Threading a barrel already on action

Is it possible to get this done? Are there any reasons why I should not get this done? The rifle in question is a Remington 700P. What should I expect to pay for such a service? The reason for threads is I want to put a brake on my 300 win mag. The recoil makes calling your shots just a little bit too hard. Just trying to be a knowledgeable consumer.

Edit: Rifle has the stock 26" barrel

Whether or not the barrel needs to be pulled is going to depend on the lathe your Smith has and how skilled of a machine operator he is. I can thread barrels as short as 16" through my headstock and shorter barrels I can work over the bed. Its just a matter of workholding and fixturing the barrel/action accurately.
I have seen prices quoted anywhere between $50.00 to $150.00.

Is porting an option for you or are you set on a brake?

I hadn't considered it. I like the threads + brake route for several reasons. I can take it off when I'm shooting at 100 yards and when I don't want to make those around me deaf and when I finally get around to buying a can its a simple matter of removing the break and installing the can. Also if I really hate the brake, I can just take it off. Porting is a more permanent measure. Those are my initial thoughts on the matter anyway.

I am getting ready to send a barreled action to Short Action Customs.

AFAIK they will thread it on the action. For $125 they will cut the barrel back, recrown, thread, install and contour the brake and Cerakote.

Your machinist should be able to thread the bbl with the action still on. It really does depend on the length through the headstock of his lathe though.

Whatever he does, since you don't have either a brake or a suppressor yet, you will need to have him make you a thread protector for the end of the muzzle. Mine is knurled for easy removal and is so inconspicuous you have to look for it. Then again, the guys at Accurate Ordinance are pretty good machinists. You might think about sending them the work.

If you are considering a can In the future, get a proprietary muzzle brake now to make installation of the can easier In the future.
Surefire or AAC brakes are examples of what I am conveying but there is a whole section for info.

I should probably note that the rifle is a 300 win mag. Does that effect which brakes I can use?

To a degree, yes.
You don't want a brake that has its ports designed for .223 gas impulses.
That being said I would feel most any brake designed for the .30 caliber will be fine depending on what you are trying to acheive. I am sure there are some brake gurus here that have forgotten more than I will ever know on them.

$125 with cerakote sounds awfully cheap. Are you positive thats what they charge?

I sent Short Action Customs an email since I've had a friend who had a good experience with em. Will also send Accurate Ordinance an email. If the cost to get the barrel in action threaded is high/requires removing barrel, I may considered a clamp on muzzle brake. Is there any large downsides or gotchas I should be aware of?

That price sounds right in line for the work involved. There is no need to pull the barrel. Muzzle brake installation including timing if needed and new 11 degree crown is $100 around here. Another $20 if you want the brake Cerakoted. The rifle on the left is a Browning A-bolt in 270WSM. It has a 9/16-24 CSR brake and smooth thread protector. The one on the right is Savage sporter in 300 Win Mag.

Am I correct in assuming that the barrel does not need any refinishing?

Sent my 700 5R barrel with the action attached to G.A. Precision a couple of years back to have them thread and install a Badger FTE brake. They did the work without removing the action. Worth every penny and the turn around time wasn't too bad. Call Ken Lin there for information.

Sadly the cost of shipping the guns (almost 100 dollars both ways) makes the cost of adding the brake a bit higher than I would like. I live in SW VA and will check some places closer to me. But, I got some great info in this thread, so thank you all!
