantly because the coating is engineered into the product specifications it would be nearly impossible wo/the engineer drawings to know exactly what problems I could be introducing. Seems it would be far ahead to spend extra money to get a stainless Zermatt Arms TL3, SR3, or even Defiance Outcast (all give the remington 700 footprint w/savage barrel threads)

Tips For a City Slicker Moving to the "Country"...?

Hello All,

Just bought a house on a couple of acres of dirt.

Looking for some tips with the following items:

I need an entry-level option for maintaining a dirt road. A lot of my neighbors have tractors, but that's well outside my budget for now (we all share a 1-mile-long dirt road with lots of hills). At the moment, I could probably afford a creative $3K option if anyone has any creative solutions...? It might be a year or two before I have "tractor money." 😅

Anyone have any noteworthy experiences with septic tanks? Mine is fenced off, so there's not much worry of it getting parked on or driven over.

I've got a shared well (50/50 with my neighbor, no other parcels have an interest in the well). Is there anything I need to be mindful of with regard to water usage/conservation? I've been wondering whether drilling a private well would yield any benefit (either an "administrative" benefit or a benefit as a water resource) ... Not quite sure.

The property includes an elevation change of about 15-20 feet with the home on the upper half, and the back yard having a cliff-like drop with a dirt ramp near the middle of the property. I see a lot of potential with this set up, but not sure of the downsides (other than flood/drainage for the lower portion). Anything I should be taking into consideration as far a property maintenance/development?

Any help is appreciated!

A sigh of Relief! (Well, for another year, at least)...

Well, I found out today that my Homeowner's Insurance will be renewed for 2025 with only an 11.58 per month increase, keeping the premium under $200.00 per month for another year.

I spoke to the office agent this morning. We'll see if the official notice backs up what she said. But, for now,

WWHHHHEWWW! Could have been a whole lot worse!
