Does this one use the Applied Ballistics custom drag curves, if the bullet isn't in the 4DOF library yet?

Can I change the firmware in my AB to 4dof?
Changing firmware is not available now. Many have asked so the question is being discussed. Remember the 4DOF is a 5700 meter so range card, Multi-target and storage of more than 3 gun profiles is not part of the 4DOF firmware. Additionally, some range finders that connect to AB units will not connect to 4DOF units.

What range finders will connect?

Will an elite version be available with range card, and multi targets?

That changes my mind not having the elite version. I had just assumed it was the elite version.

Hopefully they will offer one in the future

Kestrel Ballistics Announcement

New Firmware 1.27 & Kestrel Ballistics App Update!

In addition to the latest firmware 1.27 release, we have also made improvements to the Kestrel LiNK Ballistics app that will prompt users to perform an update.

How does it work?

LiNK Ballistics app users will get notification that an update is required to continue using the LiNK app

NOTE: Because of the added encryption and improved security features, the update connection may take a little longer than usual.

Who does this affect?

  • Customers with Kestrel 5700 & 5700 Elite with LiNK units
  • Kestrel LiNK Ballistics app users (iOs and Android)
What’s coming with the new update? [Benefits]

The new Kestrel LiNK Ballistics app will have the firmware update contained in it, so users will not need an internet connection to update firmware for 1.27. In addition to the improvements to the overall stability of the app, there are several other improvements to expect:

  • No more lost or erased Gun Profiles -- Gun Profile data will remain saved with every firmware update
  • Saved Kestrel values -- App will no longer overwrite Kestrel values upon first connection
  • Better security -- Privacy PIN issues have been fixed

*If customers do not want to update firmware at this time, please go to Google Playstore or Apple Store and unclick Automatic Updates for the Kestrel LiNK Ballistics program. Then, users can continue to use the current version of the unit firmware and LiNK Ballistics app without any changes.

I also haven't received any shipping notification yet

My order is still “processing”. I’m assuming the delay is in the app side. Apple can be a PITA during the new app approvals.

That was fast!! Its my first Kestrel. I think I am headed outside to take some readings!!! :)

Good luck Donho00! I feel I need a college course or two to get everything figured out! But had issues with VCR's also!!

It is lots to learn
I followed the setup guide.
Seem to go well i think
My questions are:
Tmoa? Or Smoa?
Does the Kestrel read actual altitude?
The phone app uses GPS to determine that
Is there a way to have it read shooting angle? The phone app can be aligned on your barrel. I didnt see it on the kestrel?
Is there a way to show a full chart of yardage/come ups? Or does it only work with 1 yardage at a time?
I am only able to send ONE gun profile from my phone to the kestrel? Is that right?
Besides axial form. Is there a way to add a Correction Factor of any kind?

First time Ketrel user. Sorry for all the questions

Anyone know if the Sig Kilo 2400 BDX will work with the Hornady Kestrel? I’m looking into getting a new range finder, and would prefer to get one that links to the kestrel.

TMOA is true MOA and is usually what your scope is, Smoa is shooters MOA and rounds down to 1 inch
Kestrel does not read altitude, it uses Station Pressure for calculations
Angle is manually entered in the target submenu, it is not read from the app, but you phone may be able to provide that info
A chart of yardage would be a Range Card and is not available in a 5700 Kestrel, only the Elite
The Hornady Kestrel can store 3 gun profiles, more can be stored in the App and transferred as needed.
Axial Form Factor is recommended for calibrating the Hornady Kestrel, however Muzzle Velocity is also user definable

The Sig will not link with the Hornady Kestrel, Here is the list of LRF that will

Is it the ballistic software that causes the issue to link to the Sig LRF, or the Sig LRF software that causes the issue? I thought I read on your site that the Sig 2400 BDX will link with the 5700 and 5700 Elite, so I just assumed it should work with the Hornady.

I believe it's the BlueTooth protocol that prevents it from linking. The sig LRF use Applied Ballistics protocol that they license. 5700 and 5700 Elite with AB uses the same protocol so they can talk. The Hornady 5700 does not have the AB protocol and i guess they were not willing to pay for the license.

Thanks, but it didn’t work... must have some corrupted data somewhere...

Where would one request that the Berger 156 EOL be added to the 4DOF bullet library?
