Shrugs: Pulled Muscle?

Ok so im going to see the doc first thing tomorrow, but in the meantime let's see what everyone here thinks. I was doing shrugs today, started off with 2 sets of 20 with 90lb dumbbells, then on my last set I moved up to 100lbs. On the second rep I heard a distinct pop followed by a sharp pain in the center of my upper back. Its been about 4 hours since it happened and the pain is still there. It hurts to look left, right, and down towards the floor. So far there are no signs of swelling, just pain. Does anyone have any ideas if this may be a torn muscle, pinched nerve, or worst? If so what are some good remedies to help the pain?

Re: Shrugs: Pulled Muscle?

In my experiences, pulled muscles don't "pop". It could be any number of things, so I'm glad to hear that you're going to the doctor. In the meantime, max doses of ibuprofen, rest, and plenty of water are your best countermeasure. You can also try applying a cold pack (bags of frozen peas are great for this). 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off is what I was instructed to do by an athletic trainer in high school, but things may have changed since then.

Re: Shrugs: Pulled Muscle?

I get these. I (and others around me) have always referred to them as stingers. You'll be fine. It is going to hurt for a couple of three weeks, feel like someone is sticking a knife in you, and initially can exacerbated by the simple act of breathing.

Posture over the next couple of weeks is going to be important.

Couple of thoughts moving forward: a ladies nylon stocking tied with a knot in the middle, a tennis ball on each side of the knot, and then a knot at the end of each side of the tennis ball is helpful massage tool that you can use in between your shoulder blades (maybe not today though).

You may find it more practical to reduce the weight of each dumbbell, but hold the contraction at the top for a full 3 seconds, then work your way back up in weight.

Good luck

Re: Shrugs: Pulled Muscle?

I had the same thing happen to me years ago. I never got it checked out. It eventually went away, but tends to resurface in the same area from time to time. Hurts like hell.

Re: Shrugs: Pulled Muscle?

Thanks. Its been two days so far and I can still feel it, but nowhere near as bad as the day it happened. The dr just gave me some motrin and said it was nothing serious. So thats good news. I worked chest today and didn't even feel it

This^^.

I had this happen on my last set about 20 years ago. I dropped to the floor it was so painful, and kept hurting even when I took a breath. Give it rest and get to the doc.
