A slew of SP10 questions

First post here; info searches have sent me here enough over the years that I know this is THE place to go with questions like this, so I finally joined. Sorry for being long winded - here goes:

I’m in the market for my first .308 AR10; I would rather buy, but I can build if necessary. I had a plan to go LMT, but parts availability, cost, and the proprietary nature of their barrels have made me change course. All I’ve read has pointed me in the direction of Seekin’s SP10 as a top-tier option. My wife is a southpaw, so ambi controls are icing on the cake.

Thing is, I really would like a more compact format. I’m looking for a 16” barrel and collapsible stock. I wrote Seekins a while ago, but given how overloaded they currently are, I doubt they’ll be able to help, or even reply. So, on to my questions:

If the configuration I’m after can’t be had from Seekins, and I go with a stock SP10 instead (assuming I can even find one),
  • Is the buffer tube standard, and will allow me to swap for a collapsible stock (size, detents, etc.). If not, can I just swap to a different buffer tube easily, or is the size/demands of buffer such that that’s an issue? For that matter, does the SP10 use a proprietary buffer?
  • Will the stock SP10 MLok handguard allow a 16” barrel? It is supposedly a 15” length, but “measured from where?” is always the issue with that. Any hurdles to swapping for a shorter tube?
  • Swapping the barrel would just be a new DPMS-style tube and matching bolt, yes? Or are there other pitfalls?
If availability means I need to go the “Builder’s Kit” route instead, what parts on an SP10 (other than frame/handguard and small parts kit) are proprietary to the platform? I’ve built several AR15s, but this would be my first AR10 build, and I know about the lack of standards and interchangability. Anything in particular about the SP10 of which I should be aware in this regard?

Last but not least, I’ve seen some SPX rifles for sale on the second-hand market. I know these were earlier models of what became the SP10. Does anybody know what the differences are? How are they with parts interchangeability?

Any other questions I didn't know enough to know I needed to ask?

Thank you all in advance for any help or bits of wisdom (or even wry laughter -😊)!

The builders kit will take a year just fyi, regardless of what they quote.
Find a used one and you may be ok with a 16” barrel but it’d be cutting it close if you’re gonna attach a suppressor otherwise probably ok. If you get a proof talk to 360 Precision on here. Get a JP high pressure bolt because they’re headspaced for Proof barrels. I used Seekins XRay stock so not sure about the buffer tube. This is an 18” barrel fyi.

Here’s an unknown brand 16” CF barrel. You could probably pay $400 since he doesn’t know the manufacturer.

Or just by this. Fits your bill.

That's a sweet rifle you've got there! I've no intention of running a can on it, for now anyway, so it looks like a 16" would fit. Gotta get ahold of one first, though, otherwise it's all academic.

I'm trying to stay with something from the SR-25 pattern family; I like that standard, and there are more options for replacement parts. That POF Rogue has a far more proprietary stuff than I'd like. At least with an SP10, the bcg, bolt, barrel, etc. can be sourced from other makers. Maybe buffer system too (though that I don't know). It's frustratingly limiting, but I suppose that's the nature of the platform.

I see. Well piecing together is where people get frustrated when they don’t run. I have many Seekins and highly recommend them. I had them all built but only one SP10. I just followed what others already knew worked. Tubbs AR10 flat spring, KAK AR10 5.9oz buffer and rifle length buffer tube and 28” rifle gas barrel. Changing any of those parts can screw things up.

You can run a 16"

You can change to any buffer system you want.

The SP10 run a proprietary Spring but it's a standard H2 Rifle Length Buffer.

You can run any style of barrel as well, just make sure to headspace it to the existing Bolt if you have a custom barrel spun up or purchase a separate Bolt that is headspaced to the new barrel and run it in the SP10 carrier.

I currently own 3 custom SP10's and have probably built close to a dozen form thier builders kits. Anything else you want to know just ask.

Thank you very much - that's exactly what I needed to know. I appreciate it.

Looks like, as db2000 said above, Builder's Kits are even harder to get than the rifle, so my best bet is to find one and alter it to suit.

Do you have any idea about the SPX vs SP10 differences? I only ask because getting an SP10 at the moment, or anytime soon, looks to be . . . lets say, unsupportably optimistic. I have seen some second-hand SPX's for sale. I'd love to know what they improved, and if an SPX can be updated likewise.

More pieces for the build.

The SP10 is constantly undergoing improvements, the .308 hasn't changed much but they have finally updated the 6.5CM to a +2 gas and fixed a small issue with their bolts being a little on the soft side.
The above issues have been fixed for about a year now.

Other options are currently available if you're looking for something to get right now. If you want PM me and I can put something together for you I think you'll be happy with.

What upper will fit the SP10 lower, and function correctly? Mega, Stag, LMT??

Assuming the take down pins are not odd sized on the SP10.

Honestly can't give a 100% answer on that. I know for certain that the SP10 is not compatible with the LaRue or Stag.

If I were to pick one from what you've listed I would say the mega probably has the best chance. Armalite is another possibility as well.

I wish they would sell just an upper and handguard...

Board member xxxlojackxxx has one with 2 barrels (.308 and 6.5) for sale right now in the PX.

Its tempting AF.

Maybe I am thinking of something else but somewhere I read that a stag upper will work.

That’s nice man. What size scope mount did you use for that?? Looks perfect
