My wife and I are going to Texas for our anniversary and have never been. We'll be flying into DFW & staying the night there. Then the next day we'll be in San Antonio with plans to see the Alamo (my buddy told me about an old hotel nearby we needed to find) and the Riverwalk. We'll be staying in SA that night. Then it's onto Gruene which is a historic district and we'll be staying in nearby New Braunfels that night. The next day it's on to Austin where we will be staying that night. Then, the next morning it's back to DFW where we will have a couple hours before heading to the airport and flying back home.

So, what is it we have to see while we're there? We were going to spend a day at Schlitterbahn but then we found out it was going to cost us like $120 for two people plus it may not be worth it since the rivers that supply the place are running low. What are some eating holes we simply can't miss out on? I'm talking Man v Food type places that you see on TV and want to book a trip there just to eat what you see on the TV. We're big fans of BBQ and the like.

So, any tips hints or ideas?

Schlitterbahn is overrated. Go to Gruene and go catch some live Texas Country Music at Gruene Hall. If you're hungry The Gristmill next door isn't too bad. If you really have time and the weather is nice I would say float the Guadalupe River for a few hours. It's BYOB.

Fredericksburg is a good place to go if you have time. There's a lot of shops d-town the wife would like.

When your on the riverwalk eat at Dicks Last Resort if you get the chance. They have good BBQ. The theme of the place is they are rude and you get to be rude back. You will see if you go. Just make sure you don't tell your wife in advance, it is half the fun that way.

While in Austin go see the bats that live under Congress bridge the bridge (Congress ave) crosses town lake. I think it's 3.5 million bats that live and fly out from under the bridge. It's pretty cool and while you're down there there are a lot of cool shops on Congress ave and 6th street is just a street lined with open window bars and all of them will have live bands jamming out. School (UT, my alma mater) will be out so you wont have to deal with bunch of kids. The Oasis is a cool restaurant built onto the side of a cliff up on/over Lake Travis (620/2222 area) and they'll have live music too but the views are very cool. If you're really adventurous hit up Hippy Hollow. <span style="font-weight: bold">Make sure you try a Round Rock doughnut while you're there too. </span> You can get them at most gas stations and the like but you could make the quick drive up to Round Rock and get some too, either way make sure you eat at least one.

You're not the first one to mention GristMill in Greune so I think we'll hit that for sure. We're already planning to tube the Guadalupe so it's good to hear that is something we should be doing.

Ohh... I remember hearing about this place years back. I think we will hit this place up as it sounds like a pretty fun experience.

What is the name of the place that serves these doughnuts?

2. i hear the U.S. border is a great place to do some shootin' this time of year, bring extra ammo.

3. eat at a Texas roadhouse just for the novelty of it. like getting buffalo style wings in buffalo. ask if they have a pink slime special.

4. don't forget that when you are in texas look behind you, 'cause that's where chuck norris is going to be.

5. if you decide to sit and take a rest, check that the chair your in doesn't have wires plugged in.

Perfect, it's right off of I35 so we'll hit it the morning we're headed down to San Antonio from Fort Worth. Anything specific we need to get while we're there? Is that the place with the 3lb cinnamon rolls?

There is a place outside of Austin called Salt Lick. It has decent barbeque. You basically get a big stack of meat, it is BYOB but a good time.

If you want Steak then Dallas is your huckleberry. I would suggest Pappas Bros. It isn't that far from DFW. Another great one is Al Biernats. A more mad menesque one is Nick & Sams.

Lone Star Brewery and taxidermy museum. You will love it. Wife, probably not so much. But it is fun.

Alamo just to say you did it.

I *think* there used to be a really good Army Medical Museum there. I know I went to one somewhere (not expecting much) and it was amazing. I *think* that may have been in San Antonio.

Go driving out in Hill Country. Used to live in Houston. "San An-tone" was where we'd go to escape.

It's probably changed a lot, but is a neat town.

Sounds like your gonna se a lot of I35...


Are you staying near DFW airport? The first night you can always make a run over to the ft worth stockyards and go to Billybobs or see the square in FT worth.

Or head to Dallas. There's a dicks last resort there if you really wanna go and you can see where JFK was shot, deep ellum or the west end.


Just make sure you leave plenty of room for driving. It's a solid 5 hours to San Antonio from DFW.

Wacos on the way if you wanna stop by George's bar and have a Big O Beer

Also if your down in Austin may as well head to Lockhart and eat at some of the oldest BBQ joints in Tx. Salt lick over in driftwood is good but it is BYOB.

Six street in Austin is fun if you like live music.

Im not a fan of San Antonio at all so I don't have much insight into it

the old hotel in San Antonio is the Menger. It is also on Alamo Square, and their bar is where Teddy did some recruiting of Rough Riders. Walk around the lobby, and look for the older part. Seriously beautiful.
Dicks last Chance is not far from there. All of this can be reached by parking in the River Walk Mall parking garage.
The Alamo is a true shrine. Talk in whispers, take off your hat. Wait for a guide, and really appreciate the story. I have two cousins and a 4 great uncle who were in Juan Seguin's Battalion. The Crockett Hotel is behind the Alamo. Nice place to stay.
The Army Medical Museum is on Ft Sam Houston, also not far from there. Take I-37 to I-35 north (to Austin) and get off at Walters which takes you to one of the main gates. Prepare to show ID, and ask for directions to the museum. Worth it. The base is now the center for ALL US medical training, so AF and Navy are also training there. We spend three months there every winter, enjoying the warmer weather, and visiting 101st Troopers on the Ortho and Burn wards.
If you have time, go to the Imax in the Rivercenter Mall, and watch the Alamo in Imax. Pretty impressive.
PS: If you can see any show at the Majestic, GO! The theater is worth seeing, no matter what show is there. If you like that sort of stuff, there is a Mexican open air/covered mercado nearby. Ask your cabbie.
And final thought. You cannot do justice to a tour of Texas in just a couple of days. Austin has the Texas Archives, and the Texas Ranger museum is up near Ft Hood somewhere. There is also a Texas Ranger museum and bar near the Alamo, just ask. All the stuff mentioned in SanAntonio are in walking distance.

NO schlitterbahn! It's expensive & always crowded. You'll end up waiting in more lines than you will riding slides. It's just not worth it.

NO Texas Roadhouse... It's pretty much a chili's, or another chain restaurant... yuck!

The drive from DFW to San Antonio is gonna suck, just FYI. Stop at the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco. While you're in Dallas you should eat at Javiers (http://www.javiers.net/) & then head to the Uptown area for drinks.

Here's my suggestions for the southern portion of your trip, google them for more info:

Rent boats/jet skis on Canyon Lake.

Float the river (Comal or guadalupe) They might be low. We're in a drought, but the Comal usually stays full. You'll see in Gruene. BTW it's a "float" not a rafting trip... it's more of a relax & soak up sun kind of thing than adventure kind of thing.

Natural bridge caverns does an adventure tour if you like caves... The standard tour is lame though.

There's wineries all around Fredericksburg, take a tour/tasting!
Also check out Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg.

The bats are cool... While in Austin there's tons of nice restaurants & 6th street is well known for its bar/live music scene... Some really unique places there.

Ask locals where to eat & eat at the LOCAL places! (again, Texas Roadhouse is about as "authentic" as chili's or abuelos. double yuck)

Saltlick BBQ is really good & unique

Honestly the river walk in San Antonio is kind of a dump/tourist trap, I'd find somewhere else to spend my time... Just my opinion though. The Alamo is probably the most worthwhile thing in San Antonio.

Lone Star Brewery or Shiner brewery (shiner is a drive) I'd do the wineries instead, especially with the lady. Texas has some great wines.

If you want to rock climb check out Enchanted Rock... But since you're coming from Colorado it probably won't impress you... Unless you're a serious rock climber.

I could really list A LOT more (skydiving, fishing, hog hunting, Rangers game, etc. etc.) Just depends on what you're into, we've got it all. For an anniversary Fredericksburg, Austin & Gruene are your best bets, I'd look hard at them.

BTW I'm a native Texan, 8th generation. Really hope you enjoy your trip!!! I've got some close friends in San Antonio, If I can get some tips from them I'll post up.

Agreed avoid Dallas at all cost... Its a shame we cannot sell that shitty ass city to CA where it truly belongs. Jpipes list pretty much covers the necessities. Maybe pony on down to Corpus or Galveston and try for some Reds.

I touched base with the wife at lunch today to see what all she had planned in addition to the advice I've gotten from several forums and so far we're planning to get into DFW late at night so we're staying near the airport.

We get up the next morning and head to San Antonio and will stop at Round Rock Doughnuts just off of I35 since we were told he HAD to. Once in SA we plan to see the Alamo, Menger Hotel and some of the old missions and historic sights around that immediate area depending on what kind of time we have. That night we may rent some river bikes or take some sort of river walk tour of SA. I forget which one she said but something about we need to bring watersocks if we do the river bikes. That one sounds like a lot of fun to me. This is our anniversary so we'll probably choose someplace decent for dinner and I think I've got a list to select from here. Just need to decide where.

The next morning we'll get up and head to Gruene (possibly after stopping at LuLu's in SA to split the 3lb cinnamon roll I saw on Man vs Food lol) where we will check out the historic district and then do a river float (probably Guadalupe unless the Comal has more water) as opposed to Schlitterbahn that we initially wanted to do. We will eat at the GristMill sometime that day/night. We're then staying in New Braunfels that night.

The next morning we'll head to Austin. I've heard lots of good people talk about 6th street, Salt Lick, Rudy's, Art's Rib House & Amy's Ice Cream so those are in the list somewhere for this day... maybe. We'll probably check out the capital while we're there as well. We also were told to check out the bats under Congress Bridge so that may be something we do near dusk before dinner or something. We still need to book a room for this night in Austin and I plan to check out Driskill based on a tip. If it's too 'spensive we'll probably have to find some roach motel on the West side of the fancy new bridge. lol This will be our last night in TX as our flight out is the next night.

The next morning we'll get up and head to Dallas. I want to see the School Book Depository/Grassy Knoll and 6th story museum and other JFK related locations. I want to eat at Dick's while in Dallas because I've heard good things about this place for years. Sounds like a raucous atmosphere with some decent 'que. Our flight back to lovely Colorado is around 4:00 so it's likely we'll have to head to the airport shortly after getting lunch so maybe we can hit a couple quick sights before we go wheels up.

So far that's a rough outline of our itinerary. There are some meals left out and some places I'm debating on going to so we may plug those in here and there depending on what we feel like and where we are. All I know is when we travel we go out of our way to avoid chain restaurants or anything we can just eat when we're back home unless we're on a long trip somewhere.

I know that's a LOT to do in only a few days but I think we'll get a lot out of this trip and get to see most of what we want to see. I would really like to spend some time in Fredericksburg based on what I've heard but I just don't see it happening on this trip. I hope to go to Houston with a buddy for a hog hunt sooner than later so I can get some places out of the way whenever we go to that part of Texas but for now at least I feel like our tour of central TX will be pretty fun even though it will be lots of driving sprinkled throughout. The worst part will be the first morning when we make the Fort Worth to San Antonio trek but the rest of the legs will be broken up into daily segments on the way back up North.

If you watch a lot of the food channel, travel channel, and like to eat, you can go to Roadfoods.com and take the eating tour listed for central texas or iphone app "TV Diner" where they list places on TV shows man vs. food, diners/drive-ins/dives for something fun. Also, take in the TX ranger museum in waco, or Dr. Pepper museum, Duck tours in Austin, etc. Have fun.

Dallas will have the best bbq. For san antonio , you just missed fieasta in san antonio. They cleaned up ok though. Avoid the downtown flea market (market square, farmers market , el mercado), stop by the city info booth "el centro" (across from coyote ugly). Although a bit pricey on a good night I like biga on the banks, howl at the moon, or swigs. Also sams burger joint (on swing dance night) .
Austin has the steam train and sometimes a murder mystery trip

If you have any free time at night you can go hog hunting just outside of San Antonio with these guys. Have used them a couple of times and they are great!!! Was recommended them by someone on this board.

We're hitting up the Animal World & Snake Farm (from Dirty Jobs) in New Braunfels. Looks like it's only $10 per person for both of them.

Won't have time to go through any of that and I didn't take the time to fill out forms for my hog hunting rifle since it's got a few stamps. Hoping to make it out to the Houston area with a buddy for that though. Just haven't been able to finalize plans yet.

If wife needs some time to do shopping (so maybe you can get away with more guys stuff) theres a HUGE outlet mall/discount shopping center north of San Antonio on I35 I THINK. I moved away over 6 years ago and all the places Ive been kinda are starting to blend...
Someone who actually lives there still plz confirm.
Shits mad cheap there and they have a UnderArmor store- pick up some cold weather gear real cheap so next winter you can shoot more comfortably.

For nighthogs they supply everything, rifle, ammo, and night vision gear. You just show up, could even bring your wife if she likes to shoot.

If you want good bbq in Dallas before you leave, go to the Hard 8 (no it isn't a gay bar) in Coppell. It is only minutes from the DFW airport. I work at the airport and it only takes about 10-15 minutes to get there. The service is fast and excellent. If you do go there, make sure you get the pinto beans that are in a huge pot by the soda machine.

My fave is the chopped beef and the spicy sausage
I have to drive by the place to and from work most
days. When the wind is from the south the smoke is
a reminder of the good eats inside.

The Natural Bridge Caverns is pretty cool, not too far from New Braunfels followed by the The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. Ostriches pester you and there is all sorts of game you want hanging on your wall.
