Suppressors Question about Gemtech's quickmount

I bought a Rem 700 with the standard Gemtech quickmount already installed. My original intensions were to buy a Quicksand and run it as is.

After reading some discouraging reviews on the Quicksand and not having any good Gemtech dealers in my area, I am now exploring other options.

If I go with a differant can will I have to have a spacer made where the muzzle was profiled for the Gemtech quickmount? Is there a way to time say the Thunderbeast 30BAS's brake adapter without shortening the barrel?

It's only a 20" barrel and I would still like to shoot 175-178 grain projectile at around 2600fps so shortening the barrel is not optimal.

You could run a surefire or griffen I believe.

Judging by your speed you want youre probably talking about a 308 and if so 2600 is going to be real optimistic for a 20" slinging 175s. My load is 44gr of varget which is over book max and Im only getting 2650 out of a 24" 5R. People with aftermarket barrels can get a bit more or if you hang the bullet out a bit further and throw more powder to it but youre treading on thin ice at that point. Just warning you before you get your hopes up too much.

You can time muzzle brakes with peel washers/shims, no need to cut the barrel. You can see the silver shim between the barrel and brake on my 308

All depends on what you want to do with the can as to what type you should go with. Id steer clear of a QD design if youre wanting upmost precision. Griffin has taper mounts, TBAC has a nice brake attach and then of course the direct thread models.

I ran my Quicksand on my Rem SPS Tac with no luck. The groups went from between 1/2 & 3/4 MOA to 1.5 MOA with the Quicksand. I'm told that if you use the Gemtech Tension mount it will help but it would require some work on the barrel. I've had the Quicksand for awhile...before I really got in to precision. Now I wish I had a thread on .308 can.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough in my first post but my barrel has been profiled at the muzzle for this gemtech quickmount. I believe it is a their "tension" mount, the one that slips over the barrel.
If I were to remove it, there would be approx. 1.5" of smooth, turned down barrel between the threads and the shoulder that a crush washer would seat on.

Am I stuck with Gemtech now or could I use something else without cutting off an inch of barrel?

If the `turned down' barrel starting rearward of the threads has a dimension of D or larger per Zak's link, you are good to go, otherwise not.

I can't find the exact mount that matches that description. If you could email me a photo of it that might help, or even better unscrew the existing brake and take a photo of what's under it, with a few accompanying measurements.

I would not let an inch of barrel or an existing mount determine what can I bought. I have a quicksand and like it very much. I like my 30BA a bit better. I have , and people everyday , shoot LMT gas guns with 16 inch barrels out to 1k. IMHO, consider whacking an inch and get the can you want, and a can that you will own for 3 rifles after this one.

All the best

I have the tension mount on my Rem 700 SPS SD. The only mod I have done to the rifle is to throw it into a nice HS stock. It is a sub-MOA gun with and without the can. I bought GemTech because they are local and have always treated me very well. I have heard of some precision issues with the one of their standard or Smith BiLock mounts. But I have shot several rifles with the tension mount and have been very happy. Their shop demo gun in an 18" Savage in 308 that shoots sub-1/2 moa and they run it out to a grand routinely. Either way you go, staying with GemTech or having to cut the barrel, get the set up you want and don't worry if it is an 18 or 20" barrel.

You would need to redo your barrel for a TBAC BA, here's a picture of what you have;

I haven't tried to pull it but from what I understand, It's about .630" for 1.53" after the threads. That's according to the drawing posted by Eben.
Break-
Eben thanks for finding that, I've been searching for a while. I was afraid that would be the case, what to do.....

Yeah that's problematic. In theory a bushing that was perfect would work but it would be a much better idea sell the barrel ("already cut for Quick Mount!") and get a new one. At the least you'll to cut it back

That's why I bought the Sandstorm for my Rem SPS Tac, I prefer the thread on cans. Never cared for the QD or ratchet setups.
