I need help. Loaded up some 175 SMK with 67gr of Reloader 25. At 200yds my groups were about 1.5" up and down, and nice and centered. Moved back to 300yds, dialed up my .5 mils. Shot 2 seven inch groups. Still about 1.5" up and down, but 7" left and right. To get the center of the group dialed in for elevation I ended up with at least .8 mils from 200 to 300. Does anyone have experience with this load that might know what's happening? Have not had a chance to chrono yet, and shooting from a 24" 1:10 twist. I know that's slow for the 175's, but would it really destabilize that quickly? Alliant's website says I should be around 2888 fps.

Hey everybody! 7mm Remington Mag

I am puzzled.
First off, I've been reloading for 12 years. I do it by the book; always loaded for accuracy, and I am NOT the guy who tries to wring the most fps out of any given load. I've worked up loads for various rifles, and haven't had any surprises....until now.
My goal is to get 162gr Amax'es shooting to 1000 yards, just to smack steel and to see if I can. My rifle is a Tikka 695, 24 inch barrel, JP Ent Bennie Cooley compensator.
I ladder-loaded, in 0.5 grain increments, two different batches; one with H-4831SC and the other with H1000. Started at minimum and worked up. The H-4831SC I loaded to what is listed as max, I had zero signs of pressure, and got 2780fps (which seems to me really slow!). So I loaded more, past the max, in 0.5 grains. I am not going to tell you how many grains of H-4831SC I stopped at, but still, ZERO signs of pressure, and I got 2868fps with it.
As for the H-1000 load, I went to 70.5 grains, and got 2897.
This seems way out to lunch.....I've scoured the forums, and this seems wayyyyyy slow for BOTH loads of powder?!?! Do I have a 'slow' barrel? I checked my chrony against my .300WinMag loads to make sure it wasn't messed up, and no, they were running exactly where they should.
I want 3000fps out of this rifle, and by all accounts, with a 24" tube and either one of these powders, it should easily be attainable in a SAFE manner.
Any ideas?

Does anyone kno do 7mm rem mag subsonic loads with trail boss. I have a silencer and want subsonic rounds but can't fine any powder loads under the 1100 fps.

Is anyone using the Berger 140 VLD in a 7-08? Thinking about trying that bullet for deer hunting. Thanks!

I shoot a 7mm-08 with a 26" barrel and it does pretty well with 140VLD's

343n7np.jpg

.881 - .284 = .597

Shot this group off a bipod, prone, with no rear bag. Poor load development on my part as the average FPS was 3069, but the SD 42. ES was in the 90's.

I just loaded them into the lands and they performed. If you can find them to buy you'll be happy with how they perform.

Does anyone have a 7-08 load with H4350 for Berger 168's .005 off the lands? I am looking for an accuracy node at which to start.

I have had good luck using IMR 4350 and the Berger 140 VLD
7mm08
45.5 IMR 4350
Federal brass
BR-2 primers

45.2 and 45.8 shot as well which makes this load very consistent.

I have a 7WSM built by GAP on a Surgeon 591 short action and 24.5" Bartlein 5R.

180 gr Berger VLD
62.2 gr RL-22
Fed 215M primer (large rifle magnum)
COAL approximately 2.951
OAL to Ogive (touching) 2.241

No pressure signs at 62.2 but started to get some sticky bolt lift once I got up into low 63s.

Rifle has produced several sub-.25moa groups, and gets out to 1,000 yards with 7.2 mils of elevation at 1990 DA.

45.0 in Winchester brass. 2.917 oal. .018 off in mine. Weak shooter, good hits to 1000. Its etched in stone in my house. Amax too.

Thanks. Any info on using Varget?
I tried Varget but did not develop a load. Still have my test rounds. Pressure fast 40 or 41 as I remember. It may make a load yet, just not in my book yet.
The H4350 does seem to fit just right. Light crunch, 2650.

If you can, try some RL22. A mild 64.7 grains is getting me an average speed of 2962fps with a 162 AMAX, very accurate load in my rifle, 1-8.5 Brux barrel at 26". Your barrel may be the cause...

7-08 AI
23" Rock 8.7 twist

Winchester brass
Nosler 120 BT
49.0 of CFE-223
BR-2 primer
COAL 2.810

3220 fps w/ <.5 MOA @ 100 yards. Very slight primer flattening w/normal bolt lift.

I'm working carefully with this powder. I'm still 1/2 grain under max. load for regular 7mm-08. I found it interesting that primers were flatter at 48.5 grains. I'm thinking this is due to case case being less full. Don't really need to go any faster, but I'll probably make up some more test loads to find max load for this rig.

So far I like CFE-223. It meters perfectly through my Hornady AutoCharge (all loads double checked on Redding beam scale).

I like the idea if so.

I like the idea if so.

Only feed issue I have is when I forget to cycle the bolt all the way to the rear because the brass kicks out before the bolt reaches the rear of the action. Other than that I've put just over 1000 rounds down range with no issues.

After perusing this section, it looks like RL22/25/19 & Retumbo may be the goto powders in the 7mm Remington Magnum. I'm getting ready to rework some hunting/target loads with 162 amax/SST as well as the 160 accubond and or Sierra SBT(depends on what I have on the loading bench). I've had good luck with RL 25 in the past in a CZ 550 in this caliber, but have recently acquired a VSSF in 7mm RM as well. Thoughts? Hunting use will be deer/perhaps elk, and mainly informal LR target shooting. Thanks

Anybody try Speer 168gr. custom competitions in 7-08? Looking for a replacement for Hornady 162's, without paying for Berger's.

I've tried several different Speer bullets in my 7-08 and none of them shoot as well as Hornady or Berger. Sorry man. Best bet is probably to pony up the $ and go with Berger. Just 1 guy's opinion so take it for what you will.

Other good powders for the 7 Rem Mag.
VV N560 is good, but quite temp sensitive though. N170 works but lower speed.
Norma MRP has been very good for my rifle. URP works well too a bit less velocity though.

Does anyone have any knowledge about a Tikka 7mm rem. mag 9.5 twist factory rifle. I want to shoot a Berger 180 gr Match Grade VLD Hunting .284 180 0.659 BC. This would be for hunting at semi long range(out to 700.0) Berger says it is recommended to use a 9 twist. Im wondering if the barrel twist is fast enough? I also have a fn pbr 300wsm, I can convert into a 7wsm, but I'm not sure the length of this round with the Berger 180 will feed. If neither one of these are an option I may take a savage long action and build it off that. Any help would be appreciated. All this time searching the web in my deer stand has me wanting another project.

For a 9.5 and a 180 I'd say it's questionable depending on your elevation. I'd just run the 168s with your Tikka. At 700 yards the 168s and 180s in the 7RM are ballistic twins because the 168 starts at a higher velocity. For the FN pbr, if it will fit in the mag it will feed. Your max COAL will not change when you change from 300 WSM to 7 WSM.

For the Tikka, I use a 162 Amax over 68.5 of H1000 for approx 2850 FPS. I have rang steel out to 600 without issue. According to the G7 program should retain 1000 ft lbs at 850 yards with 21.5 moa of drop @4500 ft elevation.

One bullet I will be working up is the Nosler AB 168 Long range. BC .652 , will see how that works out.

Anybody load up the new Nosler ABLR 168's over Ramshot Magnum? I emailed Nosler last week for some info, but they have not gotten back to me. The only info on their website is for 168 CC's. Given the ABLR is much longer than the CC, I am sure loads will have to be on the lower end.

I ran some numbers through QL and the starting load of 68 gr puts me at 54,440 psi and 2880, which should mimic the factory load.

I dissected the factory 7mm mag 168 ABLR, just for the heck of it. The loaded bullet was darn close to 168. According to the website, the handpick the components , debur chamfer, work over the primer pockets , etc.

I did notice the bullet has a cannelure vs the loadable bullets. Either way they shoot sub moa in my Tikka, so I will hunt with them next week and work up loads as I gather data.

I am not gonna try to guess what the powder is, it is quite dark, short cut 62.7 grains.

thinking about building a 7-08 savage with a 24"-26" barrel and looking to shoot either the 175 sierra mk's or the 162 amax's. will probably be using h4350. what kind of velocities can i expect? i will most likely be pushing the ragged edge on pressure. really hoping i can get in the 2750 to 2800 fps range

I am reloading 140 gr. Nosler ballistic tips for my 7mm rem mag. Using IMR 4064 and have laddered it from 49 to 54 gr.
I am using the data from the Nosler site, but I noticed I dont see shooters using the IMR 4064 powder here?
Why not?
I shoot paper at 100 yards, and will move up to a heavier bullet when I move up to 200 and 300 yard targets. I will use different powder and different bullets then.

Better make different arrangements. Those speeds are not going to happen. Certainly not with any lee way for an accuracy node or window. 280 AI is where you need to be.

Also looking for load data for 2000MR and 140 vld's. I think this will make a good combo for comps in 708

Graham, I have run the 168 bergers out of my 7-08 with H4350. I ran them as hot as 2825 with 46.8 gr. Brass life sucked and blew a few primers in long strings or in the rain. Also shot some at 46.0 gr @2740 and 45.5 gr. All shot .75" or less. That was in a 25.5" Rock barrel. OAL is 2.94?". Remington R-P brass and Winchester LR primers. That is my max length in an AI mag with the spacer removed and the holes welded shut. Currently running 162 gr. Amax at 45.5 gr. @ 2710 with barrel cut to 24.5 and threaded with an APA LB brake with Winchester 7-08 cases and Win LR primers. at 2.948". She has always been a hammer and shooting better now than ever.

Sporter II , yes it is possible with the right barrel and load.

Try some Varget.... I run this combo and it works great.

For whatever it's worth... I have run Varget behind the 140's in my 7-08 and while practicing/testing loads it seemed to heat my barrel quickly. I switched to RL17 and it does not make my barrel hot as fast.

Here's a hammer for you guys with 7 RMs. I developed this as a hunting load with 180 VLDs. It runs right up there with some of the bigger 7's without the extreme powder consumption associated with the bigger cases. I wouldn't recommend running anything smaller than 180s with this load. You might get by with 168s, but it really shines with the heavies. Load details below.
