7 Rem Mag - 7 WSM - 7-08

Here's a hammer for you guys with 7 RMs. I developed this as a hunting load with 180 VLDs. It runs right up there with some of the bigger 7's without the extreme powder consumption associated with the bigger cases. I wouldn't recommend running anything smaller than 180s with this load. You might get by with 168s, but it really shines with the heavies. Load details below.

7mm RM
180 VLD seated to touch the lands
77 grains RL33
Fed 215M
Win brass
3140 fps at 60*F in my 28" Pac Nor

That's impressive velocity, and one big fooking bear! ;)

Loads for 7 Rem Mag-7 WSM-7-08

I am asking anyone... I have a Redding bushing die. Thanks, though.

And it's a good load, BTW:

My Winchester cases read between .308-.309 with a loaded round. The 7rm is relatively new to me so I have .306 and .307 bushings and am currently using the .307 and it seems to be holding the bullet tight enough to survive the trip from both the Remington mag box and the AI DBM without changing OAL nor is it setting back from recoil of other rounds while in the mag.

That’s been my experience while using 168’s...

Looking to start some load development in 7WSM with 182 Carterucio's. doing 64.9 - 66.5 grains H1000 in .2 gr. increments, starting on the low end looking for pressure signs.

Im assuming I should seat these like any other VLD? At or into the lands?

140 accubond touching lands. I was going to do a seating depth test but the first 5 did that so I pulled the rest.

You guys shooting RE33 in the 7rm...what kind of ES are you getting? I have several loads that will shoot great groups with Retumbo at 200yd, velocity around 3000 with a 26in barrel, but my ES was over 50fps which I dont want because after load development i wont shoot that close again except to confirm zero. Im gonna give up on Retumbo and try h1000 but may be interested in RE33 if it is consistent in velocity for yall.

Really frustrating I have sub inch groups at 200 yards but spreads of 50-70fps. I have never had this kind of trouble with any other rifle. Saw this with a shooting chrony and a magnetospeed.

7mm Rem Mag
10/21/2014

Current load is for a Rem 700 Long Range, 26" BBL 9.25 twist, B&C M40 stock.

Win brass

CCI250 primers

Berger 168 VLDS .080 off the lands

68.6 grains Retumbo @2820 fps

Load is pretty mild but I'm getting pressure signs with factory ammo and with reloads around 69.5 grains when I was only jumping .010.

Yet again.

The beauty of a 7mmRemmie on a 700 in OEM guise,is the relationship of throat,twist and COAL latitude.

My elevation is 600' ASL, and I developed this load in August 100F. Maybe the occasional extractor swipe, but that's it. I even tried tweaking it a few months ago, going .3 gr and .6 gr below as well as .3 and .6 gr above. It did not improve. As I said before, two rifles, same length and contour, each shot exactly the same load the absolute best.

Recently had the pleasure of tuning a heavy bench rest gun for a friend . If anyone reading this is interested
in seeing a serious piece of hardware , have a look on you tube for ' March 80 x " .

EDIT : the owner made the vid , was a 300 WM , now has a 7 RM barrel fitted .

Load details ;
Norma brass , oal trimmed to uniform case length
necks lightly skimmed to take off high spots
Federal GMM primers
62.9 to 63.1 grains of a recent lot of H4831 sc ( AR 2213 in Aus )
Berger 180 Hybrids straight out of the box ( would benefit from trimming and pointing )
seated 8 to 15 thou off the lands ( shot better than jammed , or longer jump every time )
Velocity is around 2970 , shot in the 0,1 range at 200 meters ( 220 yards )

Load has been replicated in standard Tikka Varmint , with accuracy in the 0.3 range at 100 off Atlas bipod ,

From what I've seen it is impossible in a 7 Rem Mag. I hate using that word, but it seems to fit, after some testing. To get that bullet to that speed I'm gonna say you need a 7-300 or maybe a 7 STW.

After 170 or so rounds down the tube I revised my load as follows with excellent results:

Nosler brass;
CCI LRM;
Berger 180 VLD Hunt;
.010 off of the lands;
64.8 grains H4831SC;

2900 fps;
.1s & .2s groups @ 100 yards.

Anybody have 7mm-08 data for the 150g Berger. Classic Hunter? I have Varget, H4350, and RL-17 on hand. 22.5" CBI barrel.

Rifle shoots 5x 160 SGK's into 0.3-0.4", 162 Amax a little better. Looking for a long range hunting load.

I am new to this site.......and new to 7mm Rem Mag shooting. I bought a Sako A-7M and so far, it shoots very consistent .5 MOA groups. For a load I am shooting 180 gr Berger VLD Target Hybrids at 2791 (7FPS SD).

I have a few questions about brass preparation:

1) Thoughts on FL sizing?
2) Thoughts on annealing belted mag brass?
3) What is the velocity trade-off when considering barrel burn-out, e.g., throat erosion?
4) Since my .308 really loses effectivness past 1K, I bought this Sako rifle for between 1 and 1.5K. Does anyone know of any good videos on reading wind and mirage? Other sources?

Thanks,

Jon Couch

Took the 7-08 out this morning to start a ladder test with the Flat Line 152 bullets. I started with RamShot BigGame and Win748 per Dans suggestion. After a ladder test well above recomended max given using quickload I found a very exciting and interesting node at 3006fps with the Win748 powder. The following is the top ladder test rounds in that node. Next will be group tests to see if these are just fast or if they will shoot.

7-08 24" rock creek 8.7-1

45.1 - 3006 fps
45.4 - 3006 fps
45.7 - 3003 fps and the very first sign of pressure. Slight sign of ejector swipe

I'm more than happy to have made it to 3000 fps as it really gives this rifle some legs.
I'll be back in a week with updates when I get the chance to fire for groups and group SD and ES numbers.

64gr 2900fps and groups 3/8"
64.5 2945fps and groups at 3/8"
65gr 2980 fps and groups right at 1/4"
No pressure signs at all with 7828 and I will work 65.5, 66, and 66.5.

With the accuracy I am seeing I will settle on the 66gr R26 load unless the higher 7828 impresses. I can't see any reason to ouch the gun harder then 3k with a 180

how did this load end up working out for you? looking to load up some 180 eld-ms in my 24" with a can, so hoping to get within 20 fps of what you listed. so just over 3000 fps. How has the 180 eld trued out as far as BC goes?

I am now running 66.5 of R26. The barrel now has about 200 rounds down it and is currently getting 3030fps, single digit sd’s, brass growth is negligible and accuracy is still amazing. I have a buddy running the same load in his 24” Krieger 7 WSM and he is averaging 3015 FPS.

5rds at 200 yds and I’m no sniper.

5rds at 200yds. The one out was first round clean bore

nice. I didn't get quite that velocity with mine. I have a 24" barrel as well on a short action. with the 180 eld-m and RL26 I got: 66.0g - 2934, 67.0g - 2980, and 68.0g - 3035. the 67.0 was the best group. I might try 67.0, 67.3, 67.6 on my next try, and try and stretch it out some and see if they are still stable at distance. I think my barrel is only a 1:9 twist

Started load development/testing for my new 7mm Rem Mag last weekend. My rifle is built on a trued Rem 700 action with a Rock Creek barrel and Fat Bastard muzzle brake. Barrel is an 8 twist and finished at 26 inches (not including brake).

71.5 gr. H1000

Need a good starter point fir a 7mm 168ELD-M out of a factory sendero 9.25 twist barrel will be using ince fired hornady brass to start

With a good shoulder angle and sufficient shoulder surface area combined with using bushing dies and no expander ball case length is not going to change much.

Anyone have any data on 175 ELD-X's in a 7mm RM?

I guess I am the only one so far.

Tried some RL 22 today in my Remington 700 Long Range, 7mm RM, 26" barrel, Hellfire brake. Pretty disappointed with the speed but after looking through this thread again, it looks like I can go up a fair amount on powder.

60.5 gr RL22
Hornady virgin brass
.020 off the lands
Rem 9 1/2 primers
175 ELD-X
2707 fps

So I gave up on RL 22. I could get some speed but accuracy was pretty bad.

Moved on to RL 26.

66.0 gr RL 26
Hornady brass
touching lands
CCI 250 primers
175 ELD-X
2930 fps

Still not getting great 100 yard groups but ok. Shot a 4" group at 600 yds with it though so I can live with that. I am sure the 9.25" twist factory barrel is holding me back on the heavier bullets. That being said.... I loaded up some 180 gr ELD-M test loads today to see if I can prove that point and justify a rebarrell.

New to Reloading 7mm mag, buddy wants to reload with me for his gun, but not new to Reloading. After reading through most of these posts, is h1000 not a bit hit for the 7mm? Found a smoking deal for an 8#er and was going to hook my buddy up with it, but not seeing a lot of love for it. His gun is an older Winchester 70, stock. He’s wanting to be able to push out for elk to 600 yards and bought some 175 accubonds for our first ladder. Are we going the right direction or should we go a different direction! Thanks in advance.

When you put ".047" headspace", does that mean .047 of bullet jump to the lands?

Try downloading the Sierra app on your phone. I have an iPhone and it works great.
Pick the caliber, then bullet (limited to Sierra bullets though). Use the slider on the bottom for your desired velocity.

This topic is getting a little stale.
I'm looking for data, 7WSM + 180 Berger H-VLD
POWDERS OF RL25 or H1000
Surgeon Scalpel 26" Kreiger 1:9 twist
I am looking for velocities of 2900 fps +/- 50 fps.
Thanks - WARDOG

Is anyone using Lapua 7mm-08 brass, if so could you give me a reading of your necks with a bullet seated. I just want to compare it to mine.

thanks in advance.
