LMT .308 MWS

Quick question…if I don’t care about ambi features and I plan on changing the furniture anyways, is there any reason not to get the MWS Defender?

The mars lowers have a bit of a flare/funnel on the magwell but besides that and ambi you’re not gaining anything I don’t think

Fluted my 20"CL 308 barrel to try and loose alittle weight.

And gave @96C new Low Vis Gear, Aurora bag a run.

The defender is fine. The mars has a couple nice refinements though. I have both.

Ambi is the only reason to get the MARS-H.

LMT didn't even bother making them until they were contracted to do so IIRC.

Just picked up my first MWS (308 gas gun for that matter) and will be running it suppressed, likely 100% of the time.

Does anyone have experience with their setup paired with a YHM Resonator R2, or even the older Resonator?

The rifle I picked up has the newer, dual extractor bolt paired with a 16" SS barrel. I've read about the XH buffers/springs and RCA gas keys, but don't want to mess with those unless I have to.

Hmm, I've used those before on short barreled 5.56 guns - wasn't aware they offered them for LMT, thanks!

Is this a solution for the MWS platform that doesn't require any other mods (XH buffer, springs, etc)?

In the 5.56 application there was some speculation as to gas port erosion on the tube and what kind of long term solution this would provide. Is that generally no longer a concern?

Not that you're running out of a helo at night with a boom stick bouncing off your kit,. but I'm not an ambi mag release fan with the 7.62 varients.. The LMT has the best fence of the bunch and it's not always good enough
I run a Radian 10.5 at work and I’ve hit the ambi mag release multiple times with my gear. I like having the Ambi charging handle and safety but the rest is of no use to me.

Thrasher, if your going to run a can, you will need to get the BRT tube or at a minimum, get the buffers and springs suggested. You should enjoy your new blaster, its big fun.

If you get the BRT, you should be able to skip buffers and springs.

Its a little bit of a unicorn for the large-frame MWS but I run a Gemtech adjustable BCG in mine and it works great with a can. They are more common for the small frame guns and I run a Gemtech adjustable BCG in one rifle and a Bootleg adjustable BCG in the other. Both also work great with a can. I certainly understand the argument about additional moving parts for a duty gun but mine isn't a duty gun. I shoot it at the range and coyote hunting. I wanted to ability to switch it on or off and not require a special tool to tune the system in the field. I really like both the Gemtech and Bootleg products.

Thanks for the insight. Sounds like the gas tube is the way to go!

The MWS arrived yesterday. I have a spuhr 5602 waiting for the MK5 3.6-18 to arrive:

Running through the BRT gas tube configurator:

Buffer is CAR H3, but what are y’all selecting for the spring?

I called LMT and they said the factory spring is between a Carbine and Rifle length…

Report back once you get some shooting in. Personally, the BRT tube didn't make nearly as much of a difference when running as switching to the XH buffer did in my MWS. The combination of both is a good improvement though. YMMV, of course.

Finally got the MWS out today after getting it fitted with a Spuhr 5602 and Mk5 combo. The old man and I were ringing steel at 850 without much effort from the 16" stainless steel barrel shooting m118lr. Video below, listen for the impact.

The thing shot phenomenally well, even with my YHM Resonator R2, which didn't seem to add that much back pressure. I was originally worried and was a click away from ordering a BRT gas tube but decided to shoot it first and see how it performed. Looks like I'm getting about a 2:30-3 ejection with the can on, super happy with this result. I looped the ejection pattern below as well.

Right on!! Beautiful gun and nice shooting! I love shooting with my old man. He responds the same way… shocked every time he hits anything further than 100yds. I cherish the times we go shooting. Have yet to shoot my MWS 14.5” PW… waiting on my Sandman S FDE to get released!

In my opinion, they are both very nice optics.

Better field of view with the Vortex, less fisheye at low power with the Atacr. I do prefer the illumination function and reticle on the Atacr though.
I've had both on my MWS and I agree, both are very nice. I found the new FCDMx reticle to be useful on moving targets at distance and very little fisheye at 1x.

With the G3, I felt the need to run an offset T2. With the ATACR, I don't.

Haha you're absolutely right. You cannot beat quality time on the range with dad...and if you manage to make a few hits out at distance, even better.

That sandman S should be sweet! Love idea of a short can paired with that barrel length.

I currently have a Sandman K on my 16", but might switch to a sandman S if I do a 14.5" barrel.

You could always remove the tube, drill a smaller port through the top, and increase the size until you get it running how you want. When you get your port size ironed out, order a BRT tube with the exact port size you want.

Apologies for spamming the thread recently, but I've had some fun setting this this up.

After I was able to verify the rifle could shoot, it was time for an Aervoe baptism. I think it's done, for now.

That looks really good!
I’ve got a few cans of Aervoe sitting on a shelf in the gun room waiting for me to gain the courage to paint my beloved MWS.
These pics are inspiring. I’m getting closer…

Thanks! Looking forward to getting it worn in.

Go for it. There's something liberating about spraying a perfectly fine rifle.

Glorious. What calibers?

And can you make the extensions from scratch, or do you have to use donor barrels?

The diet continues. Dropped a good bit of weight switching to a titanium BCG and Superlative adjustable gas block.

Looks great. Curious on the stock and grip selection. I am looking to potentially swap out my LMT DMR stock for something lighter for some overall weight savings. Do you have any thoughts or preference on the Magpul SL vs the SLS version that you're running? The enhanced butt pad seems like a no brainer.

On the grip, any specific reason you went with the MOE? Curious to put a K2 on to see if the more vertical grip angle would be more comfortable. Currently have the ergo grip on but not the biggest fan of the feel.

I've used lots of SL and SLS stocks on my guns. I think the SL is a simple stock for a AR15, but the SLS has a slight bit more heft to it, so I think it makes more sense to put in on AR10's.

As for grips. I do like simple MOE grips. They feel nice in my larger hands and they are cheap. Some of the other models have weird angles or are very small, which I don't care for.

How do you like that PRS lite? Does it install on the LMT buffer tube?

Couldn't leave good enough along. Still tinkering away with my MWS.

I got the while hair up my butt I wanted to try to shave 1 lb from the gun using a variety of methods. Some more invasive than others.

Is this a rifle length gas 6.5 or a longer hand guard the +2 fits under?

15.5” handguard with rifle +2 gas system.
Looks like the 15.5" contract handguard.
Looks good.

As I sit here now over one year past my estimated delivery date for my upper, I wish I had picked one of these up...

@unclemoak, any thoughts of offering your own LMT MWS barrels? I'd be ready to get in line for a 14.5" 6.5CM... Or something exotic like a 6GT would be exciting.

Who has a LMT 308 DI BGC Bolt (Carrier Group) that they would be willing to part with? Full or Semi Auto would be fine.

I have everything but the BGC. I need entire bolt and carrier.
