Nine Meals away from Armageddon....

Laughing cause the sky turned blue an the power is back on so, it will never happen again is the standard mind set. Seen this over an over.
Ask the people of Fla about Xmas of 1989 an prior to, "your not building that power plant in my back yard". After that simple pointed message right at Xmas, everyone changed their tune,... laughing
We knew the storm was coming, but took base load plants off line for "Routine Maintenance" laughing,...

Geno,
If that set was in fact single phase 120/240 to get 1500 amps that barrel would have to be a 550 kw barrel unless it was made special for single phase only. If the breaker is 1500amp it's single phase output, but that barrel looks to small to me, an the breaker box I see looks to small for a 1500 amp single phase breaker?

We had a twin Turbo cat V-12 for the rock crushing plant. It was 480v three phase. I don’t know how many amps it was rated. It was over kill. I would have run two plants.

Geno,
So it's 120/208 3 phase then? If so at 320KW, you should see 901 on the load bank, if banking at unity. If you have a reactive bank (which all of mine were) you should see 1127 amp's. Is it rated standby or prime? I'm guessing standby based upon the 1127 number for if it was prime you can add 10%

Yea Cat makes some nice small units like that, but were they really shine starts at 2.2Mw (3516) an up. Their utility grade stuff is up there with the top folks . They stop with the 3600 series but can stack them up like cord wood if need be, but at that point GE frame 5's an bigger are the norm in many places depending NOX laws, an local fuel supply's.

I’m busy tearing down at the moment but I know the tag is over 1100 and under 12. I’ve never really cared to be honest. We run so much less than it’s rated for that it doesn’t break a sweat.

I feel like you’re trying to find an argument where there isn’t one. I said it was tested to 1500. I was there and saw it with my own eyes. Giant toaster. Heats a shop in the dead of winter pretty quick ??

Years ago, my first rock crushing company had Detroit V-16s with quad turbos! On flat beds! Two of them per flatbed! Talk about a fuel bill!
Detroit's have always been hungry, the 71 an 92's were not that bad but the 6-110's an 20V 149's liked diesel, the EMDs though did not have near as bad of a heat rate, compared.

Not looking to argue at all, been in EPG to long. If it was a toaster it was a standard unity load bank, as a reactive is totally different an thats the only way you'll see anything close to ID plate KVA amps. I'm guessing the meters on the bank were out of cal.

What’s more alarming is that our power was once generated locally. Now it’s wired in from somewhere far away. We’re no longer self sufficient. Combine that with power plant controls being digitally/computer controlled and we’re Sitting ducks for power outages if someone really wants to mess with it.

Just like AJ says about highways crippling a city.

A potato canon dragging a wire across a three phase line will shut it down instantly.

Don’t even need to be near the power/sub station.

When it’s time to go fishing, a few good men can cripple a city.

Don’t for get long range shots at mobile generators.
BLU114 anyone?

Worked wonders in the Gulf!

On a serious note....

Has anyone given thought to having hard copy printouts of their favourite carefully researched and collected adult entertainment material?

Thanks for posting a warning W54/XM-388. I’m an electrician by profession and wouldn’t mess with that stuff for double my salary. There’s so much power going through those lines that one mistake will kill you as fast and as sure as a headshot between the eyes!

I’ve a potato gun, plenty of wire and hi-tension lines running thru the easement behind the house- That’d be quite a show! Never crossed my mind until I read what Bender said. No BLU-114 though .
From the book, "He knew where all the lines fed that cesspool, an had spotted the perfect place. Using the cover of darkness Bill arrived at the location armed with 2 shaped an two kicker charges. Cutting the two inter legs of the tower on the curve it dropped an took out not only the primary feeders, but a sewage treatment plant as well. When the lines fell across the beltway that caused a major traffic accident that blocked it for 21 hrs. This was more than enough time for the rest of the crew to complete their tasks. Now major gang factions within the city finally realized this was the most opportune time an started their revenge on LE an enemy gangs under the cover of confusion an darkness. The city slowly started to eat it's self faster than the plan called for. Bill now realizing they had the upper hand in spades,....

In 1966 and 1967, I ran a fair number of USMC AC Generator Sets ranging from 5KW Beach Illumination sets, thru Detroit Diesel 20KW, 30KW, and 60KW units, on up to skid mounted 100KW Cummins Units, in I Corps RVN at Dong Ha, Camp Carroll, and Cua Viet.

They were mighty tough pieces of equipment.
