While trying to locate a little Varget, I stopped by Cabelas. I spoke with one of the people who reorder for them, and asked where the heck all the powder was. He informed me there is 300,000 pounds of powder "stuck" in customs. Funny how powder has made it through all these years and now this?

I can't confirm, but possibly someone out in SH Land can.

WTF?

I just located this, although it is outbound...

I thought Varget was made here. I know that the vitavourhi powders are not made here, does that explain the scarcity of varget too?

I wonder if the manufacturers are withholding it to drive up prices?

Powder making it in but it is spoken for as quickly as it is repackaged by Hodgdon. Somebody making up rumors or at least spreading rumors that they didn't take time to confirm.

Varget is made in Australia.
Vith is in Sweden.
IMR in Canada.

Next to no powder actually made in US for a while now.

I do know Hodgdon blew through 18,000 lbs of Varget right after they came back from Christmas/New Years shut down. More Varget coming in late Feb but with the panic buying a 50K lb lot# of Varget isn't going to last very long.

Actually I believe General Dynamics makes powder in Florida, and ATK/Alliant makes powder in Connecticut. Not to try and lessen the importance of imported powder, just make the picture more complete. S.

Correct about powder made in FL. Got a fishing bud down there who works at the plant. I wish he could hook us up, but he values his job too much.

In Col Warden's five rings theory on warfare, he advocates looking for chokepoints in supply and targeting them as a way to destroy the ability of an adversary to fight.

It appears that the concentration of gunpowder manufacturing is one of those chokepoints that definitely make for a fragile supply chain. Our reliance on foreign manufacturing for such a critical product make a shortage even more likely.

Looks like we need more domestic sources of powder.

Unfortunately, just one more reason to stack whatever supplies you think you will need deep when you are able.Even before this political mess it seems that primers and powder were often scarce.

Most of the Alliant Reloader series rifle powders have made in Sweden on container. I avoid double base if I can so I've not looked that close at Alliant/ATK rifle powders lately.

St. Mark's makes primarily ball powder in FL, I don't see a single extruded powder offered by St. Mark's

I should have been more specific. Next to no single base, extruded powder is manufactured in the US. Double base ball powder......it has it's place but I'd much rather run a single base extruded if possible.

On a related issue, there is currently a bill,HB468, on the docket of the Montana legislature. This bill if passed and signed into law would provide incentives for the manufacture of components within the State. Powder, brass, and primers are specifically mentioned. The incentives listed include income and property tax exemption.
The goal is to ensure a continuing supply of these essential parts of ammunition in this state. It should also increase industry and create jobs. What a concept.

Many of the most popular powders sold under the Hodgdon brand in the USA (including Varget and H4350) are made by ADI Ltd. in Australia. Some load manuals list ADI data, but not Hodgdon data, or vice-versa, so we’ve compiled this list of equivalent powders. If you can’t find a recommended load for a particular Hodgdon powder in your caliber, download the latest ADI Smokeless Powders Handloaders Guide, a 2.8 megabyte Acrobat file.
