Getting ready to build my first long range gun. Starting off with a savage 110 7mm action. sending it off to Chad Dixon, of Long Rifles Inc. To get a Krieger barrel put on it from bugholes. Then Im going to put a Choates Varmint stock on it with a Harris bipod. Then im Going to top it off with a bushnell Elite Tactical ERS 6-24x 50mm - G2DMR, .1Mil. I Dont know what i going to use for rings yet. So how does that sound for a first build??

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

Don't forget the bedding.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

Im going to try the bedding myself. If thats a good idea or not, I dont know.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

The more you can do your self the better. With that said its not too hard to bed a rifle, just take your time and use plenty of release agent.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

Score-high has some great products. You might consider using pillars as well if your stock does not come with them. Midway USA has it all including the tools needed.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

If you're already sending everything to Chad D., you should just have him bed and function test the rifle. Bedding is only $150-$200 and Chad has a remarkable bedding process (he has several threads on the gunsmithing section).

Why do you want a savage action? Stiller sells great actions that are already trued and have many of the upgrades that you would end up buying anyway on a precision build (oversize bolt knob, thick recoil lug, 8X40 base holes, fluted bolt, trued surfaces, etc.).

What are you doing for bottom metal or a trigger? What twist and contour are you using for your barrel? Are you going to thread the muzzle for a break? Any consideration to finishing?

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

Absolutely no knock on Chad (he makes beautiful, accurate rifles and I've exchanged messages about him doing a little work myself), but why send a Savage action to have a full on 'smithing done, to include shouldered barrel? Kind of defeats the entire benefit of a Savage action, IMO.

Are you planning to keep the rifle as 7RM? Remember, with a Savage you can change bolt heads in less than 5 minutes and go from a 204 to a 338 Edge.

Get a Criterion prefit barrel, ground lug and trued barrel nut from Jim Briggs @ Northland Shooter Supply, go/no-go gages and a barrel nut wrench, and install the barrel yourself. Get a Rifle Basix SAV-1 or SSS Competition trigger. Take the money you saved on gunsmith fees and put it toward a McMillan or Manners stock instead of the Choate. Bed it yourself (and if you mess up, Chad can fix it).

Take the money you saved and buy components and/or loaded ammo to practice until your ability exceeds the rifle's capability.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

In agreement with above. The whole point of the Savage action is you can rebarrel/change the bolt face yourself with very little tools. Add the cost of headspace gauges (or rent them for about $10). You'll save a few hundred in labour charges.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

Yup, have Chad bed it, he built my rifle, bedding job is top notch, and try some TPS rings, much cheaper than Badger and as good. This is what Chad built for me. This rifle wears TPS rings.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

My only experience with a Savage is with their rimfire rifles, and I have yet to change out a barrel with it. From Boiler's post, I presume your desire to go with a Savage receiver is for ease in changing barrels. Is this correct? If that is your desire, then you want a stock and bottom metal that provides you flexibility with different caliber options. Will you be satisfied with a hinged floor plate (BDL), top loader feeding style system, or would you prefer a DBM (magazine) system? If you want a DBM system, it is easy to find AICS type gear. I haven't looked to see how compatible AICS feeding systems are with Savage receivers ... you might want to research that.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

Savage bolt action centerfires really don't have a BDL-style hinged bottom metal. The standard for decades has been an ADL-styled blind magazine, but increasingly more new models are coming with a factory DBM.

For a long action Savage, the very best option is CDI Precision. You can get a standard long action DBM that uses AICS-pattern 300WM magazines, or you can get a DBM that uses AICS-pattern 308 magazines.

My 223AI is built on a 110 long action with CDI LA/308 mag DBM...works like butta.

Re: Heres my new build list, What do u think.

Im trying to do a build under $2000. Thats all the funds i have. Talked to a few people and they said the savages actions out of the box were pretty muched trued already. Chad said on the few builds he did blue printing didnt help them any. I already have a savage 110 action. In 7mm. I dont plan on doing any barrel swaps. Then down the road going to put some bottom metal on it. Has any one heard of bad on the savage actions for long range shooting. I always see rem 700 actions.
