Maggie’s June 6, 1944

Thought I’d share some pics from my dad’s photo albums from his time in aerial photo recon squadron from WWII, in memory of an exceptionally brave bunch who got there feet wet on June 6, 1944. He designed squadron insignia and processed a lot of these pics himself. Have a large selection of the negatives for same, as well. Including a few others, one a 4 shot sequence of an unfortunate ‘bombs away’ for a B17, and another of a buzz bomb on mission.

I used to have the book "Flying Fortress" all about the B17. The pics of the B17 losing a tail fin were featured in that book.

Google often links important "things" on it's homepage/search page with a working link to either a Google search of the subject or something else interesting.

Those are cool pictures and pretty sure that one of the buzz bomb was some high priority shit at the time and that's the first picture I've ever seen looking down on one. Wouldn't wanna be on that beach in that picture either.

That picture of the bomber losing the tail due to the dropping bomb I wanna say is historic, wanna say I heard of it before on a documentary but never saw the picture. Searched on google and there were the pictures. There's a picture of the tail before it got hit with the bombs falling and of the bomber going down fast; says the entire crew was lost.

You have all those pictures, the originals and negatives? You should at least give the negatives to the Smithsonian. They can store 'em better we can. Those are pretty significant. Wanna say that's the only recorded incident or only known incident of a bomber getting hit by another's bombs.

My father was into radios and scored one of the vacuum tubes on the Enola Gay. Wanna say it had six in total. Took it to show and tell when I was 7 but the significance was lost on everyone, even the teacher. Was told he'd kill me if I broke it, amazed he let me take that.

Appreciate the comments. I have three scrap books full of pictures, each about 2” thick. I talked to a Marine Colonel about them, and he said there are so many troves of pics like these that museums can’t take them all. Have to say I pretty much lived in these books as a kid, along with some books that had line drawings of every war plane used by either side in the European theater. Was/is pretty cool pass through history.

Thanks for sharing those up, here. Always great to see REAL history. What I wouldn't give, to look at a few of those under a magnifying glass. That is one wonderment about Black n White photo's.... is that they capture SO MUCH MORE detail than what the naked eye sees.

Have you looked at any of them (especially the beachhead shots) [no pun intended] magnified?

Need to go through negatives and see what all is there, as well. Lots of these taken with high resolution cameras from that time period. Pretty sure there are more from DDay that really show landing craft and vessel activity offshore. Lots of bomber formation flying.

Definitely looking forward to it. I had opportunity many years ago, to look at a 'rooftop taken panorama' photo of a small northern town here in Manitoba. It was taken sometime in the early 20'th century. 1900-1920 iirc. Point is, when using a magnifying glass on the photo, as well as a jewelers loupe, it was INCREDIBLE the further detail that could be seen. Items for sale in the Hudson's Bay Trading Company store window, for example. To which the window was a good 300 yards away from the camera. And only a hint of 'building with a window' was seen with the naked eye. So one can only imagine that which can be seen in your photo's.

Color film, which consists of 'pixels' just doesn't have the depth of detail that b/w did, so many years ago. Unless the Super-Secret-Squirrel-Services have some other fancy thing that is better, I don't know.

Apologies for the swaying interest in this thread. I appreciate the history, and actual pictures only 'step up' anything written about the actions of that time.
