7 Rem Mag - 7 WSM - 7-08

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

That's alright. I have their load data. I was just hoping someone had a load that was working out well for them to perhaps save me from having to piss through a bunch of components working up loads. No worries. Thanks.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Caliber: 7WSM
Action: Surgeon 591
Barrel: 1:9 24"
Stock: T5A

Load Data:

Brass: Win
Powder: RL-22 @ 63gr
Primer: Fed 215M
Bullet: 168gr Berger VLD
Seated: 2.905 (Will fit in a AI mag)

15 rounds fired consecutively over the chrono:
Avg: 3089 fps
SD: 7 fps
ES: 21 fps
~.25 MOA

This is a max load in my gun. It is also temp sensitive above 85 degrees.

Edit: 3/21/12

I have went back and modified this load as it was a little too hot. It was killing my primer pockets in 3-4 firings. Here is the new load that has been modified.

Same Rifle/Same components
61.5gr of RL-22
168 Berger VLD

Avg Velocity: 3000fps
SD: 3fps
ES: 7fps
This is from 10 shots fired over the chrono.

Accuracy is still sub .25moa.

Due to the temp sensitivity of the RL-22 I decided to work up a H4831SC load in hopes that it would be less temp sensitive. With the RL-22 I saw a ~100fps increase in velocity from 70* to 89* in the direct sun. Also a noteable pressure increase as well was seen on my brass.

I worked up this load:

Same rifle/components as above.
62.9gr of H4831SC
3,032fps average with the 168gr VLD from a 24" barrel
ES: 12fps
SD: 5fps
Accuracy was literally 5 shots in one ragged hole at 100yds. This workup was done in ~75* temp. I am curious to see how this load reacts to 85-95* temps in direct sunlight.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

7wsm hunting round
Browning x-bolt factory rifle and 24" barrel
160 accubond
55.0 gr h4350
Cci 200
produced .441" three shot group during load development (54.5 gr was not bad either)
Still working with this one, and I would like to try a slower powder.

I have also been working some loads with the 140 partition. Has anyone obtained great accuracy with the partitions?

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Is there a good powder to use for the 7WSM that is not going to be wildly temp sensitive throughout the seasons. Here in KY we go from 100 degrees in the middle of summer to 20 degrees and colder in the winter.

Im shooting a GAP custom, Badger M2008 with Bartlein 26.5" Barrel.

What powder should I be after if I am going to use winchester brass, fed 215M primers and Hornady 162gr AMAX ?

Thanks guys!

Alot of people are using H4831SC for the alternative powder for the 7WSM. That's what I will be switching to after this fall/winter. The RL-22 load of mine was already worked up and established. Since its already fall here with temps rarely getting above 80-85 degrees, I wasn't worried about the temp sensitivity. My RL-22 load is awesome, but above 85-90 degrees it will beat the hell out of my brass and destroy primers/pockets.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

H1000 and Retumbo are great powders for 7wsm that are not as temperature sensitive. They are also slower burning, which is ideal for overbore magnums.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

For 7mm RM.

28" Benchmark 9 twist throated for 180 class bullets.

45 degrees out,7150 DA,5.6 mils at 960Y.

Winchester brass,Fed 215 primers,70.5 grains Retumbo( compressed load),176 grain Cautericio's gives 3040 fps determined from actual come ups and showed 3"s vertcal at 960Y.

Pressure signs in my SAKO TRG42 began at 71 grains with slight bolt lift resistance and slight primer flow,so work your way up slowly starting at 68 grains.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

I am sure it has been addressed but I can, find it. I need at 7rem mag load for 160 additives please
Thanks

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Rem Model 7 7-08 hunting loads please. Been shooting factory ammo and its time to reload. I have all the stuff, need some decent (not hot) loads. Most shooting less than 200 yards from a stand. Rifle seems to like 140 grain loads.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

7-08 load data:
Sorry I don't have a model 7, so take it for what is worth..

Rifle: Tikka T3 7-08
Bullet: 140gr Nosler Accubond
OAL: 2.83
Powder/Charge and approx. velocity for the T3 follow:
Varget/40.7grs/2770
IMR4895/27grs/2600
IMR4350/42grs/2600

The varget provided the best group when I started working up loads, so the second two were only used as part of the fire forming process and are light loads. The Varget data shown above provided very consistent groups all sub 1" with three shooters at 100yds.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Tried Reloader 17 behind the 162g A-Max.... My gun (Savage 10 w/ 20" bbl, 1:8.75) did not like it at all. Nothing under 1.6".

Did find that it loves Varget. Gonna fine tune a load with it.

44.0 R-15
120 TSX or NBT
R/P brass
Fed 210GM primer
OAL 2.76 for TSX
OAL 2.79 for NBT

50.0 Ramshot Big Game
120 TSX or NBT
R/P brass
Fed 210 GM primer
OAL 2.800"
3,030-3,040 out of same rifle

Either bullet will flat lay out a whitetail...

Good luck!

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Hey guys I've looked over this thread like 4 times and pretty much come up with 2 powders, which one should I try 1st?

H1000 or retumbo

24 inch barrel
7mm rem mag
Either 168 Berger hunting or 162 amax

Id like a hodgdon powder mainly because the heat we got here in Texas, plus all my hunting is done in Colorado. Haven't heard anything good about any other heat sensitive powders.

Thanks ahead of time

I've used both for my 7wsm and decided to go with H1000 because I was able to get the velocities I wanted without a compressed Retumbo load.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Has anyone used Arcomp in the 7-08 with 162s yet? Having a hard time finding load info.

Also going to be using it in a 24". Wanted to give it a shot because it meters so well.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

I have been trying the Hornady 162 A max and BTHP in my 1-9 twist 7-08. I havent had much luck, thinking of trying the sierra 175 or 180 smk next.
Any tips for the 162's ?

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Savage 10FCP with Criterion 26" 1-9 7-08 prefit barrel

FC 308 brass sized to 7-08 and neck turned for .004" diametral clearance

162amax loaded to blind mag length 2.158" to ogive, ~2.875 COAL

46.5gr H4350 - quite compressed

CCI BR2 primer

2776fps average of 5 rounds on Oehler 35. SD=6fps

NO PRESSURE!!! Reloaded the soft FC cases 6 times and primers still go in tight. 47.5gr was showing ejector marks during ladder testing.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Update on the 175 smk in the 7-08.
I wasnt able to get consistent accuracy out of the hornadys.
So today I tried the SMK and was impressed. Initial testing today gave me groups of .35 , .4, .42 moa @ 200 yds.
I am running 2700 FPS with no pressure signs.

The worst load I tried today was .75 moa. These bullets are very easy to load for.

My load is H4350
Wolf Primer
Winchester cases [ 8th firing ].
And 175 SMK jumping .02

Just a quick follow up on this. ARcomp did NOT work well in my 7-08. On low charges it was super accurate but velocity was way below what I would consider usable (2500ish). Once I cranked it up groups got horrible and velocity seemed to cap at 2600.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

7-08
Hornady 162gr BTHP Match
41.1gr of Varget
2.800" OAL
2780 fps out of my 24" Brux

Went through a lot of different powders to get here, no pressure signs on my rifle with this load. Was developed in 93 degree heat.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

What kind of fps should I get out of 7-08 loaded to 2.9 win brass 210 primers over 41gr of varget. It will be in a rock 1-9 26" barrel.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Thanks for the info guys.
Anybody here pushing the Berger 180 VLD from a Savage 7mm mag?
What powder do you like if so, COAL, how many grians, FPS?

Thanks!

Coldbore,

Nice, thanks for sharing. I'll be building a 7 SAUM with 24" barrel and gives me an idea what to expect. I plan on using 168 vlds and maybe try 180s. I figure the 168s will run with the 180s to 1K.

Dont under estimate this caliber, 168vld's will get you well past 1,000. Im gonna take the 180's to a mile, and see where we go from there.

How far do you reasonably plan to shoot deer? I shoot 1000 yard F class all the time, I know my limits at 1000 yards and I know how easy it is for a bullet to end up 20" right or left of where you thought it would be due to wind or 15 inches high or low due to DA differences. For me, 600 is the outside limit of where I'll fling one at an animal unless I'm shooting a 7mmRM with a high velocity, high BC heavy that gets 1/2 the drift.

At sea level assuming 2800FPS MV the Berger 140 VLD 52.6" drop and 1.8" per MPH of wind, if you use a 140 Accubond you get 54.2" drop and 2.0" drift. (that's a 0.1 mil difference in elevation)

At 600 yards it's 85" and 2.7" vs. 88" and 3", at at 600 both are down to about 1000ft-lb of energy, which is kind of my low threshold for hunting.

Is it worth the difference in price and the PITA VLDs can sometimes be to get them to shoot? It's not to me, the reason I used the 140 Accubond example is that's what I'm using in my new 7-08 hunting rifle.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

Thanks, where I mainly hunt it's within 200 yards, to 400 yards at the most. I was mainly wanting to see if the success stories with VLD hunting bullets held true for the 140 grain version.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

64.5 of h4831 with norma brass and 180 berger vld. Solid 1/2 moa in my AIAW and two GAP rifles same load for all three velocity is 2940-2970 depends on rifle.

Re: Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

I've had this load for a while, but haven't posted it, I just took a deer with it last weekend and thought it deserved some credit:

Weatherby Vanguard 7mm-08 after marked 22" sporter barrel (don't remember the manufacturer)

Remington brass
139gr. Hornady GMX lead-free round
CCI LRM primers (Its what I use for everything, works well)
49.5gr. RL-19
2.800 OAL

this was chrono'ed at 2760fps last I checked, its a very solid load and gave perfect expansion with the GMX round at 250 yards, shot was taken at the chest and the round was found in the lower back region of the deer in the skin, thats a lot of penetration! This is a half-MOA load and I absolutely love it, but it is very heavily compressed and I am going to switch to Reloader 17 with some Winchester LR primers.

Re: -7mm-08

Anyone have favorite loads for 7RM and 180 SMK's?

Do you notice much difference between the 175SMK's and 180SMK's?

Re: -7mm-08

I've run the 175smk and 180smk in my 284Win, NOT 7RM...

The 175s go 2825fps, the 180s go 2785.

The form factor, which is essentially a measure of how efficiently the mass of a bullet is used to maximize the weights BC potential, of the 175 is better than the 180.

Both bullets shoot well, the question becomes whether you want to trade off flatness for better drift. Inside 1000 yards, it's basically a wash, but the 175 is superior in my opinion.

If you want to trade trajectory for drift, the way to do it is by using the Berger 180 hybrid, not the 180smk.

I don't push my 284 to transonic ranges, but my understanding is the 175 does this well, and the 180smk doesn't.

I've been exceedingly pleased with the 175smk. Maybe Krieger sprinkled pixie dust on my barrel, but when loaded with the 175, it flat out doesn't give a shit what charge of what powder is in the case...or what primer is used, or how much the bullet jumps - it just shoots!

Re: -7mm-08

Thanks Turbo. I couldn't find much info on the 180SMK's except from Sierra's published BC's so I thought I'd ask.

I have also had very good results with the 175SMK's but went ahead and ordered the 180's to give them a try.

Re: -7mm-08

Here is what my current load is for my new barrel.

7mm-08
26" Rock 5r 8.5 twist

46gr 4350
Win Brass
162 amax
210m Primers
Seated 2.875 MAG LENGTH
2770fps
.4 moa groups @ 100 and did well at 500yds just around 3" 5 shot group in 25mph winds.

Tried Varget and was getting flattened primers but

44.5 gr Varget pushed the 162 to 2940fps , I went all the way down to 43 gr and was still flattening primers but the groups were ok. I have 4350 on the shelf so I am sticking with it and it is my comp rifle so I don't need any blown primers.

Re: -7mm-08

A question for those of you who use RL17. Honestly, how temp sensative is it compared to H4831sc? I have been happy with 63 grains of 4831 in the 7WSM at around 2850 but seeing 3000+ with the same amount of powder??? There has to be a downside.

Please, anyone familiar with the powder in temp extremes weigh in on this.
