I just walked out of a local range/shop, and I'm slightly steamed. After I dropped a piece off to their 'smith for some light work, I decided to grab a lane and run a few of my "summer" 9mms. At the register the clerk scanned the bar codes on the back of my state DL (which you have to surrender to use the lane anyway), and then tried to tell me that I had no reason for concern, as it was how they "kept track" of their customers. Excuse me? I get taking the DL, just in case you decide to make a mess and EOW out there, but I'll be damned if they need to "keep track" in such a manner of anything besides weapons purchases for state and fed purposes, especially without so much as an effin' by your leave.

Re: The range and Big Brother

A local range here does the same thing. Only difference is they make a front copy of your DL and keep it on file. I know the guy that owns the place he is my class 3 dealer and I don't feel is if he'd misused my info. But it's good to know you all has it in case something fishy started to happen in your name.

It's all fun and games until they fill the skies, Frank.

The clerk also tried to tell me that they used to do the same thing by SSN, which I'm pretty sure they've never done in the six or seven years that I've been an infrequent customer of this place.

The membership list of the Colorado Rifle Club gets updated and sent to the FBI every year.

I'm sure the FBI is trustworthy, and the rest of the government is deserving of our trust and support as well.

Re: The range and Big Brother

good god you all need to relax.

i work at a large public range and we scan drivers licences to check people in and out. i can assure you that the information is not being used for any kind of tracking( at least at my range )

we could not decipher peoples hand writing and now the computer prints legible sheets with a good start and stop times.

breath think and relax

You could also refuse entry to anyone who refused to print their name/s out in legible block capitals, too. For me, it doesn't quite wash. I don't mind them holding it as a pledge against my possible stupidity, but in temporarily surrendering my license I'm not giving them leave to examine and scan it. If they want the info so badly they can copy it down. There is a difference.

Re: The range and Big Brother

my old range took a copy of your DL numbered it on file, took your picture and laminated it to a card. Card had range name, address, phone, your name and assigned #

Re: The range and Big Brother

The EXACT reason they are barcoded now is so that places, like ranges, can quickly scan and enter information. IF you took the time to read the basic info it produces to retail location and bars you would see that it is harmless.

yep you need to buy some land and shoot under your own rules. you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. when i have 15 or 20 people coming and going at any time it really helps to have the scanners. have a good time shooting by yourself on your private land with your own rules.

A Microwave will quickly correct all things "Chipped", be it tagged from a parabolic dish w/50 bucks of junk put togeather,... or laying on a turn table, behind a cooking device door. It's a brave new world, keep up with the times it pays, in the long run.
