This thread made me go down the rabbit hole and look at a RugerMarlin 45-70 guide gun
You all suck
Hmm I may just do thatGet a 357, you’ll thank me later and so will your bank account when you have to feed it.
For around here a 45-70 won’t do anything a 357 won’t except for remove steel targets from their mounting at close range with stout loads. It’s a lot more fun to shoot, trajectory is similar and you can buy ammo for $.50-$.60/rd.
Hmm I may just do that
I just saw your buddies over at Jax Gun Repair the other day. I may ask them to see if they can find me one in their crates lol
I need to take a ride and meet up and shoot some boomsticks so I can see one of them in personThey’ve been listing some but most are Remington made ones that should be avoided like the plague.
The new Ruger guns are the shit. My 357 classic and 44 SBL shoot groups like a really good bolt gun and the fit and finish is better than anything Marlin or Remington made. I’ve got a 45-70 trapper as well that I had to have a few months back that I haven’t shot yet.

Don’t molest that barrel! lolMade the trade. Marlin model 30AW. JM stamped. Other than being zeroed, I dont think it was even used. Now to get a can on it.

Sadly, I got it with that very intention. This will replace my 300 blackout. It may get the full modern treatment eventually.Don’t molest that barrel! lol
Gorgeous rifle
Cycle it with a good gun lube a couple times. Maybe make sure the bolt is clean and free of any junk.Anybody have any pointers on slicking these things up? She cycles a little rough.
I did a Rossi m92, started by oiling and cycling it like 1-200 times. Slightly better.Anybody have any pointers on slicking these things up? She cycles a little rough.
Any Lever Action can be improved by sitting down to your favorite movie (spaghetti westerns or John Wayne movies work well) and cycle the action the whole time.
I’ve found through experience that replacing some parts and cycling the action does better than a “race ready” action job.
Parts source?I have only replaced the trigger, sear, and springs in one levergun out of several I have owned, but it made a world of difference. Cycles like butter and brought the trigger weight down from around 6 pounds to about 2 or 3. I highly recommend it.

Are 336 parts the same as this 30AW ? I looked on their site and didn't see anything 30aw specific.Ranger Point Precision.

Just get a rock tumbler and tumble your baffles with SS pins and soapy water every once in a while, that is, assuming that you get a user-serviceable can.For those that shoot suppressed, especially 45-70, is there any issue with leading in the suppressor? I shoot nothing but cast in mine and was thinking of getting a suppressor for it.
I shoot my 45-70 though a Dead Air Primal (sealed can). I cast for it but also powder coat my bullets. So far zero issues and I don't see there being any issue. I also cast 150gr 9mm hp subs and shoot those though a DA Ghost so I can take it apart and look around but no lead and no fouling of any type. For the 45-70 I've been shooting 340gr and 490gr Lyman molds but just got a 420gr MP HP mold that will probably become my main load once I find a good load. Cheap to shoot using something like 3N37 or N320 powder. For those that shoot suppressed, especially 45-70, is there any issue with leading in the suppressor? Nice! I've got a 94 in 32WS with a Lyman 21 (Climbing Ladder) on it, but need the sight is in parts (been that way since I got it) and need to figure out how to put it back together. 1923 production. Here’s another one of my favorites. Japchester 1886 takedown 45-70. I rented a .458 reamer to throat the barrel so I can load bullets over the standard 405. I also installed a reproduction Lyman 21 and an adjustable peep. It’s @MK20 ’s fault I bought it, he gave me the heads up as to its location.

Would you suggest this over a Henry X? I am still torn between these two. I can use accessories from ranger point precision to make the X more “tactical” and that whole setup would still be cheaper than what the 1895 dark is going for these days.My Marlin (Ruger) Dark 45-70. Wanted a threaded rifle and a bit more "modern". I've got a bunch of older lever guns, so wanted to play with this one. Current setup has ARC X-Low rings, Leupold FX-II 2.5x Scout scope, Timney trigger (with the OE spring), Dead Air Primal, and Emissary handbrake. Tried a red dot for a bit and the WWG Happy Trigger and loading gate. Need to slick it up a bit more (has a slight catch sometimes after you fire it, the lever gets "sticky").
Shooting cast and powder coated bullets, Lyman 490gr (457406GC) and Lee 340gr (457-340-F), and just got a new MP mold that will be 420gr HP. Most of my loads are with 3N37, but tried some N320, Titegroup, IMR4227. 3031 for "regular" loads but have been waiting on the new mold to do more than just make subsonic plinkers. Got a bunch of starline brass when they had it in stock a few months ago, so I'm good there. So far it's a hoot- and cheap to shoot!
Now I want the SBL 38/357.

I liked the Dark but one big thing for me was the height of the comb on the stock. If you are going to run a red dot or a scope, the extra height is good. Plus being able to mount a light in the front and a scope or red dot on the pic rail was a plus.Would you suggest this over a Henry X? I am still torn between these two.
