Hi guys, I wanted to take the time to share a new rail option for the AR15/M4 that I've had the opportunity to test out over the last couple months. First off for full disclosure purposes, I'm in no way affiliated with Geissele Automatics, nor am I receiving any compensation for the opinions I express about their products.

<span style="font-size: 14pt"><span style="font-weight: bold">Origins:</span></span> It's important to start off with why/who/what these rails were originally designed for, which was to meet a contract requested by an element of the DoD for a HK416 replacement rail. This is important to note because the SMR's construction, design, and quite frankly bomb proof nature strongly reflect the original end user's requirements for these rails.

<span style="font-size: 14pt"><span style="font-weight: bold">What makes this rail different from others out there?</span></span>

** Rock solid lock up: 2.25" length of bearing surface on the bbl nut that the rail centers on and grips. A stock barrel nut has a much shorter gripping surface to support the cantilever loads of a 15" rail. Ultimately the much more robust barrel nut leads to greater yields in terms of rigidity, heat dissipation, and increased accuracy.

** Ease of installation: no indexing of the barrel nut is needed, ability to get a true torque when tightening the barrel nut.

** Modularity: broad flexibility where accessory rails can be mounted

** Ease of mounting accy rails: two screws and your done, no loose nuts to fool around with by trying to get them lined up properly. Also the Shear lugs on the accy rails take any side loading, not bolts

** Mission flexibility: switch rails with different set ups or lengths in just a minute or so. The SMR handguard can be removed in seconds with the removal of two bolts then returned/indexed right back to where it was very quickly

** Anti rotation: In terms of anti rotation, the SMR's design truly shines. It's bombproof!

** Ergonomics: It feels excellent in your hands, and unlike pretty much any traditional railed handguard.

** No expensive or hard to find special barrel nut tool, GA already includes the barrel nut wrench needed for the job.

** Backed by Geissele Automatic's very highly regarded customer service/warranty.

<span style="font-size: 14pt"><span style="font-weight: bold">Options:</span> </span>

Variants: Currently the SMR is being offered in the MK1 variant, however within the next cpl. weeks, a MK2 variant of the SMR should be available which uses the same barrel nut system as the MK1, but the rail is flat sided and it uses slide nuts instead of rail inserts to hold the accessory rails on. This is just a more cost friendly option for those who either can't afford, or don't need the extra qualities in the MK1 variant.

Colors: Currently only black and sand ano

Lengths: Currently only 13", and 15" models (other lengths are scheduled to hit the market in the future)

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">Rail Specs:</span></span>

<span style="font-weight: bold">Weight: </span>

13" = 18.4oz

15" = 20.2oz

Above totals include the weight of the handguard, Geissele bbl nut and cross bolts, but are subtracting the weight of the stock bbl nut. Accy rails are.82 and .46 oz

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">Installation:</span></span>

Geissele+Rail+System.jpg

<span style="font-weight: bold">Quickie install instructions by Mr. Geissele:</span>

Here are quickie installation instructions:

*Remove existing hand guard, flash hider, gas block and stock barrel nut.

*Grease receiver threads with good quality grease or anti seize. Make sure the FACE of the barrel extension is greased where the Geissele bbl nut will tighten down onto

*Install Geissele bbl nut. Use supplied combo pin wrench and torque to 50 ft-lb

*Install low profile gas block and proper gas tube. (no indexing of the barrel nut is needed)

*Slide SMR onto barrel nut. Be careful. There is only .001” of clearance and the rail must be aligned to have the center of the barrel in the center of the rail before slipping it on the bbl nut. I put my fingers at the top of the rail near the muzzle and eyeball alignment to the barrel, then wiggle the rail back and forth until it starts. NO FORCING.

*Once the rail is on the two clamp bolts are installed. Note they only tighten halfway into the threads before getting stiff. There are screw locking inserts that the threads go into and the bolts must be cranked down the rest of the way. Do not tighten fully.

*Now the rail must be indexed to the receiver rail. Take a scope mount and bridge the receiver and rail. Semi tighten the scope mount to bring the SMR into rotational alignment with the receiver rail. (I don’t recommend using a level to align the two components)

*Tighten the two clamp bolts to 10 ft lbs with a 3/8” 12 point socket. Note the cross in the center of the bolt head is designed to use the lug of the weapon bolt to loosen or tighten the clamp bolt in the field.

*Screw the two small nylon tipped setscrews against the receiver. This makes the whole set up bombproof for anti rotation.

*Installation is complete

It is not recommended to loctite the screws that hold the accessory rails on, however if this is a semi-permanent install of the accessory rail, purple #222 loctite can be used (no blue or red)

The installation of these rails is extremely straight forward, and those who have installed other FF rails before should have no problems performing this task quite quickly.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

<span style="font-size: 14pt"><span style="font-weight: bold">SMRs in action.....</span></span>

Since I received a 13", and 15" SMR I decided to go in quite opposite ways with each respective rail/build.

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">Build 1/ 15" SMR/ SPR 18":</span></span> I figured a 15" FF rail would go perfect with a tack driving 18" match SS barrel in order to create a SPR, thus that is what I decided to do. I believe this rail makes an excellent one for a true precision oriented AR like a Recce or SPR type due to it's increased rigidity, heat dissipation, and ultimately accuracy yielded by the much more robust GA barrel nut design. I also believe a 15" rail really allows you to put that bipod close to the barrel, which I find extremely advantageous for prone/precision shooting.

Initial break in groups...match ammo wasn't used for these, as they were conducted primarily for initial function checking.

Directly after those groups were fired it was time to take the training wheels off, and send some deep.

If your in the market for a FF rail for a precision AR, I think the SMR at least deserves your consideration as I'm really enjoying it in that role currently, and really couldn't ask anything more from a rail in this role, than the SMR already delivers.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

I don't care for the integrated top rail, other than that, looks like a nice piece. Good review!

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Geissele makes great triggers, From what this rail looks like it will be a winner. Ill save my pennies and perhaps use this on my next build.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Looks Good Thanks for the review. any idea on when the other sizes will be out on a rough est? might use one on that SBR build i was telling you about.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Bill makes a fantastic product. It's also awesome that he tends to pick up the phone or email you himself when you encounter any technical problems.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Initial impressions...

Looks almost like an adaptation of LMT's MRP/MWS barrel lock up design to a rail system. I like it.

And, uh, a Geissele barrel? You can't drop a little nugget like that and hold out the details!

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Nice
Thats alot easier than getting another URX 3.

I think I will get one in the future.

Free

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

I think I want one of these for my HK MR556 when they become available

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

I've shot 10" and 16" HK's, and the 10" almost made me write off the whole 416 deal, until I shot the 16", which is much more controllable, but needs a longer handguard.

That will be a great addition to the HK blasters if they market it.

I'm still a DI nazi, and I like how this one blends in with the contour of the upper, at least in the pics.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Great looking rail. Geissele sure puts out a purdy product! It'll be interesting to hear feedback from end users.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Thanks guys for the comments, and I'll try my best to answer any questions that may arise, and for those that I can't...I'll pass them along directly to GA.

<span style="font-weight: bold">OldGuardShooter</span>....I'm not sure on which lengths will be released, but I do know that some are in the works, and I'll certainly ask GA about that, and report back asap.

<span style="font-weight: bold">mkollman74</span>....When I asked GA several weeks back (7/12) about avail./price on these, I received the following reply...

" Prices are as follows:

15" Black are $375

13" Black are $345

13" sand are $370

Just call into the shop and ask for Ashley or Barb. They will take your order over the phone."

They aren't yet on the GA site apparently, but you can still order them direct. Also since that time, I have seen a number of places already show them in stock...Rainier, SWFA, and RogTac off the top of my head.

<span style="font-weight: bold">RD62</span>....I'd agree for one reason or another that the SMR has some MRP qualities about it. The cross bolts, and increased surface area for capturing the barrel are the two things that remind me most of a MRP/MWS chassis. I honestly can't report any real negatives in my initial impressions after a cpl. months.

I can see how some people will complain over the few extra ozs. (mainly in the barrel nut) of the SMR, but as noted above...these rails at least in their current configuration were designed for some serious hard use. For those who chase every single ounce at the expense of either accuracy, strength, or both...this most likely isn't the rail for you.

The only other thing I can think of is being addressed in the MK2 versions, but that is the relatively high price tag on the SMRs...albeit very justified in my book due to the overwhelming construction, materials, and fit/finish on these rails. For the budget minded...this most likely isn't the rail for you, however the MK2 very well may be.

The barrel is a real specimen:)

Yes it is. Can you share any more info on it? Like, maker of the blank? Availability?

Also, thanks for the detailed pics. Your builds look great! I might go ahead and pick up an 15" rail for a planned build.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

LRRPF52....I ask GA your question, and will update you as soon as I receive a reply.

468shot....Thanks for the kind words brother. I wish I could help out more with those details you requested, but my own knowledge of them stops at being "in house" Geissele barrels, and I haven't really pushed for specifics even though I'm extremely curious myself. When/If I know....you'll know:)

Here's the reply I received in regards to future lengths, and HK availability from GA..

"Essentially we will make any length needed as long as its not a one off. I am pretty sure we have HK in stock. We are running HKs right now and will not be back on the M4 for awhile while we fulfill DOD stuff."

So for those wanting the HK version...I'd suggest calling Geissele directly to order one.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

trident1982,

No worries, thanks for the pics. I didn't know Geissele was doing barrels in house, so it really caught my attention. I will try to get in contact with them soon and find out some specifics.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Just to clarify a bit further since I initially thought the same thing, but "in house" is just referring to barrels bought in order to have on hand for rifles built "in house" by GA.

I thought at first too that GA was making barrels in house, and that prospect had me very excited.

FWIW...It had yellow netting when NIB, and IIrc a blue thread/crowd protector.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

+1 Trident.

Good pics, no b.s.

Geissele is good stuff, this shows some depth, in addition to their triggers.

Looks like it was made just for that KAC lower/Vltor upper.

Don't laugh, I'm liking that BAC 1.5 too. Sweet rig.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Trident,

Are they going to be making these for SR-25 pattern rifles?

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Trident does the handguard actually go over the receiver like it looks in the picture ?

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

997/2man..thanks for the kind words pal, and I agree that the MUR goes really well with the SMR. I wish more folks made upper receivers avail. like Vltor or BCM.

krm375...great question, and one that I will ask directly to GA. To me this design is especially suited for the SR25 type rifle with it's increased recoil, and overall mass.

sithlord...that's correct, and that is one of the most unique aspects to this rail.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Boondocker....krm375 Good news, I was told eventually GA would have AR10 rails. No time frame yet though as I imagine it will be some time.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Hey guys, just wanted to update those who are interested in these rails with a few more things....

1.) I've heard plans for 11" SMR rails in about 7-8weeks...I really hope this happens, as this will make one helluva SBR rail.

2.) I received a MK2 model last week and got some time to go out and do some shooting with it, and then really examine it well in order to see the differences between it and the MK1 model.

The video should be able to explain or clarify the MK1 vs. MK2 topic better than I can via typing, but I'm happy to answer any questions that one might have after watching it.

MK1 is black....MK2 is Sand

BERTMAN....GA on 8/10 said the MK2 would be $270, however I'm not completely sure about the prices on these.

eta...thanks Redmanss

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

I think I just found the rail for my wifes new rifle!!! 15" for sure. I was just about to buy a URX 3.1 but this is going to be the one to buy. Time to sort Mk1 or Mk2 now........

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Just got off the phone with geissele and was told a minimum of 8 months before we would see a 308 version

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Wow, those look very nice

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

That thing looks great.
And that's how it starts ~ one part turning into ANOTHER gun ,,, dammit!

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

By god. A 15" will go great on my 18" build.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

I agree the 15" SMR goes great with a 18" barrel. Perfect rail for a SPR imho.

Here are some side by side pics showing the differences b/t the MK1 vs. MK2

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

What is the id of the portion that wraps around the sides of the upper receiver? I have a Black Rain Gen 2 upper, I need to make sure their will be no clearance issues.

Thanks again for answering all our questions.

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

No problem, and the best I can gather in regards to your requested measurement is 1.3585"

Re: Geissele Automatic's Super Modular Rail (SMR)

Oh thats plenty of room. Once again Thank you! I got 1.199 on my Upper from Black Rain.

Lastly do you know far far backward the sides go relative to the rail up top?

Ive got 0.361 from where my top rail ends to where the ejection port pin hole begins.

Just to make what I was saying a little more clear, and incase anyone has a black rain and needed to know as well.
