New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

xrifle003.jpg

Nine pounds all up as is....scope is a 10X42 S&B PMII, rings are Talley 30MM Lightweight Lows. I get all 13.2 mils of travel without a rail.
xrifle006.jpg

I'm running 139 scenars at 3175fps without ANY sign of pressure. 3250 would be easy. I range in meters and shoot in Mils. I use a 210 meter zero.

SM.
I fear you may have bought your last hunting rifle....how the hell can you improve on this beast??? :D Congrats on an awesome stick!

I have an unused 2.5-10x32 in Mils if any of ya'll are looking for one. This cartridge is pretty impressive.

I put eyes on 300 7saum brass and 350 300saum brass today at Vanns deer processing. Anyone looking give then a shout, sure they will ship 601-825-9087. Pacing the floor waiting on #10 to arrive. Order a March 3x24 today! What height talley rings?

Does this Extreme Hunter use the Extreme titanium action? Is that the extreme part of the name?

the 6.5mm Rem SAUM is an extremely fast and flat flying cartridge. It is a barrel burner in the truest sense of the word, but barrel life can be extended if sent to MMI Trutec for their Salt Bath Nitriding. The 130 grain VLD's usually go so fast out of the 6.5 SAUM that bullet drop is negligible over relatively long distances. In that respect it is indeed a great -EXTREME even- hunting cartridge, but one that you wouldn't want to take to the range every week.

Why is that? I take mine to the range everyday. All you have to do is control your shooting strings and allow for a cool down in between mag changes. I usually do no more then a 10 round mag and give it 5-10 minutes to cool down. I run suppressed as well, so you have to allow for that heat to dissipate. The pressures in the gun are so low that I think people will be shocked at performance to barrel life ratio.

I stand corrected then. Seems there are techniques to enhance barrel life.

Called this morning and the 7mm is gone already...

Very nice looking rifle you got there Pat...and great ballistics. Hopefully it will catch on and someone like Hornady will start offering brass.

Can you explain your "chart" ? I'm thinking the first number is meters but what's the 2nd ?

I would wager that the second number is drop in mills (without the decimal point)....

Im back in town and unthawed, the Icebreaker was a great time as usual. The Xtreme Hunter is just at its debut, Im not one to just throw a product at guys without a year of testing. Yes I have over 3400 rounds on my rifle now and its still shooting sub 1/2" Bryan Yeung on Team GAP shot one to 2800 and it was still in the 1/2 " range. This is proven. Its not a real secret its about Pressure!! The 308 runs at at pressures of 53000-58000 PSI I wanted to find a case that would make 3100 with a High BC Bullet at that same low low pressure. The Saum was wat we landed at with lots of testing. With a 140 JLK I could get 3080 FPS with only 53000 PSI I shot this load for a year, guys there are many to witness, I shot this at Lonestar, Snipershide Cup, PTS, Maammoth, and Nor-Cal I shot this at last years IceBreaker, and this years as well , with alot of practice in between, all on the same original Barrel. It still shoots great. The same load is now 3020 but with 63 grains of H1000 and the 130 Berger im getting 3180 in this same warn out ;) Rifle with that group at 1157 to prove it still has some life. Guys this is Legit its about pressure!!!! This cartridge is Game Changing and the Xtreme Hunter is the only rifle a Guy needs in N America.

2 guys now have commented after shooting one. both Quotes were Identical!!! " This is the Deadliest rifle Ive ever shot"!!! Both guys are far from Amateur!

After seeing yours in action both in Montana last fall on game and steel and the comp rifle at the Cup and IB 2 is why I committed to one ! Stupid accurate, great barrel life, performance surpassing caliber and all on a short action !

I really think this is gonna be a record setting / record breaking caliber !

How many steps in case prep? What kind of life are you getting out of your brass? And will we maybe see 6.5 SAUM brass like the 6mm Creedmoor?

George- First off I wanted to thank you for my Gap 10 I received last week with a 22" fluted barrel, Magpul PRS stock and DMR trigger. My scope should be in next week so I can finally shoot it, but overall looks great. I have been looking at ordering a rifle and it would primarily used for Elk hunting. I'm out here in Montana and we have some long shots and I was originally thinking about a 300wsm? You feel that this is a better option for elk? I appreciate your opinion and looking forward to getting my next elk rifle ordered up!

A 7mm SAUM can drive a 162 or 168 gr to those MVs or pretty darn close, with H-1000. The 162 and 168 basically match the BCs on the 140gr 6.5mm, so what makes the 6.5mm SAUM so revolutionary? Is it that the 6.5mm SAUM can achieve those MVs with much lower pressures than the 7SAUM, thereby improving barrel and brass life? Trying to understand the rationale. Thanks. Very interesting stuff.

Are those bartlien #3 contours? Their #3's are a bit heavier than my #3 Rock aren't they? A 140 at 3020 is about like a 6.5-06 AI isn't it? Nice rifles, I love 6.5's and have shot my last 4 deer with my 264, 260, and 6.5 creedmoor. I have a 700 saum action and a #3 rock. This has me thinking but I sold all my 7saum brass to Sendero man.

Hornady wanted a 100k piece order for specially made brass. Norma and Remington might be the same numbers. Even if they charge $1.50 a piece you are looking at George having to spend $150k on brass that might not move quickly. This caliber is just catching on where as the 6mm Creedmoor caught on in about 30 seconds.
Having that much brass means pre-orders. If I was George I would want a lot of people committed to the brass before I even thought about putting that kind of money down. Give it time and Im sure it will happen.

This is why I wanted it BB ! GRIN

Pat is shooting the 139 Scenar at 3175 and the test loads I ran with the 140 Amax were 3171. Both at Pat's shoot in MT last weekend. So, exact same conditions for both rifles. Neither showed any signs of pressure and I know you could run them even hotter if ya wanted.

I am gonna do more testing and tweaking with mine and run them at or below that speed.

Sendero Man- What is the heaviest bullet you can run? I'm just wondering for Elk if this cartridge can run a heavy enough bullet. I like to have at least 160 gr. (I know you can go less) and wondering if this is will do what I want for elk?

Matrix is making a 160 grainer that is getting a LOT of attention over at LRH: BTW- they are Stabilizing out past 1k in an 1-8" twist.

I'm testing the 140 Grain Cutting Edge right now. The 130 CEB's are kicking some critter ass in my 6.5WSM.

Yes, you could. But I don't know where you'd find a 160 that would work.

I wouldn't hesitate using the 130 or 140 at all ! I know that is what I will run.

I know George took his elk and mule deer with the 130 Berger last year with Pat in MT.

The 130gr Berger Hunting VLD is more then capable of taking large game at the speeds it is putting up!

Don't forget, Mr. Sinclair dropped a Grizz with his light weight .260!
Of course, you gotta put it in the right spot...

That's true.

So how many steps in case prep and what dies do you using. What kind of case life are you getting.

Three steps in case prep, Neck down with a .295 bushing. Pull back through a .264 expander same step, Turn neck to .013-.015 thickness (removes any runout from sizing down) . Size with .290 bushing and trim to 2.025 (2.035 max)

Copper Creek Cartridge is prepping brass for sale as well as loaded ammo.

As far as it being a good caliber and the 130 Berger for Elk. There was 3 shot this year with it. mine at a tad over 300, Pat shot one at 600+ and a buddy of pats over 800 all with the 130 Hunting VLD and one shot Kills with less than a few yards from where shot and recovered.

Thank you. Great info. I know what my next build is.

I have a friend that has killed way in excess of 80 elk over the years. Always used a .270 with 130 gr bullets. The 130 or 140 in the 6.5's should do just as well if not better. The new 160 gr matrix's should also work very well. Not going to do the job if you shoot them in the hindquarters..... 130/140 through the lungs does it every time.
Seems like it was Carmichael with Outdoor Life that took a 6.5 to Africa a year or two ago. Killed a number of animals including an Eland. Seems like they were all 1 shot kills. This 6.5 SAUM will shoot very flat. Low recoil makes them easy to practice with. Just a great approach for lots of different hunting opportunities. Bruce

So is it the low psi that is giving the ultra long barrel life? Or is there a something else in how GA is putting them together?

What are these critter going to cost a guy?

Thank you George and Sendero Man! Looks as this may be my next Elk rifle
