Finally got her done. Preliminary tests are encouraging.

    Specs:

    4140 Chromoly action:

    a. Gun drilled/honed bore
    b. EDM raceways
    c. One piece bar stock machined bolt body
    d. 3 position safety with oversize firing pin block
    e. Pinned recoil lug
    f. Win M70 style trigger
    g. Control round feeding
    h. Non rotating extractor
    i. Keyed 20moa Mil-Spec 1913 base with 10-32 base screws
    j. Cone breech design with no extractor cut
    k. timed/tuned fire control setup

    Barrel:

    30" Bartlein 10 twist in 30 caliber

    Brake:
LRI's prototype Magnum brake (so far so good) made from some "space ghost" form of SS. (not sure what it is, but it's a biche to machine!)

    Stock:

    Manners uninletted blank T5A thumbhole

    Optics:

USO SN3 Tpal with Horus squiggles. 3-17x

    Chamber:

300-338 Lapua Magnum setup for 220grain Lapua OTM Scenar bullets to be magazine tolerant in a Sako TRG magazine

    Floormetal:

LRI designed/built DBM using Sako TRG 338 Lapua Length magazines with single button "SIG" style magazine release.

    Paint/Finish work:

LRI Holographic Desert pattern on stock and 5:1 mix of Burnt Bronze/Graphite Black ceracoat on all metalwork.

    Performance thus far:

3250fps and 1/4 to 1/3 moa at 100 yards using 93 grains of Retumbo with a 215 Federal primer, Lapua brass and Lapua 220g OTM bullets.

Extended long range testing didn't go so well yesterday morning. The 35mph winds, too hot a load, and me just trying to get settled with the gun resulted in some issues. Thankfully the afternoon session went much, much better. It gave me a great baseline to use for the next range test.

Now I just need to practice, practice, practice.

Good looking rig Chad, as always. I'm looking forward to reading a few more range reports, get that bitch out!

Looks great, Chad - that's quite an awesome accomplishment.

    A amazing piece of work.
Will be very interested in seeing morre reports, and more info on you're new action.

I fondled this beast when I was at the shop a few weeks ago and it is damn impressive. Got me thinking about building a 300-338 myself. 220-240 class bullets over 3000 fps= winning...

No chit. Just when I thought I had all the wildcats I could stand :D Damn it Chad!

I wonder if a guy shouldn't spin up 2 barrels & keep one for fire forming only.....

I think this beast would be a prime candidate for meloniting as well.

Do you even have to fire form? Seems like it would be as simple as necking down with bushing dies and good to go.

For some reason, I had it in my head that this was an improved cartridge.... IDK, i'm still on my first cup of coffee :D

If its just as simple as necking down I can handle that. I hate brass prep so I am hoping its a simple one or two step procedure with a die.

Oh no doubt, I don't have a problem with necking down a couple times, bushings aren't that expensive (I'd probably do at least 2). I hear you about brass prep, I "accidentally" lose my neck turning kit all the time :D

If I ever get to the point that I have to neck turn I'm hanging up the spurs...lol

Chad it looks very nice! I am loving the use of the TRG mags again! What is up with the fluting or I guess more correctly the machining on the barrel? It looks like there are long acute triangles machined into it or is that an optical illusion?

    Thanks guys.

Barrel fluting? I experiment on my own stuff. It was an idea that ultimately I don't care for much. Doesn't affect how it shoots so as soon as this stick is cooked, I'll stick another onto it.

I have a 34" tube coming in a 20 twist for 125BT's from Nosler. Hoping to scream out at 4500fps. Dunno, have to see. Quickloads says its possible, but the real world is where I try to live. It'll take some dinking around to sort it out.

    Case prep:

    It's easy.

    New brass:

I use a Sinclair neck mandrel die just to straighten any kinked necks first. I do this to all the cases 1st time around. Just gets everything on the same page.

I made a neck reduction sizer die out of a chunk of barrel and the finish reamer used for the barrel(s). I only went in about 1/4 past the shoulder/body junction. Threaded the OD and screw it into the press. A little imperial and it squishes the neck nice and easy.

Then I F/L the case in a Redding 338LM body die. Just a touch on the shoulder.

Then they go to the case trimmer. I have a Sinclair Micrometer head attached to the wilson body die trimmer setup. Cases run typically around 2.725" after squishing the necks. I trim to 2.710".

    Burr the edges as usual.

Then gassem up with primers, gogo dust, and squish a bullet in it.

I run the Lapoopoos at 3.715. Just inside the Sako magazine length.

Easy stuff. Throated the bore +.200 from the ogive. I may go more. . .(this barrel is a lab rat)

I really, really, really want 3400fps out of this biche with the heavy stuff.

Thanks again for the kind words and encouragement. It's been a really fun project. Shooting it in my first match in over 13 years the 5th of Oct. We'll see how it goes.

Oh great, I have to shoot against that sumbitch Oct 5? Guess I'll have to gas up the 105s to 3300 to stand a chance....

It would appear you used the barrel engraving from my .338 Lapua on that barrel. Good to know you still have the program because I have a funny feeling you're about to be doing another one.
