I'm wasn't sure about it but the trailer was decent and Ben Forster and Eric Bana are decent actors. Not sure at all about Taylor Kitsch. Kinda looking forward to it though.

still one of the greatest books I've ever read. Movie actually looks pretty damn good, Mk12's and all.

"Notwithstanding some of the most intense and realistic battle scenes in recent memory, it goes beyond the average war film in fleshing out real three-dimensional human beings caught up in the moral consequences of war, and in that way is more reminiscent of past Best Picture Oscar winners like Platoon (1986) and Universal’s own The Deer Hunter (1978). One scene in particular is riveting to watch in which the SEALS, weighing their own chances of survival, collectively must decide if a small group of locals should live or die. Certainly the film presents moral dilemmas that will cause strong debate. It is based on the New York Times bestseller, Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account Of Operation Redwing And The Lost Heroes Of SEAL Team 10 by Marcus Luttrell (with Patrick Robinson), the Navy SEAL portrayed in the film by Wahlberg."

Universal Moves Mark Wahlberg War Drama 'Lone Survivor' Into 2013 Oscar Race - Deadline.com

"Been around the world twice, talked to everyone once. There ain't nothing i can't do no sky to high, no sea to rough. Learned a lot of lessons in my life: never shoot a large caliber man with a small caliber bullet, anything in life worth doing is worth over doing, moderation is for cowards, I'm lover, i'm a fighter, i'm a UDT Navy Seal Diver."

That is one awesome speech for just 15 seconds. From Googling it seems that's the edited version.

I hope Peter Berg can pull this off.

I've never gone and seen a movie on opening night before, but I've been praying that someone makes a movie out of this ever since the book first came out. Every day goes by I get more excited about it. . . don't know if I can make it till December. . . must hold on. . . must hold on. . .

God, I hope they don't fuck this up. The trailer looks nice, I hope the movie is the same quality, and at least as good as the book.

If Mark Wahlberg could pull this off, then it could be akin to his brother's role in Band of Brothers.

This is a big acting role for him. I hope he understands it.

Couldn't agree more. Hell seen BoB twice now and didn't remember that he was in it.

How does Lone Survivor book compare to Adam Brown's story "Fearless"? I've read the later, going to pick up LS now. "Fearless" was a tear jerker for us all. My parents met Adam's Parents when they went down to their "While We're Waiting" weekend retreat for bereaved parents who have lost a child.

very edited as it should be and shouldn't even be in the fucking movie

Do you mean there shouldn't be an edited version in the movie, or that the speech is a private SEAL thing that no one else should hear?

I believe Joe is saying it should only be known to the men who earned the right to know it. What happens in the team room should stay in the team room and not end up in books, movies, forums, or the news.

Makes sense.

Joe, do you want me to remove that above? Didn't mean any offense by it nor was i meaning to make it look like i was saying it, hence the quotation marks.

The two most liberal shit holes in the country. The people who the SEAL's feared would crucify them if they would have smoked those pussy goat herders. I don't get it?

If it were not for liberals with bleeding hearts for the enemy, this movie would not even exist, because the SEAL's would have made it back alive, instead of following bullshit rules

Geez, you guys are so predictable sometimes. Did it ever occur to you that there might actually be a business strategy to open the film in limited run in NY and LA in Dec? "Black Hawk Down" was also done that way in 2001, if you might remember. The reason is because those are the two largest film markets in the country and the film industry centers of each coast. Movie release schedules are planned and announced very far in advance and for the movie studios it's some crazy voodoo they try to figure out how to place each film with a chance to perform best. In this case they're eyeing the film to compete against a slate of films in January and they've figured this is its best chance.

The Oscars are the second component to this. If the film debuts in Jan 2014, it can compete in 2015 Oscars which means more than a year will go by before Academy voting begins. So the smart move, and this is common around Dec, is to release the film in those key markets in limited run in Dec. This can help build buz within the industry and then you get a second try in Jan when it goes in wide release. Hopefully it stays in theaters for 4 or 5 weeks, so you're well into February by then and the Oscars are in March. That way it's fresh in their minds and the movie has just increased its odds at recognition.

Just watched Savages Taylor Kitsch ought to be alright as a soldier.

All the more reason to understand the film is FAR from complete. They're likely just starting post-production, which is now the longest portion of the overall process, with non-stop editing for the next few months along with visual effects, sound design, musical score and finally the digital intermediate. For those folks, December will be here before they know it.

Hmm. The trailer makes it seem like they did the right thing by not killing an unarmed child, even at the expense of their own safety . . . kind of makes it seem like that's the whole point, really. Is there more I should find out, from reading the book or something?

In the book you get the impression that killing the locals who compromised them was the best decision for continuing the mission, but they believed "the liberal media will crucify us." So they decided to abort the mission, free the locals and move to extraction but things obviously went south. There's a pretty heavy hyper-partisan slant to the book, talking about how they would see hate in the local's eyes and really build it up like "man, if only they would let us kill these folks, we could have accomplished our mission, but Nancy Pelosi and Michael Moore won't let us." If you're letting your fear of people like that saying bad things about you decide how you conduct your missions, there's some big problems. Regardless, they made their decision and put up a valiant effort and every one of those guys deserves respect. I just thought the way the decision played out in the book was a lame excuse. There's a bit of a precedent to this with Chief Balwanz' ODA in Desert Storm being compromised in their hide and making the same decision to abort and extract. And because of their decision they too were in the fight of their lives and luckily made it out alive. You could argue that Redwings had some planning flaws and you could argue that luck was on the enemy's side that day, but that doesn't take away from their heroic efforts. I just didn't buy the excuse as portrayed in the book. Yes, the moral high ground doesn't win wars, but we are better than the enemy in every step we take in conducting ourselves as soldiers and the more we forget that in a FID environment, the more we step further and further from strategic victory.

I don't know about that. I'm not in the military, and have never been to combat. But I can see where they are coming from. From what I've seen in this county, I would be terrified to kill those civilians for the same reason.

Lone Survivor and Fearless have to be the two best books I've ever read. What these guys go through is utterly amazing. The movie could not possibly do what ML went through justice, but I will still be in line to watch it. I hope it portrays the fallen seals as the heros that they were.

Has anybody seen the other Lone Survivor trailer that is on YouTube? Has different actors cast for the team members. What is that all about?

Nor have I. Seems to be all the same. Walhberg will be fine! He did a great job in shooter!

Anyone know the release date?

Wahlberg i'm on the fence about same goes for Emile. Other than The Departed Wahlberg seems to be the same over and over again. Kitsch i think will be alright and Foster is just a good actor. I would've preferred Eric Bana to play Luttrell but then too much of hoot might come out. Idk we'll see.

I agree that Bana should play Luttrell. He's a great actor. Wahlberg is well...decent.

Both are too old - Kitsch would make more sense age wise to play that role, but this is seriously splitting hairs. I just like how this part of the forum bounces between "fuck fucking Hollywood fucks" to "oh man, I'm so excited to see this movie but I want so and so to play so and so instead."

You know i've never held actors in that regard, otherwise i wouldn't watch movies because most of them are liberal/anti-gun. It's kind of like Mel, everyone hates him for what he does off screen, i couldn't give two shits about his personal life as long as he does his job on screen. Which he does the guy can freaking act.

I can't wait to see the sequel, but I wish Gary Coleman was still alive so he could play Chief Luttrell.

so let me get this straight the 5'8" Marky Mark is going to play the 6'5" tall Chief Luttrell?

Man, haven't you ever seen a movie with Tom Cruise, Al Pacino, or Sly Stallone? All 5'7"-5'8". Actor height has nothing to do with how tall they can make you look on camera.

And for all you Hollywood/Cali haters (I know not everyone here), where would you be without your Saving Private Ryan, Band O Brothers, Black Hawk Down flicks. And oh, yeah I worked on Black Hawk and many of those "liberal actor types" in the film were gun owners. There was a great video of the director Ridley Scott shooting a fully auto M16a2 at the training range, with a shit eating grin after.

Hmm I guess it might be a good movie, I guess, and actually think that it was wrong to let the young men herding goats loose, reasons withheld, I guess if the ROE states no harm to unarmed, then that is so,
I know, even though I know nothing of the men depicted in the movie that they were heroes in that real sense of the word and that they are to be honored.

Will I see the movie, I might, will I read the books, yes I will. /CHris

Glad this is finally coming out...looks 1000 times better than "Act of Valor"
I still cant get over the production quality of that movie...horrible.
