Huck Finn showed in literature the humanity of a black man at a time they were considered chattel. Had my kids watch a three odd hour video made in the 70s. I cringed at the language out of fear an 8-9 year old would mimic it but all they got out of it was the sense of the adventure Jim and Huck had.

but lets condemn the story.

Bang, bang doesnt think its banned but as the article shows its not being taught.

Part of the reason is they dont want to offend the sensibilities of snow flakes that cant think.

The real reason is that its a classic of American literature and is part of the fabric of American culture.....

Bang Bang would have it replaced with Saul Alinsky Rules for Radicals.

THough, fortunately, I wasnt there, my observation is that perhaps the greatest factor in ending racism was the war in Viet Nam. It would be hard to be racist when youre in a foxhole with a man and depending on him to watch your back.

I think every conflict or war has that effect, not just Vietnam. When you put your life in your brother's hands (and he the same with you), racism tends to fall away. Only loyalty and trust matter.

From what I understand, there was massive racial tension and issues in Vietnam, but not among combat and line units. In the rear areas, however, there was a lot of tension. Especially late in the war, reflecting tensions in post '68 America. But among combat units, the general feeling was one of... we're all green here. And we are all going to get each other home. I wasn't there... so this is based on reading. But it certainly supports PMI's assertion.

As for racism... it's everywhere. It's ingrained in the human genome. Because fear of the 'other' was a survival mechanism dating back to standing up on two feet on the Veldt and separating ourselves from Stanley Kubrick's monkeys. We have made tremendous progress in just a couple of generations... on many levels. Racism, sexism... all kinds of 'ism's' Does humanity have further to go? Yup. But compared to places where people hack each others hands off because their grandfather's grandfather's grandfather belonged to the wrong tribe... SH is pretty darn progressive.

I believe you confuse bias with racism.

Racism is no joke and magnitudes higher in its insidious harm than an individuals bias.

Sure bias can be dehumanizing and you probably lead a culture into racism by exploiting a bias.

Im thinking an educated population can differentiate.

When they cant Veer comes along and puts the person that goes a half step too far back in place.

I don’t have any racism connected to a persons genetic makeup. I was engaged to an African woman in college but she had to return to the Congo because of family issues.

My problem is that after meeting and getting to know the decent people of Africa, god I fucking hate the American gangster rap culture. Pants dragging drug smoking deadbeat dads singing along with the “Kill the Poe-leece” music. Fuck them, regardless of their genetic make up.

I was in a restaurant yesterday and a gang of urban rappers showed up for a video shoot. They immediately started whining about whitey and racism and blah blah blah. I told the restaurant “I’m fuckin leaving, keep the fucking food” pretty loudly. One of the cameramen working the thing asked me “what the fuck man?” And I answered “do they still whine about this shit behind the wheel of their brand new Porsche?”

Swedes think Finns are unusual , Norwegians look at Icelanders funny .
The Brazilians believe they are better than the Columbians , northern
Columbians think they speak better Spanish than those from Bogotá .
Etc Etc . There is fierce interstate rivalry here in Aus , especially around
State of Origin rugby league time

Meanwhile we are like , well anyone south of Texas ... We all try to treat
each situation and person on merit , unfortunately some behaviour keeps

Words and interpretations are tricky, but I really meant racism. I agree, to a point, that education can help, but it is certainly no panacea. There are some highly educated persons that are the most racist Ive encountered, though tehy tend to usually hide it or disguise it.

I grew up in the rural south in the 50's and have seen racism first hand...4 toilets. Black men while free to walk the same sidewalk would rarely raise their heads and meet your gaze and always prefixed addressing a white man with 'Mr. John/William/James etc.. It just wasnt culturally acceptable at that time for them to be completely equal. Crosses burnt itnthe front yard of black families who got too 'uppity'.

Yes I kind of define racism as an institutional policy, our segragated military was an example of racism.

A person espousing such segregation based on race would be a racist.

A person that makes a claim of dislike based on an arbitrary bias would be prejudiced. You pre judge the person.

And I agree some highly educated are racist/biased. Id argue political parties that tailor parts of their platform based on race is a racist policy. How could it not be. You are treating or offering people something different than the other based solely on race. Racism has established itself as a negative but when a group gets something from it that group considers it a positive.

ie - This race gets hiring preference solely based on their race.

Some might like that but it is wrong as it creates division from the other that does not receive such favor.

The key is to base favor on performance to earn favor rather than arbitrary characteristics.

Someone once said something about content of character not color of skin. Sadly no one listened.

Personally as an Irish person Im discriminated against in the porn industry. I dont think any Celts can reach the depths required to succeed and are eliminated because of an arbitrary characteristic.

If you are, then you're a racist. Who among us would rather think better of their own race? If you do, then you're a racist. It's only natural to want for your own. It goes beyond race too. But we won't get into that here.

Personal morality is not Religion. One does not have to be Religious to love God and be Moral. I rarely go to church but everyday thank god for what I have (I miss a day now and then).

One problem with Freedom is; you are free to be immoral. Some see morality as a limit to Liberty. In truth Libery can not survive without morality. JMHO

Dont confuse morality with cultural mores. What is ok in some cultures is tabboo in another. Liberty cannot survive with out the Golden Rule.

I agree with you that everyone has biases and prefers their own kind but unless someone else makes it that way race isnt a factor. Own kind is more about culture and common bonds.

I will say 8 years under the last guy made me think about race the way I never had before and not in a positive way. He tried to institutionalize race in a way that is harmful.

What I am against is hyphenated Americans.

You can be Norwegian or American but you cant be both.

Ill take a red, white, and blue American that happens to have lots more melanin than me over someone that proclaims proudly he is German-American and flies a German flag on his dwelling.

I have blonde hair. I have said for a long time that we 'blondes' are the most discriminated against of all. People tell blonde jokes at any type of event public or private. We are so demoralized!

I hope none of you are dumb enough to think I am serious.

Many people don't know, or won't admit that there is a big difference between racism, and bigotry. As I understand it, racism believes that one race is superior, or inferior to another one based on Genetic race (caucasian, asian, negroid, Indian, south sea islander etc), where bigots simply believe they are superior, or other People are inferior based on traits, behavior, economic status, place or residence, religion, etc.

While most racists are also bigots, not all bigots are racists. Some people simply think others are inferior to them because the other people belong to a group such as antifa. Many antifa members are bigots toward any conservatives, and many conservatives are bigots toward antifas. That doesn't make them racists though.

Top photo: man on right is a hard worker form the pac north west, hes helping out. 2 in the middle are from Alabama or Georgia probably Birmingham or Atlanta they're Faking It in hopes of going to a hospital and getting some poontang. The man on the left wasn't a racist but is now after he found out his buddies got some poo Tang after he carried them for 17 miles.

Second photo: the black man who just got a tooth knocked out for not helping is buds is being held back from beating the s*** out of the white guy for stealing his seat. The white guy is obviously tired from working.

Third photo: the three African American men are obviously stoned as s***, especially the one being carried. The man in front threatened to kill the white man if he didn't help. Later the three will somehow blame it on the white man and get promotions, while the white man is court-martialed sent back to the States and has to create a new company in the landscaping business.

I do not consider myself racist in the least but damn if you're going to sit by and not tell a joke. Even if you're the only one that thinks it's funny.

You're confusing bigotry with narcissism. Narcissists are the ones who feel superior over others. Bigots don't necessarily feel superior over others, but rather will just automatically not like someone based on differing opinions.

It's difficult or impossible to judge yourself relative to prejudice, bias, racism, honesty and all that. My mother was born in the depression and still can't see what it did to her psyche even though she and my dad worked hard and lived a very luxurious life. In the late 60's and 70's when the civil rights movement polarized more than unified, I could see her leaning towards the racist side of her normal self and I mentioned it - and she was so insulted. I don't feel like I'm racist or sexist or assholist but I know I lied at least on the third one.

Excellent point. I hadn't considered narcissism. I just get irritated at people throwing around the term racist, when the person they are trying to insult may be more properly referred to as a bigot, or narcissist. I don't consider myself a racist, but I do think I am superior to people I consider to be idiots who don't think things through. I'm just not sure if that makes me a bigot, or a narcissist. I'm not superior be cause of any genetic happenstance, I'm superior because I'm not quite as big of an idiot as the person I feel superior to..race has nothing to do with the issue.

A sort of different thought occurred to me.. at some level calling other people racist, bigot, narcissist is the similar to little kids on the playground calling another kid "fattie", "four eyes", "pizza face", etc. It is name calling in hopes of eliciting a defensive response. If the person who is called the name just shrugs it off, the impact of the epithet that is aimed at them has far less impact. It is little more than name calling.

'Racists' see reality. The races are different, although we've been programmed to not see it. Why are great swimmers of Northern European blood? Why are sprinters mostly Africans? There's plenty of examples. People are different and their blood or DNA or whatever you want to call it matters. Racism isn't good or bad, it just is.
