Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Hey guys, how many of yall go out there? I'm a 4th gen manatee county resident (parrish) and I have only been once but it was years ago. Me and my shooting buddy and my wife usually go to her ranch up in pasco county, but no it is hunting season and we are trying to keep the woods a little quiet. Me and my buddy were thinking about coming out sometime. Probably in a few weekends or so. How does it work with the 1000 yard range? I have a yamaha rhino, can I bring that to tote targets and people back and forth? or do you have to walk it or drive with a normal truck? Thanks for the help guys and maybe i will see some of yall sometime!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

They have carts you can use or you can drive your own truck if you wish. They used to have a few kabotas out there too but they disappeared for whatever reason. To shoot on the 1,000 yard range you do have to pay a little more but that is because they are assuming you will be using the carts to go up and back.

Not really too strict from what I have found. They do take safety seriously (obviously) but you can pretty much do whatever. Some guys even take out fire extinguishers and shoot at on rare occasions, lots of guys take their own steel targets out because the steel they have out there gets pretty abused (people try to shoot the posts holding them etc.)

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

yes they have three golf carts to run out and back.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Oh man it's going to be nice down there manana!

Wish I could join you all!

Dale,

My 175 SMK/178 HPBT or AMAX load is 45 grains of Varget in Hornady, Winchester, RP or BHA brass. In LC, FC or Lapua, I step it down a couple tenths to 44.8. All of these are when I load with the Chargemaster.

When I load with the Dillon dispenser (Volume loading that takes a third of the time!) I set the load under each to account for the occasional over charge which can be as much as .3 grains. Thus, while I'll be throwing an average charge of 44.8 grains I will get the occasional 45.1 or 44.5. These are extreme variances though as most typically the spread is .1 grains and this is borne out by weighing random samples before I seat the bullet. I find that most typically, the load will be within .1 grain and feel in no case that these are not plenty accurate loads for what we are doing out there in the steel smashing!

I likewise set my Dillon dispenser lower for the 168 and 155 grain loads.

When precisely weighing however I have settled on 46 grains of Varg for the 168s (Nosler, Sierra, Hornady [HPBT or AMAX]) and 47.8 Grains of Varg. for the 155s.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Well, I will see you out there bright and early. Will you be toward the 565 benches? I will be shooting at some paper to get a zero then ill be able to shoot some steel at 565 hopefully.

It was such a nice day today hopefully it will be that way tomorrow.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Man it was nice out there today. I shot like crud but overall it was fun. I need more seat time but that's a good excuse to get out and shoot some more!!

Lee, it was good meeting you. Thanks for the help and everything!

Man the range masters were out to yell at just about everyone today...

Do tell!

I'll bet every muzzle sweeping, "Shooter" watching, CounterSniper was out there on the first cool morning of the fall!

Lots of stupid stuff going on?

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I got yelled at twice by the fat one. He told me i couldn't put my steel where the other RO told me to put it...

Then i used the wrong golf cart...

I am just a fuckin hoooooodlum!

It was the same way for my father and I as well as the others further down. My father wasn't even on the line and he got yelled at for not having eye protection ( I could understand it if he was shooting.. He was behind the red line! Then I get yelled at for not dropping my magazine when the range was cold and my magazine was sitting on the table.... LOL

They really need to have written rules that EVERYONE should abide by.. The rules differing for each RO isn't cool... One says yeah this is fine and another has a fit about it, I think it would benefit everyone to follow the same rules but I guess that would make too much sense.... They yell first and ask later... I can see from a safety point of view why that's needed but a couple of them seem to enjoy exerting a bit of authority if you ask me..

Speaking of safety... Did you hear about the fella that had a stuck case in his .338 last week? Apparently he used a brass rod to knock it out and forgot to remove the rod when he went for his next shot.............. I'm thinking that's kind of why they have been a tad bit more strict, but that's just speculation on my part.

<--- Raises hand... done that before LOL. I like how they reserve them for the match and dont bother to tell anyone or put a sign on it.

Oh well... Im glad I didnt go then... Sometimes I cant control my mouth when ignorance starts heading my way.

Glad you guys had a day of shooting tho. Ill try and catch up the next time out!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Are you shitting me? There was a wiry European dude with a .338 who was shooting right next to me and Ren last Sunday. He didn't have a calamity while we were there. We left around 4:00 but he was still there.

Was there a kaboom?

I was there a couple weeks ago when some douche with an AK47 and a crappo magazine kept sweeping the line every time his piece-o would jam and his stripper/biker girlfriend and he would try to clear it.

Howard (The big guy) was working the line both days. I think he's getting his fill of bone brains on the public line!

You two guys excluded of course!

I didn't hear of anything too major happening, only that the guy pretty much shit himself when it went down... Stories like that make me wary about who gets the table next to mine at the range!!!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

why are you guys letting this thread drop so far down???

if you guys go out this weekend have fun. I'll be thinking of you while at K&M!!!

you can watch for my finish location once the results are posted - just start at the bottom and you won't have to read very far!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I have been working the last 12 straight days non stop at work and I am still 1-2 weeks behind. Also still need to pour the concrete for the pool-table support so i can screw the rest of the deck boards down and get it out of my garage. But wait there's more still have to reinstall the soffit and paint the back two sides of the house(All because of a lightening strike, wish it would of just hit the AC unit)

Then I have load some ammo, but none of my cases are prepped.SO we will see if I make it out again by the end of this year.

what's the back look like?

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

i assume you are asking about the mounting system as the back of the target looks the same as the front.

That little beast ain't about to tumble over!

Very tempting offer on the trip up to K&M on the 8th O.W. A few people there I want to meet and I'm getting more and more used to 8 hour drives!

Just got back from a weekend in Chattanooga visiting my Little Cub and the Alabama Crew team competing in the Head of The Hootch competition. Lots of fun and great rowing.

And a very loooong drive!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I made it to crestview in 5:50. Range in 6:30.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

5-6 hours is a magical window of alrightness in road travel!

Tuscaloosa is 10 God damned hours! Chattanooga was 8.5! Just a little too long. Both pretty easy on the eyes though.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Id like to go, but I think were going to be booked up for the weekend.

I cant even find time to load the 50 peices of Hornady brass that have been sitting prepped on the reloading bench for the better part of a week now.

Yeah.. I feel so much safer now that we sold all of our dirty old guns at the gun show! I picked up a wrist rocket that might make it to 100 with the right load development.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

you guys are smarter than me. I donated my only gun...

QQ K&M? 08 DEC????

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

OW,

Sorry I can't commit to that weekend just yet as I'm buried with work right now and expect to be for at least the next three weeks. I'll have a better handle in another two weeks though obviously that is fuck all for any real planning.

Frankly, I rather hoped for an entirely different world view by this time as the week began...Now it feels like the smartest thing for me to do is bust my ass, save my money and watch my back...

I appreciate the offer but if it's a scheduled event slot we're talking about I can't commit just yet.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

i understand.

Team match in Feb also.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I'm waiting on my last extremely slow response from ATK which handles weaver's CS (rather poorly)and then I'll be able to send my scope off for repair. I'd come out if I had more than just my AR but my 700 is in Iowa. I'll let you guys know when I'm back in action.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I can make 12/2 as well and very much hope you all can make it as well. It's been too long since the last time!
