A Moment of MAGA: SH Wheelchair Initiative for Vets

thanks for the great post veer, i like hearing cool stuff like this...

Rthur, great thinking, and i will make an offer, any vets out there that i can use my weldor/fabricator skills to mod your wheel chairs in any way, i will.
come see me and pay for parts, if you aint got any dough, we.ll get around it
That's a great gesture One, I was thinking along the lines of like Sirhr's donation gig to supply one on site for all to use.
The hide has raised monies before and this reason can't be beat.

Geezus that made me well up. I ain't ashamed one damn bit, but I'm not going down the corridor anytime soon. Whew, that hit's home.

We're due for a benevolent act ain't we? I'm in however you guys wanna go. (y)

This brings up a problem I had never considered.
A worthy cause would be to implement a "off road" wheelchair/s for these folks to have greater access to their loved ones.
Outstanding young man in the efforts.

I'm proud to be somewhere in the middle of all this. I certainly wasn't expecting the burst of insight and industriousness, but, this being The Hide, and we being who we are, I'm not at all surprised.

Sometimes things just happen the way they should. This is one of those times. A hero packing a hero on his back, both vets. Appropriate.

What Arlington needs is a wheelchair van and a couple of wheelchairs that can navigate the soft grass. The all t'terrain powered chairs require learning their use and wouldn't be appropriate. Maybe something similiar but something where an attendant could do the driving.

this operation could have many fronts, certanly all of them would be easily won...

put some one in charge and lets shake the dust off of this
I’m down. I’ve been to that cemetery a couple times. It is beautiful and gives me goosebumps even just thinking about it. I would love to help out monetarily anyway I could.

I'm game......it's been a few months since we've had a worthy cause.

I'm not going to nominate anyone for the gatekeeper position, one way or the other. But, if no one wants to do the duty (I'm not, I'd fuk it up 6 ways from Sunday....), there is always our O/P, or a certain bastidge from Astoria (that thinks he's from WA) that did a pretty good job on the last couple of go arounds.

And, the Rate of Return has been pretty friggin' phenominal......I'd be happy to jump back in to that pool. ;)

Wide-tired, electric "golf cart" type thing, that can possibly negotiate winter as well? Something purpose-built for the locale AND task, as well as silent, "driven by a responsible person" and something that actually works.
That isn't tied down by bureaucracy.

And a device such as this could be stored where? Ya'll'd know more than I....

I would do it, but the move has me swamped.

OK Sean you're hired. I was getting all sophisticated and you provided a problem solved alternative that answers the critical questions. Of course to be operated on a federal reserve this must be approved by OSHA, the EPA, the Corps. of Engineers, the Americans With Disabilities Act, etc., etc., etc. I'm going to E-Mail POTUS and ask him to donate a golf cart from one of his golf courses. A quick call from the WH to local VFWs or ALs would find volunteers to drive it on a daily schedule.

I was wondering what the rules would be on these sites.
It would seem this would be a "positive" addition and thus good press for all concerned.

I've not had the opportunity to get to Arlington yet, but it is on the list. As it is though, many here would know better of what is 'allowed' and what is not. At the same time, by having a designated 'attendant' for situations such as this put the responsibility on someone particular.

That way no-body goes mud-bogging in that hallowed ground, or does anything else stupid with the machine. Which (in my eyes) would only be there for the aid of individuals whom aren't able to traverse the lands anymore. It is up to your uniformed members to work out the details of what can and can't happen. Alas, one thing that nobody can stop/change is age. Everyone ages, and there's also an incredible number of handicapped individuals.

(that is my lot in life)

So while I'm totally in support of something like this, I also understand some resistance to 'we've never had to do that before'.... and how to get through that bureaucracy I don't know.

I'll do what I can though. Like I said, big/soft tires to not leave a mark, and all season capability. Tracks (rubber, of course?)

Well, you boys know I am in on this.
I like to help everyone and helping vets or families who have lost one of our heroes is way up on my list.

Hell, I have an old HS stock with PTG DBM to sell and will donate 100% of the funds to this.

I think a couple aluminum hand push jobs with big wide tires (think downhill mtn bike or fat bike size) and maybe some 10” kids bike pneumatics for the front would be best. Probably for weight, portability, and cost.

I do some work the the leading physical rehab doc from Craig Hospital through work and will ask about his knowledge of a place that fabs these. I would bet we could get a deal and I would bet we could collect some funds again.

Im gonna text the propane bandit right now about where to deposit the cash ....?

I'm being entirely self-centered. She's in nesting mode and I fear for my nuts.

Oh Jesus.....BT/DT......You have my sympathies and compassion.

If she's in that mode, your berries are already gone, you just haven't heard the swash of the blade and the drop. What's your new addy ? (for the member's T-shirt). Wear it with pride, you will have earned it.

Oh, we're doing the Dance of the New Roof now. And then it'll be redoing the rooms, etc., etc., etc. But I get a reloading room and a man cave both out of the deal, and the dog gets acres of squirrels, rabbits, and hedgehogs to lord it over. I suppose I'll deal but I need to think about tranquilizer darts just in case.

Or so you think......the dog will be fine......he's golden. Oh, I'd suggest getting a second dog....a "companion"......not sure why, but I think two "Dags" will help distract her while you build your reloading room (just the way you want it).

You ? You're toast. I'm 62.....like I said BT/DT.......go ahead....tell me I'm wrong....(better be pretty strong darts). (This, from a guy that once hid a new FN-FAL in the suspended ceiling in the basement and when coincidentally found by the wife, I was forced to say "Oh, I've had that for years". Seems to me, it cost me a Ladies Rolex Datejust.....back when both were "cheap", relatively speaking).

Message received and answered. I can play treasurer again if you boys like and we can use the account we've been using.
Someone or someones is gonna have to do some serious leg work. I can donate and run the books, other than that and spread the word, I'm up to my ass in Crocigators. Hell, I still haven't finished Tuckers project. Has anyone sought permission to run this one? I'd think that would be step 1. Great cause again. That's for sure.

Hah! I've been meaning to give you shit about that......It's just a spoon!......other than that, what the hell is so hard about about making that lure ? Is Tucker even still talking to you ?

Anyway, all bullshit aside, if you want to take on the role of REMF/WIC for this Op, I'd be honored to pony up and help however I can. ;););)

Yeah, yeah, but when you find the right one you live to see a smile on her face. And the missus seems to really like it, too.

You 'ain't a kiddin' bud....I got one too......and, she chased my dumb ass down when we first met. Over the years, sometimes painful.....nowadays ? All good. Worth everything you can do for them.

He's been very patient with my ineptness and I'm embarrassed as hell. Struggling, I'll leave it at that. I've fucked up a lot of wires/shafts. I'll be diving back into it shortly.

Yeah, right? This site and the members here sure saved my ass. I said when I got over the hump I'd help out. So count me in. I like it when we "come to the rescue" because it can and does help on a truly unimaginable scale and I learned that first hand this last winter. It's also something you rub in anti's faces when they bitch about firearms culture and how fucked up we all are. I don't see grassroots help, just a lot of grassroots bitching. It's why I value you guys and this site so much. It encompasses the heart of America through action and not more useless talk.

I saw the picture and the only thing that ran through my mind was, "he ain't heavy, he's my brother". 26 or 96, makes no difference he's one of us.

Second was given the condition of my back and my feet it may not be long before I'm needing one myself!

I have a lot of nothing but time and I could offer to manage it but I'm not sure what all needs be done. I can account, I can coordinate and I can even work with VA and American Legion but I have zero idea of how to work with or deal with Arlington. All the tomb guards I knew moved on a long time ago too. I have a PO Box and can setup a special Paypal account. 1J04 took care of me and did a great job but of course I can't volunteer him or his time, but I can say that's how funding should probably be handled.

Let me know how to help and I'll do it whatever it is.

PS, there's this "Freedom Flight" program that offers flights to vets to go visit the memorials. They may have info or be able to help or give advice on who and how to go about making this happen.

Great post Veer.

Just giving you a well intentioned hard time.....need more supplies ? I Still have a bit layin' around. Looking at the original, it looks like the secret sauce is in the blade, the rest looks pretty plain brown wrapper. Don't know where one can find a blade like that....unfortunately.

When looking at doing something like this, the first thing I ask is, "Is there a rule or regulation that says specifically, I can't do it?"

Here is the CFR for visitors at Arlington.
I can't find anything that says no to the use of motorized wheel chairs or transportation devices within the grounds.
It does touch on motorized vehicles, but not specifically what we're trying to accomplish.

5 pages of visitor rules...

I shared this story via text and that quote was the how I shared it.

Do we need to get permission from Frank to run a fundraiser? Frank, can we do this?

Remember this guys, the most success comes from when we act from a why.
The “how” always works out if the “why” is powerful.
Lots of guys looking into different avenues, we will get something dialed.

I can’t lead this charge in good faith. I have three Small children and I am in the middle of a career change, but, I will be in Arlington in about five weeks and I would be more than willing to talk to whoever we need to when I am there. I will be there an hour and a half or two hours at least. I will read through those rules on the page and see if I can get a face to face with somebody so we can get someone on the other end to move forward.

Since the turn-down of the sandbox, we have all kinds of "up-armoured meter-maids" and such. With all the returned equipment, is there something you current military folks know of that could be utilized? Something a touch smaller than a Buffalo, but at the same time a touch bigger than a "bomb disposal robot"

My point being, something that will fit the bill perfectly, cost as little as possible, be reliable-as-hell, and have the least possible footprint. Personally, I would want a situation where NOBODY can ever make the statement of "we didn't have that problem BEFORE the (such'n'such) machine came here."

It'll be carrying weight, primarily on grass, and has to work in all kinds of weather. I don't know how soft the ground is there but the LAST thing I'd want to create is ruts. Especially accidental, but the other point is the responsibility of the operator. Anyone who were to make a rut on said grounds should be dealt with by the Honor Guard.

I'm perfectly good with abusers being kewpie dolls for Honor Guard's bayonet practice. As a start.

Thoughts?

Oh yeah, and seeing as it is something (I hope) that WE are doing here, it needs to be Dignified as all hell, AND eleventy steps past Robust and Cool! Half a step to Space Shuttle. Anything worth doing, is worth doing WELL. Overkill is UnderRated.
