We've all thrown wrenches (um, well, I hope). Same deal on the range. I'm not saying I'll destroy a stock, but I do know I can get a bit hot headed when something I do don't work, and goes bad. Most of the time, I'll walk away and have someone else go fix it (I've learned). Sorry about the stock, but I understand the issue.

My gun my call. When my decisions to act in a particular way affect you negatively , then I have crossed a line. Just like it is your right to an opinion however if you pass a law saying I am not responsible enough to own a gun because I trashed one then THAT WOULD set me off and you WOULD look very similar to MY gun after I got done with you.

The ONLY thing that makes this "extreme" to some folks is the dollar amount. If it had been a sears roebuck .22 most would have said meh who cares. I have a very expensive anger management program. The amount of aggression I expended on that gun was huge. I'm GTG for years to come.

So in short those of you who say "I would never have done that" Good on you for having more patience than me. For those of you who think I should'nt own guns and should be locked away. Gargle my nuts!

o.k. guys lets figure this out. i'm not the brightest lightbulb but i am persistent. Is the firing pin protruding from the bolt in the pictures provided? Y/N Did brut4c at any time after the discharge push the bolt forward and cam the handle down thus cocking the firing pin back to the bolt detent notch in an attempt to remove the cartridge? Is this a lh rem 700? Was the rifle in a horizontal or a vertical orientation when hammering the cleaning rod down the barrel? while i will not ascribe to the "powder kernel in the flashhole" theory I do believe it may be possible for inertia to discharge a "sensitive" primer; i.e. Federal. If using handloads and if the rifle was horizontally oriented, I would prefer to believe a high primer combined with a slam fire (pin forward or not) was responsible. Let's figure this out and not let this thread devolve into "cool" or whatever. More facts,please.

Dude I know how the anger explosion goes. I dont remember the last 4 miles of a trip I took. The wife told me I took the wrong turn and I flipped. You would have thoguht my 02 TA was a punching bag (i loved that car to death, i got mad at someone who spit and the wind took it and the spit landed on my car). I blacked out and came to at her mothers with her crying. Felt like an ass after that. Good thing you didnt get hurt though.

You are not seeing the firing pin in that photo. I pulled the firing pin out because I thought (like you did)that was the firing pin. Its not. Its brass. The bolt never moved forward when I hit the rod. The gun was in a midway cradle with a 25lb bag of lead sitting on top of the butt stock to keep it from moving backwards. The round never left the chamber. Thats the deal. No I will not reenact it

This whole situation is messed up but we've all had moments.

My favorite moment was with a particular 89 Tempo that I had in High School. I was going for a drive to relax after a fight with the girlfriend and then a cd started skipping. I proceeded to bring my foot up and kick the shit out of the dash. The radio was pushed a couple inches into the dash, the heater/ac controls all broken, and the ash tray was broken off. The whole center of the dash was broken and bent all to hell. The cd ejected like it was supposed to and was thrown out the window. I probably could have killed myself because I was more focused on kicking the radio than driving. I don't remember even looking at the road or keeping my hands on the wheel. I don't remember much besides my foot destroying the dash. Probably should have crashed and that is why i remember this still.

Little things can do it sometimes so I can imagine how a 4000 dollar rifle would get you going. But seriously you just beat $4000 over a cinder block.

this is what i was wondering? a hard hammer blow would transfer alot of force to the tip of the dewey rod. Significantly more then the kinetic enegery released in a hammer spring, allowing the hammer to hit a firing pin I would think. Maybe this should be sent to mythbusters.

Could the seated bullet generate enough friction against the brass combined with compression factor to ignite the powder.

Remember that pressure changes everything when it comes to freezing and boiling points. A garden hose when crimped is actually boiling the water in the crimped part at atmospheric pressure. Learned that in fluid dynamics class.

I would definitely not say its not possible. I certainly would not want to test it to see.

That barrel still looks to have an attitude and seems to be cocking its eye as if to say, is that all you got betty? My diagnosis: add heat and oak tree till she squeels. Fuckn rifle deserved evey phukn thing you gave it bro!! A good therapizzest costs way more than that for a year anyhow. .

I have busted up more shit and loved every minute of it from Penn offshore reals to straight six engines to 250 yamahas, ruck saks to cell phones. Bottom line phuk wid us you get bashed. I used to love to take pics of the shit I busted and send it to the mfg of the peace of chit. In the end is saves you the heartache of repair and fucked up fixes time out of field.

Once put my hand through my gps 60 miles off, every phukr on the boat freaked, silently that is. continued on and mugged em up. Pent up aggression equals failure get it out bro..

Good job and don't look back but you should certainly show that rig to your others to keep them phukn in line!!

Seriously glad that phukr didn't bite you back, shit happens, hands heal.

I'll not say a bad word about the builder. He did his job with exactness. In fact when we could'nt get the first barrel to shoot he machined the second one for FREE. THAT is above and beyond in my book. I would have him build another in a second.

had a similar experance with a 5.56 round in a M4 upper. Pulled the upper, TOOK THE BOLT OUT and rammed a cleaning rod down the barrel and the round went off, Loud as hell but no one was injured. So it will happen with the bolt open or in my case no bolt at all. Cant answer why it went off as in this situation. But I know it is can happen.

An update to this thread. After working on another 300wm and having the same accuracy issues as the destroyed gun I changed dies. That was it. The EFFING DIES!! Not sure which or why but once that variable was eliminated it was a tack driver.

can't you create heat by rapidly compressing air? Maybe when the hammer hit the rod, the bullet compressed the air in the casing and caused the powder to ignite. Just a far fetched possible explanation.

Discovered the die problem recently. So much anger and frustration was released during the execution of the above rifle that it has not been a problem for me for several years now. It would seem that my green cell count was drasticly reduced in that single event. Now maybe I can live a normal life:)

Maaaaannn... after going back and reading this one from the beginning, there are a lot of comments that come to mind.

I've had my moments... certain pieces of reloading equipment have came awful close to to going across the room and such, and I was *very* close to doing a hammer-toss with a certain rifle after a local gunsmith dicked it up more ways than one. In the end I wound up parting out the barreled action and *giving* the stock away, rather than going postal on it.

Pipe bombs have gone off from the friction of tightening the caps heating a powder
kernel so I can see how hammering a bullet into a full case could maybe catch a
kernel between the bullet and contained case wall creating plenty of heat in the
process.
His gun, a waste for sure, but the only thing bugs me is I wasn't there to watch.

I stuck a round real good once. I was scared to do it, but beat it out with a 1/4" steel rod with a pilot hole drilled in one end, to catch on the bullet tip. Took a LOT to beat that cartridge out...

What is a safer way to handle this? I guess you could pull the barrel off, cut the casehead off and remove the powder/primer from the situation, but then what? An EZ out?

You, or anybody else I shoud say, were very lucky.

The wife of a benchrest competitor in Australia was killed whilst a stuck round was being removed in the same situation except the bolt had been removed. The round was detonated whilst attempting to remove it from the chamber, she was standing directly behind the rifle and died as a result of her injuries.
It is now part of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia Benchrest Rules as follows:
"2.3 STUCK LIVE ROUND: MANDATORY RULE
In the event of a malfunction which results in a stuck live round which
cannot be simply removed from the breech end of the barrel, the firearm is
to be made safe and removed from the range to a competent person for
repairs. Under no circumstance is an attempt to be made to remove the
round by insertion of a cleaning rod or similar object from the muzzle end
of the firearm."

Thought I explained it somewhere in the thread but I'll tell it again.

The rifle as most here can understand took over 8 months to get built into its first rendition which had a Lilja barrel. It NEVER shot better than 3/4 no matter what. I sent it to the smith who did the metal work for check up.....twice. After I thought I had exausted the variables and 18 months of tinkering I decided the barrel must be shit. Ordered krieger and six months later had in my hands the newly rebarreled gun.....for a few hours anyway. So to say this came on suddenly would be a mistake.


That still may not make sense but it is what it is.

This is why I love the internet. If on a hunting trip or just a day out shooting, I might well have responded in a similiar "field expedient" manner. Having read the accounts from Australia and the AR incident, I now know better.

EBM is correct. It is an epic tale.

As to your reaction to the discharge, over the top but WTF, you endangered no one including yourself. You took the abuse from the board with humor and grace until the guy from Maine. I've purloined "gargle my nuts" and passed it on to a couple of friends. It was an appropriate reaction to the guy's post.

I also want to know what the fix is? Anything I can think of would proably be as costly as rebarreling.
