Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Looks like a trip is more likely on the 6th as Little Cub's boat couldn't quite get past their monster competitors at Benderson Lake today.

They rowed like determined Phoenicians but it wasn't enough to overcome their worthy adversaries from all over the state! Still, they managed to get to the finals.

Anyway, looks like I won't be attending anymore of my daughter's high school events as her team probably won't go to regionals and didn't qualify for Nationals.

Surprising how quickly four years flies by...

Now if she makes the Alabama rowing team...

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Ill try to make it on the 6th
I dont think my SW ammo will get here in time.

I got her....

She has already been awarded 3 academic scholarships and is up for at least one more that we will find out about in the next few weeks. So far we're at about 60% covered for the total estimated costs of attending, living, etc. I am open to donations however!
laugh.gif

As to rowing, she is a lightweight rower and at present, UA ladies rowing only competes in the ladies heavy weight class (135 pounds and over in the high school division. Not sure about collegiate). Thus she will not be recruited as a rower unless she beefs up another 17 pounds! Not an easy task for her.

She is however also a skilled Coxswain and there is a place for her on the team as all the sweep boats require a capable coxswain for each.

The competition for scholarships is intense and there are only two offered for coxswains. As she was not a full time Coxswain the past two seasons, she refused to conduct false advertising to the schools she applied to.

She plans to join the team in August as a walk-on and try to earn a scholarship as a coxswain once she proves herself to them as the ass kicker I know her to be.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Hmm... is the range open on fridays?

I got an oral board for Pineallas County SO and had it for friday 18th... Thinking maybe I switch it to the 17th, then on friday I can go shoot!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

It is open on Thursday and Friday!

Good luck on your boards.

Question: Do you have to come all the way to Pinellas County for good Oral?

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Looks like I may not be able to get out there on Sunday after all. I forgot that our family will be attending the commissioning celebration (2nd Lt. U.S.Army!) of the oldest son of our good friends and neighbors this Sunday.

We've known Jorge since he attended Kindergarten with our oldest daughter. They both attended the same schools all through elementary, middle, high school and college.

I wouldn't miss this for the world.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I'm not going to make it out either. I may just go to Cecil Webb and shoot 200 tomorrow.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

QQ, I don't think I'll be able to make that. I'm going to be busy as hell making sure the yard monkeys align the shafts and install out shaft seals right. Dinner I might be able to do or you can stop by at Hendry shipyard and I can give you a grand tour of US Battleship Marlin! Haha!

Al, I'm selling it only because I want a G2 reticle. As a matter of fact I already have one coming this week. I hope the HDMR with the G2 has the same awesome glass as this one if not I'll be greatly disappointed. Let me know if you're interested I'll give you a better price.

That may be doable!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Rene says you guys all suck for not showing up!

It was actually a very nice afternoon as it wasnt busy at all. We pretty much wore out the plate on the right. It was a glorious day of steel smashing with the wife.

It was a pretty challenging day tho. I had 1.5 mills windage dialed on the .223 and had to watch pretty closely on when to hold for even more windage or hold for less. I had about .8 dialed on the .308 and still had to play the hold game a little. The wind would come up and blow a while, then totally die out, then change to blowing from behind. Rene did manage to put quite a few rounds on the plates tho, I was pretty happy for her as she hasnt been out in over a year.

It did look like the Manatee guys took a front end loader and dig the berm a little better for the 600y mark. We may be able to see our impacts a little better now if (if) we miss.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Good to hear you two had a nice time together.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Jeff, I was busy as hell this week trying to get the cutter back together so I'm sorry if we couldn't meet. Finally back in Ft. Myers though.

Nice Dale! When are we planning on shooting again?

Al, worries brother. I just received another HDMR with the G2 and I really like it. The horus might look pretty busy.

Later guys.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Everyone still down for the 20th?

Im going for sure.

My ret in my SS is canted...feeler gauges, leveled and plumed...
I kind of knew it was when it was on the AR but I tried eveything and it is confirmed.
Every so slightly canted....

Joey you got a pm

On the brightside my custom Phoenix Bolt Knob from PCR is done so Im happy.
I had them mil a knob that is 1.125" dia x 1.6"

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Went with my two sons today...
Man, I hate the way that wind swirls around inside the berms there, it was near full value and gusting 15-20. Later in the day it calmed a bit, but was still "challenging"
smile.gif
...

We brought our own steel, 12" and 6" plates at 565, and they were bitchin' that the 12" plate was too easy, and the 6" was too difficult....that's kids for ya, never fuckin' happy!

I told 'em to shutup and just enjoy being at the range. Kinda like fishing- I'm always happy just being out on the water...if I snag a few grouper, it's a bonus.

Saw a beaut of an M82A1 (.50) with the BORS. But it looked more like a USO scope, and not S&B...does USO make a scope compatible with BORS?

Anyway, got the RSO to promise the boys that he'd schedule the wind to lay down next time out...

Gotta love that place.

Al, so what prevents you from setting your rifle in a known to be square (Level/Plumb) rest or brace (Or just use the bibod! and then aligning the reticle to a plumb line? I set my scopes up this way and find them to be correctly aligned. I often use the corners of the houses across the street from me!

And yes, I have checked them for plumb!

Does not the feeler gauge method assume the body of the scope, specifically the exterior bottom flat, is perfectly square to the internal reticle? I find that to be improbable but am open to further education.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

All those methods work perfectly its the reticle itself that is canted.
I guess I can send it in and have it fixed but its not worth
the hassle for just a regular old SS. Now if it was a more
expensive scope I would have sent it back.

It doesnt really bother me because I had no problems
hitting what I was aiming at when it was on the semi.

Though I do like the way I painted the scope....

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I will be there. Like Jeff said I need some reloading done also, thank God for Fridays off!

Dale, you think I can drive to your place and you drive all the way? So that I can help you with loading the targets and not because my truck is a gas guzzler

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Want me to dig out the surefire break for you to try out?

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Dale the turbos are doing fine. 18 in the city and 22 in the back country. Manatee is just a little too far. Yeah man I'll try out the brake.

Hey nothing wrong with watching Thundercats and GI Joe on Saturday mornings!

Wait I thought its this Sunday not Saturday???

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Damn... thats getting pretty good. The Yota gets around 20 hand calculated. Yes... Sunday... My bad! Got a lot going on this weekend!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Good shooting (and bullshitting) today fella's!!!!

Damn nice breakin out of the rut and going past 600 today too!

Alan, Im glad you got your build complete! She's looking good man, and shooting good too.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Yeah, it was nice seeing yall out there. Sure was shimmery at times! Nice and dry and a head wind that largely remained true all day!

Next month, it is very likely to be a lot more "Tropical" than today's more arid setting. The impacts of our misses will be tougher to see but the heat chases off the Nancy boys! The rains can't be far off. And with them is the jungliciousness of Florida in summer!

So I hope to see you soon, in the humid, central Florida, hot as balls conditions, we love so much!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Hey bro!

Good to see you on here! We never did shoot the other two fire extinquishers on the left side.

Did I hear that you built those rifles you were shooting?

Good job at 1000 too. Hope to see you out next time to smash some steel with us!

OOh!! That's what they were!! My father and I were there and were wondering what in the world it was. Very good idea.. Reactive target without the chance of a range fire.
smile.gif

(We had the Mosins out to 565. Shot at the gong and the entire deal fell down!!)
Ren was kind enough to show me the setup he has for his steel. Going to get started building it soon.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Hey Steve... Glad to see you found your way here too! If you guys can get some AR400 or 500... you know what to do!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Sure thing! It is a cool idea to bring your own. I guess since you guys mostly commute from far away, you get to the range right around 8:30 or so to get the maximum shooting time in for the day..? Being so close I have the ability to drive out every weekend should I have the desire and the funds to do so. It never occurred to me to bring my own steel. I like the way you think sir!

In all seriousness though, how well do you think the AR500 will hold up to 300 Win Mag rounds? 1/2 inch thick sounds pretty thin but I don't have any experience in that area. How much of a beating do those .308's deal out to the steel?

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Every weekend = I wish!

I even wish I could manage to get there at 8:30! Most of the time its 10ish. The last time I went with my wife we got there around 1 and stayed till close. Which was actually kind of nice, as the place was kinda empty ( kinda how we talked before we left Alan).

With the AR500, its extremely tough stuff. The plates I have have been shot probably 300 times id say. Figure weve had them out 4 or 5 times, and each of us bring on average 150 rounds to shoot..... so the 300 times is probably on the low side. The 308 doesnt even put a dent in them. So unless your running some AP in the 300 id say your good to go.

Id do some more research on what caliber before getting wrapped around the axle with the 300....lots o' options out there!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I doubt any match round from a .300 WM is going to hurt the 3/8" plates I own at 565 yards and beyond, let alone 1/2"!

DirtDart's big plates are 1/2" and the only surface damage thus far on any of our plates is the spall off of all the layers of paint we've put on them!

Good to meet both StayFrosty and Steve yesterday.
