Disclaimer: I'm not a metallurgist. So I will throw out my amateur opinion based on real life experience. It's either direction of impact or shock of impact, but when you drop something made of spring steel there is a good chance it will shatter in the near future under load. I don't know the reason, but I have seen it happen too many times not to give it credence.

We had a gunsmithing class when I was in high school. It was nothing to see someone walking around campus with a rifle. The amazing part is that this was in California and I’m under 50.
