Where are you located at? I have shot matches with this guy without ever actually practicing with him prior to the match and have had pretty good luck. He is also from SC Kansas and he might be up for it.
If He is wants to do the ETM, you better save a little room in you box for a bottle of whiskey, he is one of my buddies and I don't want him drinking my stash.

I am hoping it is a random assortment of different camo patterns or none of my gear will match for sure.

Also, is it equipped with a coffee maker?

I am from the Pittsburgh, PA area. We better make it two bottles of whiskey...don't want him drinking mine either!

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

How strict is the eye protection rule enforced? Or is that a disclaimer for legal purposes. I don't usually shoot with glasses with a bolt gun.

In the ETM class you are required to camp out overnite, I would say most will likely have camping gear in their box.

I was also wondering about this. Last year this was a very loose guideline.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Don't stress so much about the eye protection, just make sure you have some with you. You will be fine with in your pocket or pack.

Guys the thickness of the wood for box will probably be either 3/8 or 1/2 inch plywood. I really don't think a 1/4 of an inch will make a difference.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Most people last year were running Eberlestocks with the scabbards. I would think that would be a better configuration then the rifle cover.

You'd be surprised. This + basic backpack is probably a better use of weight savings vs the Eberlestocks packs.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Eberlestock packs are the way to go. I ran the LowDrag last year, it was a perfect pack for that match.

Since ETM requires more to be carried I will be running a WarHammer this time around.

Having walked countless miles with a long gun I can tell you that the ability to securely carry the rifle close to your spine is a huge advantage especially on hilly terrain.

I have to disagree on the choice of carry. I use an Eberlestock but do not like the ones with the scabbard. I prefer to keep my pack close to my body and carry my rifle slung in the front close to my body. It is a more even load distribution to me. But what do I know, different strokes for different folks. Regardless this Tab Gear Rifle Cover is a great piece of kit.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

I had a couple Eberlestock packs, and while they are built well, I dont care for them in this situation. I would rather run a bigger pack like a Kifaru Pointman and then just sling my rifle. I didnt think I was going to cover it, but that cover does look good. I'll have to think about it.

Bill

As a side note, I never felt that I could get the pack strapped tight enough with the rifle in or out of it to not make it feel like every step I took it shifted left and right on my back. Drove me nuts...

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

I plan on running my 38 liter Osprey. It is very comfortable up to about 50-60 pounds and I plan on keeping it light. I'll sling the rifle across my chest (18in .308). I can hike with my hands free that way. Very balanced setup.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

The Mayberry Mafia will be carrying our gear in a Ford Explorer, it should handle about 800 lbs of gear comfortably. You ETM guys are nuts. See you at the match.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

What are you guys that are carrying those giant packs plan on packing, I had to up my pack size to carry an AED for my partner and I. We are both poorly out of shape thus far.

Brandon </div></div>

I'll spare you the nitty gritty, but last year, my Eberlestock GSII had:

Rifle
100 rounds ammo
binos
Spotter/tripod
~1.5 liter water
1/4" diameter, 25" long steel rod
rain gear
rear bag
basic torx tools
data book
kestrel
light snacks
spare socks

The weight adds up fast. The pack itself weighs about 5lb, and loaded out, it weighed about 40-45 all up.

It got heavy, humping up the final grade of the day heading back to the lodge.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Damnit I cant sleep. My head is swimming in details. Might as well get up and tinker with some gear...

Re: 2013 Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Sorry I have been out of touch for a bit due to work. Is the match full. I just verified that I have my vacation locked in for the week of dec31-jan6. So I am still looking for a partner if the match still has open slots. I have a bolt gun or two. Putting together a new 20" 300wm and have a 308. I can shoot a carbine as well, but will need to borrow or buy one before then. I have access to a 400yd range for practice as well as occasional access to a 1000yd field. If anybody still needs a partner let me know and lets get signed up.

Re: 2013 Mammoth Sniper Challenge

There are only about 3 slots left for the match. There are over 6 teams that say they are coming. First 3 gets the slots.

The extreme division has 29 teams in it so far. 3 more than the other two combined have.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

So, I will be the nice guy and post up a gear list. Some people will pack more, some will pack less, but this is my list. It all fits in a Kifaru Pointman pack, except my sleeping bag is strapped on the bottom of the pack.

3-10rd AW Mags
Rear bag
Kestrel
Vectronix terrapin
iPod touch w/earbuds
Solar charger
PRS tripod
Small cleaning kit with allen wrenches
Surefire earplugs
Oakley sunglasses with low light lenses
Nalgene water bottle or water bladder
Lg drysack
5-gallon ziplock bags
Rain jacket and pants
6prs socks
6prs underwear
Small first aid kit w/moleskin
gloves
knit hat
ball cap
Rite in the Rain pad
protein bars
jerky
trail mix
half of my ammo
tent
sleeping bag
flashlight/head mounted maybe
fleece pullover
softshell jacket

Rifle w/sling and suppressor w/cover
Good waterproof boots

In the 2x2x2 box
Jetboil stove with fuel
coffee
MH freze dried food pouches for 4 meals
2 sporks
2 cups
2nd half of our ammo

Obviously depending on weather, the rain gear could be eliminated, or you may need more layers if its colder. Use the 2x2x2 box to its fullest potential and you can carry less.

Bill

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Are we going to have ample time to take our 2x2x2 boxes and fit gear in them before the shooter's meeting?

-Bryan

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

I'm planning on packing about the same amount of gear in my Eberlestock LoDrag that I did last year for the TM. I happen to have a 2x2x2 box here at home and let me tell you, its pretty spacious. I dropped a sleeping bag in it without compressing it and wow, lots of room in there. I'm sure we'll fill it up, but at this point I'm not planning on having to carry much more than last year.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

What's the story on the practice day Saturday? Do we check in at the clubhouse? Where are we shooting at? Can a 2wd truck drive to the range? Also what time does it start?

What about the 12" cooler? Is this a go for ETM?

I was looking for this same info mysel, planning to shoot saturday and part of the day sunday.

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Has the round count for the match stayed the same?
Can we get a round count max for each day ETM class?
Is the no communication rule between other teams only for stages? Or is in silence during camp hours also?
Are competitors not in ETM allowed to visit the campsite?

Re: 2013 JP Rifles/ Mammoth Sniper Challenge

Is the practice a pre match or just guys getting together practicing long range? I didn't know if the targets/stages that are going to be similar to match. Might be worth the trip if it ran like a pre match.
Thanks
Brandon

Seriously, I'm sure Joe will clarify things like round count etc a little closer to match time. We're still over a month away. If this match is anything like last years, time and effort now will be best spent shooting and getting some exercise (ie: jogging or hiking with your pack) if you're shooting TM or ETM.

I would much prefer to use my own.

I agree one should be provided in case a team does not own one.

It's probably only allowable to use the one provided to keep a level playing field
