RIP Babs...

Barbara Bush had a strength and quiet dignity that has not been seen since she left. While watching her I always had the feeling that she could have stepped in a ran things if anything happed to her husband.

RIP Mrs Bush.

You were a classy lady, who never saw herself as too important to not stop and say thank you to the Marines on duty in the Whitehouse. Never too pretentious to be up at 3am in the morning (God knows why), baking chocolate chip cookies in the WHitehouse kitchen, and going to each of the sentries (Marines, SS, etc.) and offering a late night snack. Never too proud to laugh at yourself as you waddled out to the pool at Camp David, wearing flippers, snorkel and mask, and heard one of the MSG guards in the gym LOL at the sight. You just smiled and laughed at your reflection in the glass, waved to the Marines and jumped into the pool.

"Classy" does not begin to describe the elegance, compassion and fortitude you had.

You will be missed.

My recruiter (and later my boss as a MGySgt on recruiting) was crew chief on Marine 1 through Reagan and Bush Sr, he always had very nice comments on both of those First Ladies as well. Old school women who were both intelligent and classy, our country is long for those public examples these days.

Sirhr,

You A-hole. I though Streisand bit the dust too and was about to raise a toast (yes, at 8am) to her demise.

From what I recall, B. Bush was an excellent first last. She certainly lived to protected her family, so I wouod say she was probably and even better mother.
I thought Laura Bush did a good job as well. I didn't note either of them out really pushing their agendas hard like Hillary or Michelle.

Barbara Bush's agenda was fighting adult illiteracy. A couple days before she passed, I read this article by a man who not only graduated both high school and college, he then taught school for seventeen years while illiterate. It was then Second Lady Bush's campaign against illiteracy that gave him the push to admit he couldn't read and ask for help. I highly recommend reading his story: http://www.bbc.com/news/stories-43700153

She touched millions of other's lives in the same way, certainly a legacy to be proud of.
