I just purchased a pair and I notice that when i have them on and and I get a louder noise such as my dog barking I get a bit of distortion to the barking noise before the muffs start to regulate (or shut down) the barking noise. It almost sounds like the electronics are getting over modulated just prior to the muffs electronics shutting the noise down or off.
Is this to be expected or normal, or did i get a bad pair of muffs?

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

turn them down maybe??

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

I own a pair and never had an issue with them.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Have your friend talk to you while you clap your hands in front of your face. It should lower the claps without distortion. A dogs bark might be to complicated for it to regulate properly

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Sounds weird. Mine just clip out when a loud noise comes. But I would agree that they function best when like at half volume. Been using for about 2yrs now without problems or changing the battery. For the price I really like them

Still hear the distortion even at lower volume although not as loud.
It almost sounds like the electronics may be a bit slow on the clipping of a loud noise which would cause over modulation of the speakers.

I have 3 pairs and never had that problem with any. Call Howard Leight and ask them. They are good people and repaired mine within a week.

Thought you never had a problem with them????

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

I have a pair and have had no issues with them. I always double up on hearing protection anyway and they keep your ears warm when its cold outside.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Mine quite working 3rd time out. I now just use the sure fire plugs.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Mine have been going strong for years, only get a little feedback when the volume is cranked too high. I haven't noticed what you're describing.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Mine have been great for the money. Never had this problem or any others

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

I have a set of them and wear foam plugs underneath. I keep the volume maxed so I can still hear and haven't noticed any distortion. I would give them a call and see what they say.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

I ran them steady for a year and doubled up with plugs. I kept the volume a little over half way, no problems at the range but I have never been around barking dogs with them.
I handed them down to my son, as I picked a different brand, I have to say that the HL's are a great muff for the money. Give their CS a call if you think that yours just aren't right, you might also try installing fresh batteries.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Never had any issues with mine, like most others use them on slightly lower volume. Any possibility of comparing them to a friend who has a pair?

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

I've purchased 10 pairs of these things, for myself and other shooting friends. Out of that 10, two of them had "battery spring" issues. As in, the little spring that pushes on the '-' end of the battery broke/snapped off.

Thus preventing the system from energizing. Same exact break in both pairs. Simple field-fix was to take the piece and wedge it in it's place, sideways. That got the system up and running for the time being, but up here in Canada there is no 'repair facility'.

I spoke with HL themselves, and their fix was for me to simply return the muffs to where I purchased them, and they would be credited two pairs.

Point of all this is, out of these 10 pairs I spoke of to begin with, this one problem (twice) is the ONLY problem that I or any of the other users has complained about.

My only other complaint would be that there is no repair facility to deal with. It seems that these are simply 'disposable' units. They do work nicely though, for the most part.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Well I called Howard Leight today and they said what I was describing wasn't normal.
So I returned them for an exchange and guess what. This new pair is worse, and i can hear a constant slight ticking in the muff that holds the battery. So I am thinking what I am hearing is somewhat normal. Go figure.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

Like most here, I have several pairs that have no issue. I have Peltors, Sordins and Threat4's for work but, I always keep a few of these around for guests or students. They have worked great and, you can't beat them for the price.

Re: Anybody own Howard Leight Impact Sport muffs?

I have 3 pair and haven't had your issue. I don't really use mine much anymore except for pistol shooting since I can't get a decent cheek weld with them on. I have also switched to the surefire plugs.
