I was reading a good article about the 6.5's written by Zak Smith. In the article it discussed blowing primers in a AIAW in a .260 The article explained this was a problem for the military design of the AI. While the author seemed to work around the problem there was mention of not being able to run full power loads.

I am planning on a AIAE in .260, is this something to consider or rethink?

This is all new to me thanks

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

The primers being blown was for the 6.5x47 Lapua because it uses a small rifle primer. The 260 in an AI is problem free

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

As i understand it, he only had issues with remington brass. Lapua was working correctly, also with hot loads.

I believe lapua now makes .260 brass, so you wont have to form it from 243 or 308.

Not sure on the pierced primers, but i assume it's not the cartridge that is the problem. A .308 will probably do the same.

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

You have to be a little cautious when doing load development with the 6.5mm calibers because of the larger firing pin hole, but overall we've sent out a lot of .260s that are problem free. If you're trying to load a .260 to be a 6.5x284 lite I wouldn't recommend an AI.. however you can still get a very decent .260 load.

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

Not the 260, but I only shoot 243 in my AIs, never had an issue. I use Lapua brass and have got other pressure signs during load development but never piercing primers, maybe a little primer flow, but I don't sweat it.

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

Only problem with my AE MKIII .260 is work and grad school keep me from shooting it.

I've ran 140 A-maxes above 2,900 fps in mine. Bullet 0.020" off lands with Lapua brass, CCI BR-2, H4350. Never hit pressure either.

26" AINA Bartlein 5R barrel 1:8.2" twist chambered by Dave Tooley.

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

I'm on my second AINA 260 barrel. No problems. The second barrel shoots the same loads as well as the first.

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

Not an exact AI gun by my Badger M2008 action with the .260 Rem. barrel on it and I've also got a .308win. barrel fitted up to the same action.

I haven't had any problems with primers/loads with the .260 Rem. Got a few hundred rounds on it now with no issues.

Re: AIAE in .260 any problems ?

I blew enough primers with my 6.5x47 barrel on my AW to stop using the barrel in 30 rounds. But I have had zero issues with a .243 barrel or .260 barrel, even when using some VERY hot loads.

But isn't it a known problem with the Lapua because of the small rifle primer?
